Zed Counter Tips

This is not a QQ thread. I genuinely want to learn about countering Zed.

I main jungle, but, as everyone who's played draft pick has experienced, getting your main every time is highly improbable. I secondarily play mid, and sometimes have a bit of a hard time with a certain champion (Hint: It's Zed). I queued up for some team builder earlier to day and picked Ahri for fun. I got matched up against Zed and, for the first time in quite a bit, fed. I got absolutely destroyed in lane. I couldn't seem to do anything. I was pushed into tower because I couldn't match the ability-spam he put out, so I had little room to dodge the shurikens. I rushed Zhonya's, but, being way behind, didn't complete it in time to make a diference.

In the past I've had trouble with him on other mages, too, and since the recent early game buffs and my lack of experience against him, seeing him as my lane opponent automatically tilts me harder than a Teemo. The two champions I've been able to win lane against Zed with are Yasuo and Kayle (and Udyr top, but I am 60k mastery on Udyr and know how to play almost every match-up on him.)

Looking at what those three have in common, it's relatively strong early trading and waveclear. Is this how to counter Zed? Is picking a mage into Zed or first picking a mage just a terrible idea in general?

TL;DR: How do those of you who play more mid lane counter Zed? What do those of you who play Zed recommend?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm sorry but you are getting outplayed if you are losing to zed as ahri. Ahri is one of the hardest "skill matchups" for zed. I have a lot of mechanical skill on zed and when I want to pick him I just ban the ahri. Biggest thing with ahri is that you know where im going to be when I ult you (directly behind you) so time your charm for when I come down then just kill me because I should be under tower at that point unless you are really bad and were pushed up against me. Another thing is that your kit has 3 dashes so you can just charm and dash away because zed has his ult and w so he has 2 gap closers to your 3.

CC, he's quite fragile so stun him and go to town!

well i don't face zed often, being a zed main, but I can offer some advice. If you have the opportunity, and are decent with her, Annie is the counter to just about every ad assassin out there. so if you can use her, that's pretty simple. on the offchance you first pick a different mage and wind up seeing zed, rushing zhonyas is definitely the thing to do, good job there. but besides that, you should make sure to focus on your cs and avoiding his poke. you'll scale better into the late game. if he uses his shadow to harass, he's quite vulnerable to ganks. so if he's abusing you in lane and uses his shadow freely, have your jungler come up for a nice kill. in teamfights, stick with someone that has good cc. but chances are if you built zhonyas, he'll go for your adc, at which point feel free to nuke him. basically, just try to play safe, unless you feel comfortable trading with zed. he hits a major powerspike at 6, so don't hang around on low health. when i play with zed, i focus on poking them down pre-6, then going for a quick kill at 6. his all in potential is great, and if you waste your cc in trading, you're pretty much dead.

Ahri is fairly doable into Zed.

Focus on farming and keeping the lane pushed out, you're both assassins but Ahri is a far better team fighter than Zed, so show up to Dragon/Buff skirmishes, remember to build a Zhonya's early

2x Dorans Rings into Armguard, if your having trouble still finish the Zhonya's otherwise work on a Deathcap (Or Ludens - better for snowballing)

if he ults you run sideways not backwards. Generally zeds line up all their skills linear so going left or right instead of racing for your tower might be a better solution. Dont let him hit all of his abilities or you will be additionally chunked.

Personally i hate zed and want him to be guttered trash because thats where he belongs.

As someone thats plays mid and adc. The counter to picking zed is picking zed. GGWP. Everytime i see a zed on the enemy team when im the adc, i already know that as long i dont lose lane the game is going to be free, Zed sucks big ass dick

Ahri used to be an even matchup into Zed back in season 4. However, after receiving 6 total nerfs this season, not just Zed, but most of her matchups in general have become far less favorable and she has a lot less room to outplay her opponents.

Ive found that Vladimir almost completely negates Zed after around level 4. learn Vlad and you will find out why lol

Bring exhaust and cast it right when he ults then run away, you should take as little as 200-300 dmg.

Anyone with build-in hard CC should have an easy game (Annie/Liss/Malz/etc), or someone with invulnerability to negate his R (Vlad/Kayle/Zhonya rush).

Alternatively, you can pick a tank (Darius/Irelia/Shen).

His shuriken spell dmg is heavily reduced going through a minion. Level 1 he does no sticking dmg with it if thrown through your minions. When he tries to AA a minion to last hit use your auto attacks and your dmg ability and punish him. Zed should be afraid to last hit in melee and should have to cs with his Q, giving you even more room to zone him. Your lane will probably push which means more pressure 1v1 temporarily. So long as you make and keep an early advantage your Zed opponent should be trained to farm with his abilities ; p

It's not so simple once he gets to level 4 tho

I like to play Diana mid (and veigar/ahri to a lesser extent), and I try to rush zhonyas against Zed. When is the BEST time to use the active against his ult?

For me I just play Syndra. Yes I know, shes a squishy immobile mage, but comeon. Once he ults in. Q/E to knock him back and not let him get in the extra damage for the mark and stun him and then press R. If all else fails, just use W and throw it at his shadow. He has to come back to it sometime.

Recently I've been play a ton of zed. A lot of people think to burst him down, or just poke until you get a gank and all in. No! If you can, pick a champion with hard cc. Ahri, T.F, Yasuo (his knockup), etc. Try to dodge his q, and once he's used his w to e q combo you, if you still have enough health you can all in him since he has no escape. Try to get your jungler to gank when it's down. He literally has nothing he can do against you once his w his down, after he's used his q and e he's pretty much done for, why is why he's an assassin. He's made to kill people quickly and get out. Many zed mains like to poke with their w, but personally i like to play aggressive in lane without my w and push to their tower and roam. I never use my w, only as an escape from a jungle gank or from a losing duel. Also, for everyone saying to build tanks, that won't help as zed can get tons of armor pen.

Zed is made to counter squishy little mages, and thrives on solo assassination. Use someone who's good against AD Assassins. Also, force him to use his W as an escape, if possible. Ask for jungler help when necessary.

item 3157 : Use the Active when he goes in on you or right before the death mark activates, allow him to think he's killed you when all he's done is let you get off and waste his ult for nothing.

item 3140 => item 3139 : Active removes his mark, effectively nulls his burst and allows for a more even trade in raw damage.

item 3026 => He's now burst you down, wasted all his CD's and now you get to come back to life and effectively given you a second chance. The bonus Armor and Magic Resist aren't bad either.

summoner 21 => This Summoner Spell will save you countless times in the early game. Most Zeds will all in you once they hit level 6 as their damage just spikes, use this to counter the majority of their damage. Note: Use this BEFORE they start hitting you and After they mark you, this way you can limit the damage received drastically upon his mark's detonation.

^These are only good really for the AD Caster Zed build path. ^

Below is how to counter his AD Basic Attack build path, something that hasn't been used in a LONG time:

item 3075 => The best item you can get as it effectively screams "Stop hitting yourself!" to Zed as he chunks his own life away while you're getting 100 armor.

item 3047 => Bonus armor plus taking 90% damage from basic attacks is pretty nice

item 3110 => Lowers attack speed and provides a good amount of armor

item 3123 => Basic Attack Style Zed relies on item 3072 item 3153 item 3142 item 3812

summoner 14 => Effectively the same reason as item 3123

summoner 3 => This can also be used to reduce his output as well as get away from his sustained damage
