Assassins were popular until the Assassin rework but its mages fault?

No, it's CC chaining tanks that drove them out. When you have late game marksmen pretty much 2-3 shotting every squishy, 2 seconds of CC is enough to kill literally any assassin

I want to put a little disclaimer, I'm not saying I think tanks should be nerfed. I think they are finally in a place where they aren't too weak or broken. However, the damage that gets done to targets because they CC somebody needs to come down as a whole. There's a negative stigma when it comes to tanks that THEY are the reason the game sucks, even when they are only doing what they were designed to do, and I'm sick of it.

This. Not just their CC either. They still do pretty respectable amounts of damage. Why pick an assassin when you can just grab 3 tanks that can do the same thing (dive an ADC and kill it / lock it down) while having far more utility and survivability?

Look at Galio, for example. The perfect example of CC creep. What's worse is that a lot of these champs have knock-ups which isn't reducible by tenacity. There's nothing you can do but sit in them.

The thing is that as long as tanks are the only ones who can survive the incoming damage without being instantly blown up, they will always be necessary

This makes them seem overpowered, when in reality they are just the only ones who will not die to a fart in this game

I don't think that this is realized enough. Players don't realize that the only time tanks are popular and the only time we have a "tank meta" is when assassins are super strong.

Its a huge reason why we have the issues we do.

Players called tanks op because they didn't die in a burst, and could kill them if they over committed to killing the tank... However, once you play an immobile tank you realize that the enemy could have just not wasted his resources on you, or even just left the fight after he hit you. Its pretty demoralizing.

Divewing1 votes

That's not what he's saying.

What he's saying is damage across the board means that to be viable you either have to be able to survive >2 seconds of damage, i.e be a tank.

That then makes them look OP by comparison.

Assassins have nothing to do with it

GigglesO3 votes

Except that right now everyone is an assassin, and tanks are the only things that survive assassins... so yes yes it does have to deal with assassins.

Divewing2 votes

Straw clutching much?

So we aren’t talking about adc burst per second? We weren’t talking about mages and tanks and everything doing too much damage?

Actually it's when ADCs are strong that Tanks becomes more abundant. When Assassins are strong, you see a increase in pickrate of Enchanters.

LordGeovanni2 votes

Because 1 characters resources that can get out afterward vs 3 characters resources that have to commit and cant actually do that if any kind of front line is present.

AyoLiko4201 votes

Right i cant engage an adc as an assassin because the tank gets in the way right after take 30 percent my health then 2/3 shots frm adc and boom im dead.. sick af

LordGeovanni1 votes

The part about that is the adc taking 2/3 shots to kill you which only takes 1.2 seconds. Adversly when riot makes it so that tanks are supposed to peel for adcs they need to remove the mobility from most adcs cut the cc from most adcs to negligable levels or cut the damage of those adcs that do have them even lower than the nerf all adcs need now.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Galio isn't a good example. He's not even a tank anymore. He builds straight AP 90% of the time outside of VERY rare games or when Mikyx trolls and picks him support. It's almost entirely RoA into more AP whether it be Zhonya's/Shureliya's or a lost chapter item. The only thing that makes Galio remotely tanky now is Aftershock at which point we might as well be calling anyone who takes Aftershock a tank. Galio plays more like a combo mage that has CC than an actual tank. Galio is hardly EVER going to actually frontline for you since he is destroyed by poke and would rather just sit back and ult whoever the enemy team engages on.

I think both tanks and supports need a serious rebalance. Support itemization, particularly Locket of the Iron Solari, Knight's Vow, and Redemption, increase the effective health of a champion by around a thousand or more. And that can affect multiple champions. But those are items, and can be adjusted fairly easily.

Champions, though...I remember when Leona was an almost overbearing CC machine. But what does she have? Low cooldown melee range single target 1 second stun, .5 second AoE root, and a very small AoE 1.5 second stun / 80% slow. All of that is reducible by Tenacity.

Braum has a strong slow, an AoE knockup, and an AoE slow field on top of blocking projectiles.

Galio has two knockups and a taunt.

Alistar has a knockup, a displacement, and a single target stun.

Zac has two knockups and a displacement.

Sejuani has a knockup, a stun, and a massive AoE slow.

Ornn has Brittle, three knockups, a massive slow on his ultimate, and a spammable slow on his Q.

Maokai has a point and click root, a spammable slow and knockup, and an AoE snare.

Ivern has Daisy's spammable knockup, a massive slow, and a root.

Rakan has a knockup and a charm which are extremely difficult to play around.

Poppy has a single target stun / displacement, a knockup / large displacement, and a knockdown.

And I could go on. So many of those are not affected by Tenacity. So many of those are extremely hard to avoid. So many of those are /Area of Effect/ abilities or can otherwise affect an entire team. Sometimes even buying QSS or taking Cleanse seems like a waste of time because you'll often be CC'd immediately after dispelling one.

I remember when Crescendo was a teamfight defining ability. Now there're champion with multiple basic abilities far stronger than Sona's R. With Legend Tenacity, Sterak's Gage, and Mercury Treads it's often barely even worth casting.

The CC arms race really needs to end. The minigames need to stop.

Things like Braum's passive or Ornn's Brittle auto are easy enough to play around on their own...but if you are unlucky enough to play against both on the same team? You literally can't move for ten seconds.

All that 'counterplay' goes out the window when failing to dodge once means you fail every single other opportunity for counterplay.

LordGeovanni2 votes

Thing is Tanks get 1 second knock ups roots etc in most cases while other classes with more damage that contribute to cc chain get more than 1 second knock ups roots etc and still get escape abilities while sitting at long range. Tanks are hardly tanky Penetration is every where they have no healing after fights except at the end of a 40 minute game if they decide to opt into an item. I do agree that tanks have too much knock ups but thats because riot has no one else to put cc on who will accept cut damage cause they have tons of cc. CC is originally a mage job tanks only draw agro from Pve games in Pvp games tanks deal damage and have Damage reduction Some have CC but that isnt their defining attribute But it is in this game. But then Ranged champion players will complain about the No skill tanks when tanks have to Risk getting in close range to do anything.

My Waifu Vanilla4 votes

Tanks either need CC or massive amounts of utility or they will just get ignored in every fight. Nunu is an example of a VERY bad tank right now because he doesn't bring anything to the team besides objective control. Nunu isn't going to stop and save his carry from getting dove on he has 2 instances of soft CC with one being single target with a fairly slow travel speed. Nunu doesn't have a defensive steroid so he is actually still PRETTY squishy even when built full tank making his only defensive steroid Guardian if he has someone else to split the damage with. The only way Nunu is remotely viable right now is with his objective control and most games you counterjungle or hard camp a solo lane to get them ahead making the game a 4v4 late game but you at least can secure baron at 20 minutes if you have a lead and since you aren't punished for going Banner early you just win off that push. If you don't do any of that though then you are actually useless and even if you stand in front of your team acting all menacing you by yourself am not going to stop me as Camille/Irelia/whatever from just running down the ADC behind you since I can actually just walk past you since you can't hard CC me. The support might make that a bit HARDER, but a support and an actual tank like Cho, Sej, Zac, Sion, whatever would make it IMPOSSIBLE.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Nunu will make an adc with crit and lifesteal more effective and they can give up going 2 attack speed items and go the 2 ad crit items and they still gain more from blood boil. But sheeple don't try to make the best out of situations the just follow the meta instead of making it. and anyone that wants to get to the adc has to pass nunu. to get to the adc. there is also that nunu works better with another tank who does the peel while he both buffs his attack speed damage dealers like the adc jax and yi and saps the enemy of attack speed and can still do that control think you are talking about.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

I mean at that point why not just play Ivern who gives the ADC half the amount of AS (Ardent gives 24% instead of 50% at level 13 which is when bloodboil should be maxed). Ivern also works best with another tank and actually provides better utility overall. He gives an actual shield to peel with and an overall stronger slow with 2 forms of actual hard CC in his Q and his ultimate. The only thing Nunu actually brings to a team is objective control which outside of very early dragons doesn't matter since objectives die relatively quickly when your lanes are winning which Ivern CAN do whereas Nunu can really only camp a solo lane since his 3v2 ganks are VERY mediocre bot lane since he offers no hard CC meaning he needs Jhin to be his ADC or for leona/braum and such to be his support.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Because half is not all and nunu can also use ardent censer with Summon arey and you wont have to rely on the second buggiest and actual slowest ai in the game to cc anyone.

Doozku4 votes

Braum has a strong slow, an AoE knockup, and an AoE slow field on top of blocking projectiles.

Don't forget the stun on his passive.

I remember when Crescendo was a teamfight defining ability. Now there're champion with multiple basic abilities far stronger than Sona's R. With Legend Tenacity, Sterak's Gage, and Mercury Treads it's often barely even worth casting.

I still feel like Crescendo is a strong ability. If you land it on multiple people in a teamfight then the fight is won if you can back it up with damage and more CC, although it is probably weaker than it used to be.

This is actually a really good point. Riot talks a lot about making things "unreliable" but in the context of a teamfight or skirmish all it takes is one CC, especially a reliable CC like Ryze's root or Malz's ult and all that goes out the window.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Crescendo is still Sona's best ability and the reason it allows her to "hypercarry" as a support. They shifted the power off the ult itself and onto its passive. Unless Sona positions like a beginner AI bot if she EVER reaches level 16 it is almost impossible for her team to ever lose a teamfight unless she straight up gets 1 shot which isn't exactly EASY to do when she can selfpeel with ult (about all its good for outside of spooky flash engages against people not ready for it) and shield/heal herself VERY frequently due to the massive amount of CDR she has.

AyoLiko4201 votes

Simple and I couldnt have said it better.. How come one stun or knoqk up or anything means instant death.. for an assassin.. because once we cant dodge one.. theres 2 more comin its like stun, fear, root, pull, grab, knoqkup, slow, taunt, another root, AOE Dmg. AoE effect, wall stun, misplace, knoqkup stun.. for champions that need to hit u.. its hard to get access after a certain level because tanks arent just in the way.. they lock ur plays in place

GigglesO1 votes

Thats why we need soak tanks to make a comeback, have actual tradeoffs between cc, damage, and tank.

They are also nowhere near as threatening as the ADC. If you kill the enemy ADC before the tanks, They can't do shit by themselves to win that fight. MAYBE cho cheeses one person with his ult. After that, he'll just die unless you fed him, just like every other tank. Tanks are tanky for a reason: To punish people who focus them first.

assassin are less popular only and only because their targets are too hard to kill

ADCs are literally ranged assassins that can kill you in about 1 sec with a undodgable point click, assassins gets chain CCd by enemy tank+support and on top of that supports can literally give a second HP bar to their ADC,that makes assassins literally useless unless they are so ahead

at this point why should i pick an assassin only for getting cockblocked by everyone when i can pick a mage, play a farm simulator mid and give ultility/CC so my ADC can carry me?

so,maybe finally nerf this class so they can be useful?

nha, better keep nerfing mages so they are an auto lost mid, assassins will snowball and will be able to match with enemy botlane, while mages will still give their ultility and CC (because let's be honest, their damage can't be even compared with an ADC BPS) and be better than assassins in teamfight

wildfox992 votes

because it's what an assassin is supposed to do,they don't do anything else

if you are an isolated target out of positioning or you are overextending you MUST die for them, there shouldn't be a big room for "counterplay" in that case, the counterplay is either being a nice 1vs1 champion like a bruiser (with some defensive item),or grouping with your team,in THAT case they shouldn't be able to kill you so easily, and honestly i've never seen one of them jumping on 5 guys, oneshooting someone and running away unless they were fed like a pig or they had a perfect timing on their engage, except for rengar, but he's rengar not "all assassins" and "hybrid assassins" (Ahri Zoe...)

it's this mentality that ruined this class and gave all this power to ADCs,idk about you but i see many people playing squishy champions like ADCs or control mages trying to 1 vs 1 an assassin and complaining for getting deleted (ie. a vayne that Q in on a zed for autoattacking him gets oneshooted and then call him broken),as a mid main (i play and main both mages and assasins) i can tell that really a lot of people do that (even in elo like high plat) and it ends up that assassins must be nerfed because they have no counterplay and kill you too fast while you only had to give them the respect they deserve

not to mention assassins actually have windows where they can kill you and windows when they are vulnerable, sure if rengar ult and engage you you are going to die,but if you see him let's say farming top and you engage him,all he can do is flashing away and ulting for escaping (supposing he's not fed),ADCs have always their AA up (AAs have no CD) and you can't play aroud it (the only "counterplay" is being out of their AA range),supports as well only have to pint click with instant abilities for peeling their ADC and you can't play around that

with that i mean some assassins don't have all this counterplay (Fizz ),but as long as their targets have literally 0 counterplay if not being more fed than them you can't expect anything else

Squishie1 votes

I don't know about you, but my experience in soloq is getting one shotted by these champions regardless of who is with me, there is no stopping that first auto burst that leaves u with 20 hp sometimes nothing. also what is the "window" when khazix is vulnerable ?

wildfox991 votes

W in CD and he's a free kill for any ranged

R in CD and he's a free kill for any melee

anyway if they are fed ofc that will happen, and also

some assassins don't have all this counterplay, but as long as their targets have literally 0 counterplay if not being more fed than them you can't expect anything else

as i said, some of them NEED to have a low counterplay or else they would be unplayable,if kha doesn't start to kill everyone and snowball he's useless because he can't match with the support peel and ADC point click,so he have to oneshoot everyone in early game, and as long as bot lane is that oppressive this won't change

LordGeovanni1 votes

But for some reason this post is centered around adcs having peel and shielding (aka being in a team) being the problem and not that adcs kill you too fast through that peel and shielding. In my opinion assassins are the only guys who should be 1 shotting anyone but not really from 100% hp to 0 even on squishies maybe 80% to 0 with a super large cooldown window while mage burst should be a 60%-0 with a larger cooldown window than they have currently. THe assassin reworks werent bad adcs and mages just did the same thing for alot more damage from alot safer range and more consistency versus tanks

wildfox991 votes

But for some reason this post is centered around adcs having peel and shielding

in the first one i told why (in my opinion) assassins aren't doing well, then as answer to his post where he mentioned some assassins that can just point click and instakill you i explained why some of them can't have a big room for being outplayed :

simply because their main targets can't be outplayed as well, you just have to kill them before they kill you

ADC dealing too much damage is another thing that doesn't have much to do with assassins having a low counterplay,so i just didn't mention it

In my opinion assassins are the only guys who should be 1 shotting anyone but not really from 100% hp to 0 even on squishies maybe 80% to 0 with a super large cooldown window

that would make them too team reliant since they don't have poke abilities,so basically they have to wait until someone poke them and the all in,that would be boring af and would make assassins useless

if a class supposed to pick people alone or in small groups around the map can't solo kill you why should they still exist?

that would only make ADCs even more obnoxious since they would be the only class able to kill someone full HP (well, except for fighters but you can do something against them)

assassins need to have more counterplay in their all-ins,but before that ADC and peel supports need to be reworked/nerfed

mage burst should be a 60%-0 with a larger cooldown window than they have currently.

let's just rename them supports at this point, they are supposed to burst and do damage,so no

but i do agree there is too much CDR on the board so these class have basically no CDs,but this is also for matching the 0 CD of ADCs AA

LordGeovanni1 votes

I dont believe in this desscription of assassins. and what i said doesnt make them unable to solo kill people it just means that their burst cant do all the work instantly and would have to put in a few autos after.

wildfox991 votes

I dont believe in this desscription of assassins.

an assassin (if played correctly) should be able to dive in,killing a target and going out he's squishy but have tools that allow him to survive,if he does a mistake or enemy team react and is able to block him he will die

that's the definition of assassin that riot gave us

also

and would have to put in a few autos after

you know not every assassin is AD right?

LordGeovanni1 votes

Assassins should be able to dive in and kill a target if they play right and the target doesnt have a dedicated bodyguard who react you should then need to target the body guard or not go in. I dont think assassins should get out that is the broken part. They already have high damage low cooldown spells THE best mobility spells in the game can use it quickly without delays and they go in insta some one why should they then be able to walk out they should have to wait until most of the enemy team is busy so that they can get on their target and assuming they get that target they then have the advantage because its 5v4.

LordGeovanni1 votes

let's just rename them supports at this point, they are supposed to burst and do damage,so no

Mages originally have the job that tanks are being put into. CC these are control mages and they have much less damage Burst mages Have the job of doing _ CHUNKS_ of damage. They arent supposed to insta kill anyone and sustain is supposed to counter them. These 'artillery mages' are a sub set of burst mages. And no this doesnt make them supports as the general lowering of damage in the game needs to happen (supports are not supposed to be locked out of damage either but they also shouldnt be like lux with no cooldown top of the line burst) Adcs and mages jobs are not comparable. Adcs are not supposed to be doing constant large quantaties of peoples health they should be doing steady but low damage over extended fights. Mages are not supposed to have low cooldown spells they are supposed to have windows of burst with long periods of downtime.

sustain is supposed to counter artillery mages (the ones that poke you),so after their poke you can heal back the damage, but you shouldn't be able to sustain trought a burst mage rotation unless you have a kit made for doing it (Aatrox),atm you can do it because the damage (and so the lifesteal) is out of control

burst mage have to burst people not tickle them, their damage should be unreliable because of windows of downtime and skillshoot abilities, but they should be albe to kill someone with a perfect combo

mages should be albe to kill a squishy with a full rotation (hitting everything or almost) but having windows with a downtime so if you dodge them they die

if they can't kill a DPS champion with a full rotation there is no point for picking them because if they can't burst them down with the first rotation DPS will always win

i know actually they have no CDs,but it's because they added CDR basically everywhere, same goes for assassins and any other class,it's not only a mages issue

While I think the OP could probably develop on this, I think this gets towards some of my reservations on the mage mana changes. In pro play, the reason assassins aren't present isn't because mages out-clear them (mages are supposed to have better waveclear than assassins), but because assassins can't assassinate a carry protected by a coordinated team. We have seen countless examples of tanks and supports (and often tank supports) combining their CC and utility to make marksmen nigh-unkillable in pro play, saving them from the burst of both assassins and mages, burst that has been altogether reduced and delayed over the years. It should therefore be obvious that assassins are going to suffer in an environment where their prime targets are far too difficult to assassinate, particularly after a failed class rework that focused way too hard on giving assassins awkward downtimes mid-fight. In this respect, even if mages did receive targeted nerfs to their waveclear (as opposed to general nerfs to their entire mana usage), and so to address an issue exclusively affecting a fraction of a fraction of a percentage of the entire League playerbase, those nerfs would still be unlikely to actually solve anything. Until burst champions get to properly burst down priority targets in pro play, the class with waveclear and CC on the side will always be more desirable than the class designed purely to apply burst.

Maybe... this game just isn't optimized for this level of play, then? Especially the assassin/adc/support dynamic. The only way that's ever satisfying is if all 3 get a chance to outthink their enemy, but high-level players would rather find regressively consistent strategies because not having to deal with your enemy's agency makes everything 10x simpler. And the game is too mechanically complex to for riot to force real gameplay, so we get a meta defined by people who'd rather win the game than actually play it. So either assassins can always oneshot adcs or they can't, and any middle ground will be ruined by some other consistent meta.

Śhunpo7 votes

Hahahaha, who's going to play an assassin when your targets get stacked shields on them, multiple tanks peeling for them as well as a support and if it's the ADC they 1-3 shot you....

I'll answer that question, no one.

It doesn't help that Riot just loves nerfing assassins into the ground. They let Janna run rampant for 8 years but noooooo assassins are the issue apparently.

You should play around peel in the first place as an assassin thats why they all have easy engages. You should wait out shield being used on any other target. But Because of adc power there is no reason to shield any other target adcs 3 shotting anyone is the real problem and those other problems are only problems because adcs 3 shot you and if it wasnt adc's 3 shotting you in just over 1 second it would be mages 1 shotting you in just under 1 second
