Who counters Sion?

Chromatic Eagle··3 votes·7,570 views

Hi, I'm a growing Sion main. I love the guy, and feel somewhat competent on him, but there are times where I'm first 2-3 pick and end up getting countered. Who are his absolute worst matchups so I can ban them, while also giving me tips on how to lane against them.

In my experience playing against Sion this is who I tend to pick:

Gnar Illaoi Teemo Skarner

Nasus does ok mainly cuz Sion doesn't burst so it's fairly easy to farm up and maintain health. I don't even try to kill him tho as Nasus.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

How does Teemo beat Sion? I've won almost every lane against him. At least as soon as I get item 3211

Fortunately I've never had the chance to lane against Gnar or Illaoi.

Funkin Dunkin1 votes

A good teemo will beat him. And a smart one will get hextech first and outheal any poke Sion tries to do. Teemo will get enough damage to make that item not enough early.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Yup I just fought a good one and it was hell.

Funkin Dunkin2 votes

LOL yea. Don't let the little rat fool ya. Always best to set up jungle ganks vs Teemo

Funkin Dunkin3 votes

Oh, as far as tips.

Gnar just poke him. You won't beat him all-in as he will outrun and out maneuver you. Illaoi stay away from her passives and go in if she misses and E. Teemo avoid fighting while blinded and poke until he's low enough to go in. Skarner truthfully if he's competent you wont beat him. He has too much speed to avoid your skills and enough CC to make you wish you didn't lane. He'll get behind you in a fight to prevent you from running away with ult. Avoid and farm.

Spoofghoul2 votes

early game you can stomp Nasus later he stomps you

andIllaoi is difficult but doable more a skill matchup which favors illaoi

Teemo is easy af

Juggernauts, Jayce, Kled, most skirmishers, and heavy AA melee champions.

Oh, and marksmen as a rule because he's a tank.

Thresh also makes his life a living hell.

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

Interestingly, I've heard of a funny interaction between Thresh and Sion.

If Thresh throws a hook at an ulting Sion, he'll end up dragging Thresh along for the duration of his Q.

Haven't tested to confirm though, it's just what I heard.

Ralanr1 votes

That's one reason. The rest is that all of his CC abilities make it near impossible to get a Q off in a fight or to make use of your passive.

Is Leona a counter? If you don't mind me asking.

She can interrupt him a bit. But not nearly as often.

I see, thanks.

Darius: Probably the counter one you will see the most. Will win extended fights. Doge the Q if you can (he's maxing it). Don't use Q in range of his nab, he will cancel it (unless you want to force him to burn the cooldown when he already used his other abilities). Just farm what you can, poke if you have the mana. You will probably be a bigger asset to teamfights assuming he did not get too fed. Early boots and armor.

Yasuo: Ug. Stand behind your wave if he wants to E in them (they will help him more than you). You can use you Q on the wave as he will have no mobility outside of it beside Sion himself. It will be very difficult to kill him alone once he gets item 3046. Early armor.

Riven: A good River will win trades. Her 3rd Q and W can cancel your Q and she has multiple dashes to get out of it (I'd really recommend maxing E if you were not planning to already). You can attempt a trade if she already used her Q. Farm close to tower or you can sometimes find safety in a large minion wave. Early armor.

Illaoi: No surprise, Illaoi counters another top laner. You have to move when you fighter her but you can't move when you Q, hmm. Doge her Q, know she will want to Q both you and your spirit if she pulls it. Just do your best lol. Early armor, potions, and maybe boots.

Fiora: Kind of a weird one because you can probably win most trades early with her, but she should be able to kill you with enough time mid-late game. Push the lane a bit early, she does not have the aoe to kill minions and will be force to use abilities on them or fight you in a big wave. Most Fioras will riposte as soon as your Q is ready to stun, your Q lasts longer so keep charging your Q even longer. Early armor is handy, item 3512 can help you fight her split push.

Honorable Mentions: Vayne: I think you know why. Try not to let her auto you if you can't land a stun on her in return. You can kite back a bit and use your abilities to stall her until you team is ready to help out. item 3110 item 3075

Lucian: Like Vayne but trades damage for mobility. You can probably fight if you catch him after a wasted dash.

Thresh: He can't hurt you but there is a lot he can do to peel you off. Also, don't ult over his lantern, it will send you flying in a direction you did not want to go (Riot pls). Last, if he hooks you while you are ulting you both can go on a magical journey together :D

Garen: He can stop your Q with his then will proceed to chop you up and drop a sword on you. He's pretty easy to kite, just be aware that he can unslow himself with his Q. If he uses it on a minion you can and probably should combo him.

Have fun!

Juggernauts and Jayce are pretty painful, but it mostly comes down to who is smart enough not to get hit by sions abilities.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Or in my case, stand still as I miss everything.

Cosmic Hamster1 votes

I ruin any Sion I play against with Wukong. On Panth, Quinn, Trundle and Fiora I win as well typically.

Against Wukong and Panth start cloth armor and 4 pots, easy as fuck to outscale them if they can't abuse you early, which theyc an't with that start. The others are hard, just try to farm up and be useful later on.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Oddly enough I feel like I can handle Quinn. At least bronze ones.

Dominick Destine1 votes

Vayne ?

Friendly Ram1 votes

fiora since vitals ignore your armor and trundle late game due to him just using you like a battery.

Elkington VI1 votes

Fiora Vayne

Sion can deal with mostly anyone else, when played well, but these two will always screw you unless played by a complete potato.

Gangplank can mess you up as well, but good GP's are rare, at least at my elo. He's not that bad early, but if you don't put him out of the game (which can be difficult) he will come back and destroy you.

Hammermancer1 votes

To be honest, sion has a low floor and a high ceiling, but can be outplayed by most champions if the dude behind the screen know's sion well enough.

Basically it's because sion is a raid boss in how is ability mechanics work.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Ok so far I've been seeing Fiora and Vayne as my main counters, but I've been having trouble with Darius as well. I can try not to die against him, but then he just farms. I got beat badly by a Tahm Kench and Riven once.

Statistically, Gnar and Teemo are two of his best match-ups.

Counters, according to the stats, would be things like Talon, Vlad, Kled, Darius, Fiora and the like.

Why do you never build a single offenssive item on sion in any of your games....?

Titanic hydra alone goes hand in hand with his kit...

infinite stacking HP? yup titanic grants more damage based on hp? yup

So.... why do you never buy it?

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

I generally play as a full tank but the real reason is that i just go with the recommended setup. I sometimes go with item 3025

full tank is great, but titanic is something you should get on sioon EVERY time you play him

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

I normally get the cape or go ZZ'rot to help push.

Anags2 votes

No, no one buys it because he never auto attacks enough to use it. It would be usefull in his passive if people couldn't just walk away from him.

He also doesn't need anymore waveclear

Cdr and resistances are more valuable. Frozen heart is more beneficial really.

It's not a good item on sion. Hence why pretty much no one buys it.

Raven Redeemed1 votes

I hardly ever get titanic for three reasons: it's really expensive, you don't auto very often with Sion, and the build path kind of sucks. Still, now that zz'rot got nerfed and one ocean drake combined with item 3065 can make up for item 3083 regen, I should look into getting it more often.

item 3109 is one of my new favorite items to get. It's pretty great if you have a fed carry that you'd like to heal from protect

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

So do people still buy warmogs? I do, but it's never in the recommended page.

Raven Redeemed2 votes

I can't really speak for everyone else since I'm usually the one playing Sion so I don't get to see what other people buy. I think it's a pretty good item to build after your core items because resistances have diminishing returns so buying more items with resists will not be very effective if you already have a lot; however, health does not have diminishing returns. Also, the cdr is nice. However it's not necessarily the best if you don't need the regen and/or if the other team does %hp damage.

My favorite non-core items to get are item 3083, item 3075, item 3512, item 3109, item 2045, and item 3800. I could see item 3022, item 3748, and item 3068 (no cdr or mana and Sion only sometimes is in melee range is why I don't get this) being decent items as well.

Spoofghoul1 votes

oh i like titanic on him and sunfire as well

lets me farm tons of hp

i like the burst from titanic active too i mean like a reset which can deal like a 1000 damage come lategame thats brutal if you can hit someone with R+W E Q Titanic guaranteed oneshots on anything remotely squishy

Raven Redeemed1 votes

Yeah I was playing around with titanic today and it's pretty great. The component items just seem pretty bad to me. Tiamat is fine but a little extra hp doesn't do much mid-late game when I'd be building it. Do you get sunfire instead of freezy fist/freezy heart? I usually get one of those two items and a spirit visage for my core items.

Spoofghoul1 votes

i almost never get frozen hearth or gauntlet anymore

i always liked those items on sion but after their nerfs and the prevalence of armorpen i ditched them :P you don't really need mana items on sion provided you get the meditate mastery and then you can always get cdr from other items or runes

i tend to stick with hp items these days with the odd thornmail

i ususally just go for tank + regen/ damage items so things like item 3047 item 3068 item 3075 item 3748 item 3083 item 3065

would be a normal build for me

remaining cdr comes from runes

you still end up very tanky but you also pour out damage like crazy if you are ignored

Raven Redeemed1 votes

Interesting. I like it. I'll try out the sunfire build sometime. Personally I have been sticking with the frozen items because I like to get the early cdr for my ult. I tend to gank a lot so the early cdr is nice. I'll pick up one of spirit visage's component items if I need hp early.

Spoofghoul1 votes

Ahri ahri is definitely annoying

Fiora Vayne because % true damage is balanced

Yasuo is difficult until you get item 3068

oh and fuck Pantheon for real hes asiuldghlKGH;AWOP

everyone else you can stomp in lane if you know the match up this includes fiora btw but she outscales you by jerking off so there is that

MXXXXXL1 votes

{quoted}

Yasuo is difficult until you get item 3068

Why get item 3068 instead of item 3143 against Yasuo ? item 3143 has 10% crit reduction.

Spoofghoul2 votes

because item 3068 gets rid of his shield the moment he gets close

and it deals more damage so you can duel him

you can get the item 3143 after

MXXXXXL1 votes

Ah, good idea.

How about this, you get item 3751 , then build into item 3143 ?

Spoofghoul1 votes

i would only do that if i fall behind or have enough damage already

because it lets me grab item 3751 + item 3082 followed by item 1011 after and get more hp in the same time it would take to complete either item
