Maokai's CC is way too spammable

Whenever I'm playing a melee champ against him, whether it's a tank, bruiser, or whatever, if he decides to peel me that's it, I'm not playing the game for that teamfight. I'm just going to be locked down barely able to move or use abilities because Maokai felt like it.

This isn't healthy gameplay. There is no counterplay. You just get locked down by spammed slows, root, and knockback. Even though technically you can use skills while slowed and rooted, it doesn't matter since Maokai is a fat, self healing tank and he doesn't care what you do to him.

His CC got nerfed with his rework, and he should be peeling, he has really short range CC which makes him good for peel by standing on his backline.

No? They buffed his CC and healing.

What got buffed? His W went from a 2 second root to 1.5

His ult? Cooldowns?

Did his cooldowns go down?

Question for you then. And I'm mostly saying this to view it from the other side rather than saying you are categorically wrong. I don't think there is an answer to the problem that would please everyone. If Maokai is spamming his abilities on you to stop you from getting to his allies, meaning he is largely ignoring the rest of your team, why shouldn't he be able to stop you from reaching his allies? If he devotes the lions share of his attention and resources to you shouldn't he have a major impact on your game?

Uh did you forget he ults and it'll hit anyone in the fight and root them? It's not like he only peels one guy and that's all.

Besides you're missing the point. It's bad gameplay to have 0 counterplay permapeel. I don't care if it's technically balanced or not.

The ult and possible saplings is why I left it at largely ignoring your team rather than completely. I don't really consider his ult spammable. Going by the title, I assumed you were referring primarily to twisted advance and bramble smash.

As to counterplay, mixed thoughts on that. Granted, there is not much your champion can do about the peel unless you are an edge case and have a way to ignore the CC/mechanics (Olaf or Fizz for example.) But you are acknowledging that his team is there, he is peeling for them after all, but where is your team? Counter play isn't only individual mechanics. Once the ult is out Maokai can only continue to peel one target at a time, is there anyone on the team that can go in with you? Do you have someone that can stall Maokai long enough that he can't peel before you are in his back line? Conversely, do you have a way to seperate Maokai from his team when he tries to peel so you can burn him down without interference? Is it viable for you to buy merc scimitar/banshees veil/merc treads to reduce his ability to peel you? What about running cleanse? Does your team have a range advantage you can use to poke the opposing team before going in? None of these are perfect solutions that always work or completely negate his ability to peel, but counter play is about more than what your champion and their abilities can do, it starts in champ select. If your team is relying on engaging in fights, and also relying on you and only you to engage the fight and the opposing team has a champ(s?) that excels at peeling, you are starting from a position of already having been counterplayed.
