Ezreal's Q now applies spell hits, and it wasn't mentioned in the patch notes.

Khristophoros··95 votes·17,210 views

So it applies Luden's, Rylai's, and Liandry's now. This is also the reason why it triggers Arcane Comet. This is a pretty big buff and it wasn't mentioned anywhere. Riot?

Edit: If you are about to say that it always triggered these, please do 2 things first:

  1. Check the history of LoL wiki on Ez Q.

  2. Read Meddler's posts in this thread.

That was a deliberate change, yeah. With everything going on it must have got missed when patch notes were put together.

May I ask why?

Why remove what makes "applies on-hit effects instead" abilities unique? Now they're just better than normal abilities, rather than different.

Quepha4 votes

I think most of those abilities already applied spell effects, but Ezreal was an exception because he was already insanely powerful.

XeroKimo2 votes

Ezreal's Q never applied on spell effects, it applied on hit effects,

This ranges from: Wit's end passive Spell blade passives Energized passives Revolver Passive Duskblade + Dirk Passive Botrk Passive Phantom Dancer Passive Muramana Passive

I never said it did.

A lot of the thinking there was that, while this did technically buff those abilities, it was more because it opened up alternate approaches, than because it added power to existing playstyles. Builds generally go for AA effects or spell effects, more than mixing the two, given the way the items in question tend to be at least somewhat multiplicative with each other.

It also addressed an issue where a couple of champs were just blocked from taking Runes that should otherwise have been good and healthy fits for them (GP and Ez at least with Arcane Comet for example, I might be forgetting one or two more).

Finally, and this one's pretty secondary, but still a benefit worth mentioning, it also removed some long running player confusion around how those abilities functioned with some effects ('This item says all my abilities will now do X, but it doesn't work with this ability, what's up?). Edit: For examples of that sort of confusion, even from people engaged enough to be posting on Boards, see further down this thread.

Hey Meddler I tested with spell vamp + lifesteal using Maw of Malmortius but Ezreal's Q does not get both at once. I am unaware of any other source of Spell Vamp in the game but I still find this strange. What's going on here?

Meanwhile it actually double dips with Muramana which is a serious issue. I hope you're aware of this.

I'm scared to check, but does that mean Azir applies on-hit effects now?

I mean, why close him off to certain builds and items he would logically want to purchase?

No.

Spells that only applied on-hit effects now also apply spell effects, but spells that didn't apply on-hits don't apply on-hits...

I think you missed the main point of what I was saying.

His argument was that "why restrict what champions can buy/choose if those items/runes make sense". Azir cannot trigger Press The Attack, or Lethal Tempo - in fact, he can't use most of the Precision tree despite the fact a lot of them make sense for him. Azir is an auto-attacker who cannot trigger auto-attack effects.

Ezreal's shtick was a skill-shot based marksman, just like Azir's shtick is a basic-attack mage. Yet only Ezreal got the World's Biggest Bone (well, not just Ezreal - but let's not pretend Fiora's gonna start buying Rylai's just because she can now).

I'm calling it now. Ez will be a problem when you get to balancing AP items and he somehow manages to bust Rylas or Ludens with Trinity and Bork

It is a direct buff to Muramana Ezreal, since now his Q applies two instances of the shock damage, one from the one hit effect, and one from the single target spell effect.

Wasn't the whole point of changing Runeglaive into Runic Echoes to stop Ezreal from abusing it? What's going to stop AP Ez from rushing Runic Echoes now?

Remlap12233 votes

He doesn't have Ranger's Trailblazer anymore? The whole reason he took Runeglaive was because Trailblazer gave him insane waveclear and sustain.

The Yetii Rider3 votes

You can still take item 3715 for 20% reduced damage taken. In a lane against assassins everyone would love that. Also true damage burn on-hit.

Eedat1 votes

The whole reason he took Runeglaive was because Trailblazer gave him insane waveclear and sustain.

Ezreal took smite Mid and built Runeglaive + Ludens + Lichbane.

TeCoolMage3 votes

I don't think runeglaive and lichbane stacked

Salron5 votes

Any why the hell would Ez buy Runic Echoes?

You know why Ez was buying Runeglaive right? It was applying spell effects which means he was able to proc Ludens on his Q once he completed Runeglaive, that is literally the only reason he was building it

And spell effects were removed from Runeglaive after one patch Where you do you people get the idea that Riot changed Runeglaive to Runic Echoes because of Ez?

The Yetii Rider1 votes

But now, Ezreal's Q has been changed under the hood. Now Ezreal's Q can apply spell effects on its own. So Runic Echoes will just function as a cheaper version of Luden's Echo for him.

Salron3 votes

And? Why would he buy that over the actual Ludens?

By your logic why doesn't every mage buy Runic over Luden WHAT is the benefit of buying the shittier version of the same item while ALSO being forced to take smite just to purchase it?

It's not just Ez, other spells that apply on hits like GP Q and Yasuo Q are also applying onhit now too

Someone told me that this was intentional so that these spells could make use of comet and such but I don't get why it wasnt in the patch notes if thats the case.

Either way Ez Q applying spell effects doesn't sound too bad unless AP becomes top tier or something

A good Ezreal player should not fear any of those clowns, especially the ones who go mid. I expect any serious Ezreal player to Arcane Shift every Zed ult with the correct timing so that Zed lands where Ezreal was before he blinked. That's a thing, just so you know.

He's not a good mid because he has no wave clear. Wave clear allows you to quickly shove the lane and play around the map instead of staying mid all game.

Assassins like Zed generally beat Ezreal 1v1. We can theory craft situations in which Ezreal can survive a Zed all in, but it's almost always Zed being proactive with Ezreal being reactive in this matchup. You can't expect Ezreal to survive every Zed ult attempt by just using E at the right time. Sure, Ezreal can E as soon as Zed's R finishes its initial cast to widen the distance, but what if Zed still has W? What if Zed does a W E Q W to chunk Ezreal and force Ezreal to E early?

That's like saying no Ezreal should fear a Blitzcrank because he can E out of Blitz's grab. Not if Blitz Flash - Ult - Q's you.

Thegreatxiu5 votes

I have to chime in here as an AP Ez mid main throughout all of the last season. Ezreal's global game is actually quite good from the mid lane because you're generally able to poke people out of lane then roam. Ezreal does have some troublesome matchups but they tend to be people who can sustain or trade pokes with Ezreal mid, which gets monumentally harder after sheen revolver buy.

Assassins like Zed generally don't beat Ezreal 1v1 in the AP setup. Ezreal just does more burst damage. And if Ezreal is the one catching the assassin out, I.E Ezreal gets to use his ult in the fight, it's impossible for any assassin to win that fight, unless the assassin is fed AF. Also specifically against Zed the last thing you proposed is just silly. "What if Zed does a W E Q W to chunk Ezreal and force Ezreal to E early?" If you're playing Ezreal mid and get hit by Zed's E apart from him ulting on you you're doing something wrong. Zed is forced to use his W and Q to trade pokes with Ezreal and his W E doesn't have the range of Ezreal's Q.

And for your last statment, no Ezreal shouldn't fear a Blitzcrank because he can E out of Blitz's grab. Just because Blitzcrank could do something else doesn't mean that Ezreal should fear him. You shouldn't fear someone because they have a secondary weapon. That's like if a knight disarmed another knight and the first knight then ran away because the second knight pulled out a kitchen knife.

  1. he has no waveclear so AP Ez wouldn't be a top tier pick.
  2. having good itemization doesnt necessarily turn a champion into a top tier. For example we have item 3151 item 3116 but Brand isnt a top tier. Not saying Ezreal would be guaranteed to be balanced either but im just pointing out itemization doesnt always turn a champ into a top tier.

On hit effects and on spell effects are different.

If you played AP ezreal then you should know his Q never applied luden's echo for an example.

Not after the first version of Runeglaive, anyway.

Not after the first version of Runeglaive, anyway.

That's different. That was a Sheen item, so that was an on-hit effect (so for instance Annie's Q doesn't proc Sheen). The new Runic Echoes is a Luden's Echo type item, which is a spell effect.

Atanchan5 votes

It was an on-hit effect, yes, but it was an on-hit effect that procced spell effects. There was actually a short period of time where mid Ezreals were taking Smite just so they could build it, because the lesser Lich Bane that was Runeglaive combined with stuff like Luden's gave his Q unreal poke.

Then Runeglaive got immediately patched so it acted like other Spellblade effects.

^ Makes total sense for it to count as a spell as it is...a spell, right? It costs mana and has a CD doesn't it? has never played as Ezreal, but I feel this is something that should've existed a loooooong time ago and Riot just snuck it in realizing that too perhaps?

Not really. For a long time now, there've been abilities that are more like special attacks than spells, such as Mystic Shot and Parrrley. Subsequently, they were treated as attacks and not spells, applying on-hit effects but not spell effects.

Exactly. It's important for Ezreal's Q to apply on-hits because Sheen is an on-hit effect, basically.

Actually, Muramana is both on-hit and on unit-targeted spell. That means theoretically Ezreal's Q might apply it twice now. I'm gonna go check that really fast and edit my post when I know.

Edit: Tested and confirmed! Ezreal's Q currently applies Muramana's proc twice.

Numbers:

Ezreal level: 1 Ezreal AD: 146 Ezreal Mana: 1360 Target Dummy Armor: 100 (meaning all physical damage is divided by 2: 100/(100 + 100) = 100/200 = 1/2 = 0.5)

Q damage: 35 (+182) = 217. After armor, Q damage alone = 108.5.

Muramana: consumes 3% current mana to deal 6% current mana in extra damage.

Please note that I'm using Manaflow Band in testing, so Q's mana drain is moot.

Muramana damage from one proc: (1360 mana)*0.03 [aka 3%] = 40.8 mana. Doubling that, it should give 81.6 damage, or... 40.8 damage after armor. Imagine that.

Second proc: 1360-41 mana = 1319 mana. 1319*0.06 [aka 6%] = 79.14 damage, or 39.57 after armor. Total after armor with two procs: 78.97 damage.

Now, actual damage dealt: 187-188. I'll call it 187.5, since that's close enough.

187.5-108.5 (from Q) = 79 damage left. That's significantly more than the 40.6 damage that he should get from 1 Muramana proc. However, post-armor damage from two procs is 78.97, which is rounded to 79 in 97% of cases. 79 being exactly how much damage is left to find after the Q damage.

Uh-oh.
