A plea to all those support mains out there: What should a bronze support main do?

NuggeTech··2 votes·515 views

Hey guys!

I don't really like ranting and creating a discussion that does not help me become a better player, like asking questions as to which champ and to buy and what not. But now I am making an exception. The reason why I love being a support main, because I feel nice saving my teammates from near death situations, stunning or knocking the enemy player whenever he/her is about to use an ult. It just feels so nice and fulfilling even though the teammates don't want to thank me. And also one thing I've learned while playing as a support, is that a good support should know how to engage and disengage a fight and ,most importantly, how to ward. Whenever, I play any other role, I always try to tell my teammates to do so. Warding gives control over the map and makes the opposition paranoid. However, with that said, a support can only be good as the adc. And in ranked, we are USUALLY grouped together according to our "MMR". Which means for a good support a good adc is needed. Now going by my latest game, I died quite many times. All those times to save my adc. And what does the adc do? Flame me, because I wasn't being his "AID". Not only that, he was using his ult to kill tanks rather than stranglers. Not once. Not twice. Not thrice. But in fact every time he used it. The player's excuse, so that he can wave clear. Another instance, he was low on health and was being chased by a Darius. Not only that, he thought"You know what, lemme challenge him,in ranked" . After many pings, he backed off. And when I questioned him, he did answer. In a way, I mostly expected but did not appreciate it.

So I wanted to know, what am I supposed to do in this case. I really love being a support. In fact almost every online multiplayer game I play I prefer someone who will stand behind everyone, keep everyone alive and make sure the my teammates are safe from the opposition. I don't want the kills, I don't want to be involved in something crazy that is applicable of being uploaded to social media. I just want to win. However, like I said a support can only be good as the teammate, in league's case the ADC. I really want to escape bronze and start climbing the ladder. But just can't. I am ready to listen to what you guys have to say and dw, I am fine with criticism. Just help fellow player out here.

P.S. Sorry for the really long post. I am just very passionate about being a support and when it gets ruined, I become disheartened. And to show my proof of being a support main (and tooting my own horn) I reached lvl7 with Sona in a matter of a few months. Please take some time to read this through, I'm pretty sure many out there who feel this way.

Thank you

Supporting playing in bronze is terrible experience imho. Because you can get that one player who completely feeds and nothing you can do about it. Personally, I rather duo Q with someone I can trust to adc and not screw me over 24/7.

Yeah, its a pain.

Personally, I would just play a magier support. That way, you can take over lane if the ADC fcks up. (The likes of Brand or Zyra if you really wanted damage, but Lulu or Karma can also work.)

I agree. I do that myself often. I even take advantage if I get a Jihn ADC, I'll go pick my main Ahri, that works well with him. If he happens to be trash, I just need to get myself fed and help out.

Other than that, My two best ones are Leona and Raka. Which both at Mastery 6 along with my Mastery 6 Ahri and Teemo. xD

But what if the ADC decides to be a petulant child abt me taking his creeps. He will quit and feed, which has happened a lot.

What would you recommend to do? Support is my favorite role, transitioning to another role isn't really easy.

You could get or find a friend that you know is good at adc and que with him. Most my adc friends like to add good supports to go into ranked so they don't get a shyt support themselves.

You could try Mid or Jungle too. As some Support champs can go mid effectively. Jungle is good if you like playing tanky supports, where you find a good jungler that can go full tanky.

If I get an adc thats worried about creeps - And he farms above decently, I'd to ignore the farm. If not, I'd ask mid or top if they need some help and roam. Its bit more easier to do as bard though.

So, there's a few things you can do.

First, I'd suggest trying to duo with a good ADC if possible. Whenever you find yourself playing with a really good ADC who isn't toxic, add them to your friends list and maybe play with them later.

If you don't want to do that, try to play champions who can do some carrying by themselves. That doesn't need to be with damage (though it helps), but what you really want is a good ability to make picks and to protect your allies while punishing enemy mistakes. I'd recommend Enchanters here, Nami, Sona, Bard, Lulu, Zilean, Zyra, etc. over more passive/defensive supports such as Janna or Soraka; I definitely wouldn't recommend all-in initiation supports (such as Leona) because they are far too reliant on good follow-up from your team, and are useless without that.

If your ADC isn't very good and feels like a liability, then once the tower in your lane falls you should work out who is the best player on your team and attach yourself to them. Try to tell your ADC to freeze the lane and farm safely, and go and help mid or top get a tower, or help your jungler get objectives. Go back to the ADC if the enemy duo lane pushes them in and is threatening to dive - don't just leave them alone - but try to spend as much of your your time as possible roaming and helping other, more competent players to excel rather than trying to salvage the bad ADC.

Don't just blindly sacrifice yourself to save your ADC. If your ADC is incompetent anyway, them being alive won't help your team much. If you are a good support, your being alive and helping your team is actually more useful than a poor ADC who doesn't contribute meaningfully. So long as you are still there to keep your most important teammates alive and help set up picks, you are more useful than an under-performing ADC. Oh, and especially - don't run in to save a teammate who is obviously dead. It's never worth dying to try to save someone who can't be saved.

Don't sacrifice yourself for others. They're far too likely to turn around and die with you. Especially in bronze.

Play another role. Not joking.

The other role I am somewhat better at mid. However, I do not if this is just coincidence or rotten luck. Whenever I play mid, I either do really well or bad. However, contrary to what you might think, the results are opposite. In my young league career, my best kda ha been 23/3 and yet we lost that match. My worst has been 3/12., yet we won that match.

Another thing, it is not easy to pick up another role. Atm i am able to play almost any mage support. Just got lux, though the results have varied, I have not fed, yet.

Sadly, being a Support main means having to put up with all the crap - it is always your fault no matter what.

(or it is the Junger's, naturally - it is never the fault of a laner when they die, you see!)

Were it not for the highs being just as amazing, if not better, than the lows of playing a Support I would've quit years ago.

What high is there? If being stuck in bronze V is a high, then that is just snazzy.

I meant "high" as in high points in-game. When you have a really good game as a Support.

Play Braum with AD quints and Grasp, go all in, win. Almost always works, especially against disorganised and inexperienced players who have no idea what to do when they get tagged by his passive - 90% of them will run away without even trying to fight back, letting you at the very least chunk them. Never be afraid of using your shield for the damage reduction aggressively to force trades.

Here's what you do. You grab Lux, Morgana, Orianna, Sona, or Karma and you obliterate the enemy laners. At that low an elo you can't count on your allies knowing how to play so you have to do literally EVERYTHING yourself.
