[Discussion] Let's talk about Ignite

##summoner 14 What use does it have?

It used to be a counterpick when facing healing based champions like Soraka DrMundo and so on, since it applies Grievous Wounds. Now it's just picked because it does 80 - 505 True Damage, and everything else about it that it has like (Grievous Wounds, Sight reveal on the target during the duration) is completely ignored and possibly even forgotten.

##Issues

It's too dominating, it's one of the biggest things that decides who wins lanes these days. You basically get punished if you don't take it, because your enemy will have a massive advantage against you.

Ignite is a unique summoner spell in the aspect that it's the only summoner spell that deals direct damage, and I believe that Ignite needs to lose a part of what it has to offer or have another nerf, because as of right now it has too much too offer. Ignite is oftenly picked for better burst potential, and I believe that, that potential can be buffed elsewhere, or individually for those champions who would suffer against this kind of drastic change

##A list of suggestions to choose from

  • Remove Grievous Wounds.
  • Remove Sight on Target during the duration.
  • Nerf True Damage numbers.
  • Reduce Target Range.
  • Remove the ability to proc Runes with it.

##Final thoughts

Ultimately I find it that Ignite shouldn't exist as a damage Summoner Spell, if it existed as a simple Grievous Wounds Non-Damaging Debuff Summoner Spell similar to how Exhaust is then that would be fine. If Ignite was to be removed, I think it would balance out the power difference between all Summoner Spells.

Make it non-lethal. Can't bring you below 1HP on its own.

That's literally all ignite has ever needed. Dying to the 5th tick has always felt shitty or dying to a walk-off ignite.

League has needed non-lethal damage forever. It would solve so many problems.

This kind of change sounds really good, I like the idea that it follows...

###If you want free damage that's all you get, but don't expect me to get a kill for you.

Also makes it better as an opening move rather than its use as a finisher.

I've heard from a lot of people that the game overall is balanced around Flash or something along those lines.

Infernape2 votes

It is. Flash is too intrinsically linked to the game for it to be reworked or removed. Doing so would require Riot to rework pretty much all champions (especially immobile ones like Illaoi, Ashe and Morde).

Riot themselves considered removing it years ago and decided against it.

Begs the question why they keep it as a summoner spell. Just put the darn thing next to the recall button.

Because having access to flash and 2 other summoner spells would be busted

That is the worst argument i've ever seen on the boards.

Yeh? You must not have seen many arguments.

But humor me.

How so?

People normally use ignite for all in's that they know can win, and flashing out doesnt help, because guess what? they have it too. 9/10 times. and without flash many many champions with 0 mobility would be actually useless. As for the baron stealing, or any objective steal, or even to finish off a kill, requires some level of skill, and doesnt always pay off if done wrong or mis calculated, many champions can do it without flash too i.e; shaco, Camille, zac, And LITERALLY any champion when blastcones are up for the respective side.

Flash is literally meant for most of the things you've said, but hey, maybe anyone who gets 5 manned should have 0 ways of getting out of it and just accept their fate. plus flash has a very long CD so inbetween uses (which you should know about if the team lets you know when enemies flash or not, and play around it accordingly) and with such large gaps between flash uses, those WITH flash up can capitalize on it, its an essential part of league of legends, and Without it would make the Game extremely boring for any champion without a dash, or mobility spell that can help them traverse the map in emergency or be at all aggressive in lanes where flash may be needed in order to get through it.

for the whole discussion, i think ignite is currently over tuned, and should be easily to see when in multiple games in a row, both sides have 3-4 Ignites on the team, and think a nice way to balance it out would be to take away the grievous wounds, and give it back its True vision, giving it some utility, while making it less oppressive, since there is already easily accessible to any champion in the game, doesn't matter what champion you are playing, you can Easily aquire the healing debuff, and some have it built in like aatrox. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

and for a comment below with it making a player deal more damage to one specific player, that isn't a terrible idea to go about it, but would make certain champions overly busted. and i dont think anyone wants to see irelia or yasuo coming at you with the bonus Conqueror damage, with also the form of ignite's bonus damage.

Although, maybe having it do something like what older versions of exhaust did with lowering Resistances during its effect, making them more vulnerable, like someone on fire probably would be.

Furthermore, for the argument, you basically point out, "hey i cant win, because i dont know how to use my flash like how my enemy does, and they should fix that" and that is a stupid way to look at it. but thats just how it seems when worded the way you have it. "i cant secure a smite on baron, and they flashed over the wall and outsmited me :'(" "i flashed in on my enemy, and mis calculated my damage and he got away with his own flash :'( lets go cry on the boards" [slayer-jinx-catface]

EDIT: i realize this is all over the place, i wrote quickly while in Que, and noticed some other comments on the way. so there is that. 2nd EDIT: Consider yourself Humored.

What if instead of being direct damage, it was some kind of debuff increasing your damage against the enemy champion (and still applying GW) ? It could be picked by supports who want to play offensively, and those who play defensively would pick Exhaust. And most importantly it wouldn't proc Electrocute

BLIGHTBRINGER1 votes

It could be good in theory, because it meant that you could potentially have a way of playing around it.

Like a single-target Vlad ult, but without damage or healing? That'd be cool
