What's the point of Hail of Blades?

If it's only going to be used by a small pool of champions? (Ex: XinZhao example provided by Riot) It's going to be like the Rune Predator upon release that was only picked for Hecarim at first, it's still quite an underpicked Rune when compared to other Runes since only currently (Warwick - sometimes, Rammus - rarely, Annie - by Anniebot, and Nunu) use it.

Many others have also said that Attack Speed based Rune doesn't belong in the Domination path, and I agree.

When I heard of a new Rune that was going to be released I was really excited, but later on I was a bit disappointed with the current outcome. It's literally just a renamed Lethal Tempo combined with Press the Attack mechanic. I mean really Riot? There were so many other options that could of been considered. If there was a struggle to figure what Rune to give to the Domination Path why not give other Paths Runes (that need them) that you might or might not have ideas for while you come up with something to add to the Domination Path.

I know for a fact that a lot of players miss Deathfire Touch, and we were told by Riot that it was replaced by Aery but that Rune feels more targeted towards supports or Enchanters in particular (also what many people on boards have said).

I was considering it myself. AA Qreset. Q. BONK.

Since Mordes AS is really low. Rageblade might be a must for that build

Why Rageblade and not Nashor's?

Nashor's gives a lot of AS up-front without the need to stack up, gives more AP up-front (you need an additional ~204 AP from other sources before a fully stacked Rageblade gives as much AP as Nashor's does), and has 20% CDR.

Can you explain 204 ap?

Same! I was also thinking Diana with a nashors tooth into essence reaver. Combine all 3 for ability spam lol

Tbh i feel a lot of champs will end up having a use for this if they have a dash or stealth and want burst. Imo its an all around better lethal tempo that is harder for ADCs to abuse because its a forced trade off to use the domination tree over a more preferable ADC specific tree.

You get 3 autos but they start instantly with no wind up, so you can just get your burst and adjust instead of waiting for a long time then suddenly getting your damage to kick off and being forced to stay still to auto or you waste your AS with no safety benefits or ensurances youll be able to have the target stay in range.

I think lucian will love this personally, as he has a dash to get free lethality from and the bonus AS will help him rotate his abilities faster for his burst.

If they wanted burst with a dash/stealth, wouldn't you get more value of an electrocute proc or dark harvest stack then just autoing faster 3 times?

In electro v. hail, 3 attacks to free burst damage that scales with your AD/AP vs. just attacking 3 times but faster. Which sounds more appealing?

Unless your name is twitch then this doesn't seem worth it to me over the other keystone options, even with electro you get better cheese potential to snowball.

It's definitely worse then Press and Phase on the Dyr.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

How? He will get kited more as Phoenix which almost always takes Phase Rush and will do less overall damage as Tiger who would rather have PtA which buffs the dot damage which is where almost ALL of his damage comes from. This is only better than Press on Tiger if you can get like 2 extra autos off with it, but at that point you should already be winning that fight and it doesn't matter what keystone you take.

Also, Domination sucks weiners for Udyr who would rather have the AS from Precision or the useful runes in Sorcery which you definitely can't have if you go top lane where Resolve secondary is near required to function and in the jungle you can't afford to go Dom+Sorcery since you will clear unbelievably slow without AS.

Vayne born for her with sudden impact and relentless hunter

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Ingenious is probably better since you are almost always going to buy BoRK again on vayne after the buff. I don't see why you wouldn't. Relentless does nothing for you in combat which is when you are almost always going to want the movement speed.

I've seen some compare it to other keystones while holding back some crucial details.

Domination keystones: Electrocute has a way longer cooldown. Dark Harvest requires time to stack up. Predator requires boots, has a long cooldown and has a short channel time. This keystone is the first in the domination tree that can actively be used in the laning phase.

Precision keystones: PTA requires 3 basic attacks in order to activate, only you third attack and onward will take advantage of this rune. Doesn't give AS Lethal Tempo is in this regard quite similar but activates after 1.5 seconds, so a little less front loaded but much more backloaded. Conqueror: Gated behind preparation and gives AD instead of AS, total effect will probably be more damage though. But moreover, these keystones are in the precision tree, which give attack speed instead of damage.

I think this keystone is better suited for fighters/bruisers that want quick trades. Especially during the laning phase this rune will be impactful. Late game where the fights against durable opponents are more drawn out, this won't be as useful as some other keystones. It probably neither will be as useful as Electrocute when you have to quickly dispose of a single enemy.

Fail of Blades indeed seems to be lost in terms of identity. I think its overall power level is unusually low for every class and I think its too similar to certain other keystones.

Suggestion: rework to each basic attack increases ability damage by X% and stack up Y times. This way some mages can use it, adcs, some assassins, I bet fighters might especially like it. Numbers can always be chosen to be appropriate.

Jeanne fan club2 votes

This kind of seems like it will work great on bruisers. Darius Tryndamere Aatrox Camille Kled Olaf Volibear XinZhao Yorick all seem like they would benefit a ton from this actually.

Idk, looks like a solid rune to me, probs gonna need a ranged circumstance to keep it from being busted on Vayne or Varus or other ranged champions cuz its legit just a faster version of tempo.

WTBeGirl100EUhr1 votes

To go through your list in order:

Darius maybe gets an extra AA. He needs to use his W slow to position his Q, and without using the W slow - which is already an AA reset - he doesn't have the sticking power to lay down repeated autos. You're going to waste 1 attack because of the AA reset at the best of times.

Trynd, Aatrox might but probably benefit more from PTA/Conq. Probably benefits more from PTA/Conq but we'll see.

Camille is a caster reliant on specific empowered auto attacks. She has 0 synergy with this rune other than negligible magic damage on hit from her ult - which is around 4% of her total damage to champions (source: https://lolalytics.com/ranked/worldwide/platinum/plus/champion/Camille/)

Kled gets his W burst off faster, but his problem has always been killing things that don't die to W, rather than not being able to get W off. Kled needs to burst harder - not faster - in his runes, so won't take this.

Olaf uses predator for target access in the jungle, and comet for lane advantage top lane. I don't see this being better than those options. PTA already gives him the option of damage if he wants it and is probably better than this.

Volibear uses predator for target access in the jungle, and has options for Aftershock and PTA already (Grasp top lane). His auto-attacks are not individually powerful (which they need to be for attack-speed to be worthwhile).

Xin is about the only champion I actually can see taking this rune as it lets him get his Q combo off faster for burst damage when ganking.

Why would Yorick, a caster reliant on damage inflicted by his ghouls/maiden ever want attack speed?

ChaddyFantome2 votes

The goal is to open up diferent tree combinations. The introduction of this keystone makes the tree more appealing to a bigger breadth of champions and gives champions that already like thw teee more options to consider.

Along with the new Stormrazor, and lE changes, i can see it being appealing for assassins or bruisers that wanna opt for a more DPS ish leaning build that helps with splitpushing and gives them some wiggle room against tanks at the cost of less immediate squishy killing power.

I can already see Graves Kled Twitch Zed LeeSin Volibear Rengar Riven Ekko

Using it.

And maybe Braum As A Troll Build.

Rathar Dashing1 votes

how would it work with Jhin

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

It won't. The buff will fall off way before you get the use out of it since Jhin can NOT get 3 autos out in 1.5 seconds. It's physically impossible. All it does is make his 4th shot after stacking on creeps do more damage and even then I don't see it being worth it. I could be wrong though, but I feel like Comet is much more reliable as it isn't completely useless after laning phase (after laning phase you only get an AD steroid on your first 2 autos and those autos aren't the ones that matter).

Rathar Dashing1 votes

but what if it actually increased his attack speed. It says it increases his attack speed, which could be bonus or total. For example, Frozen Heart actually lowers his attack speed, as well as his AD. So could this do both, but in the other way? That would be pretty cool.

There has to be less than 1.5 seconds in between each attack. So it could definitely have value on Jhin.

Riven has no need for attack speed. Neither does Lee, Rengar and Zed. I just don't see it being effective on these guys... unless you were simply talking about Stormrazor. Then okay.

honestly doesn't look that appealing to me.

Fuck even XinZhao options for phase rush nowadays over the percision attack speed runes, so idk what exactly this does to entice xin when he never takes those and can take domination runes secondary if he really wanted to.

There's a lot of stuff that doesn't belong in the domination tree (ingenious hunter, ghost poro, IMO zombie ward could've been in another tree.. doesn't make sense having 2 vision options then an actual stacking damage option.) and this one I don't see why its a keystone let alone a domination rune.

All I see this good for is Twitch combined with sudden impact on his Q. Anything else just take percision, this is a skirmisher/marksmen rune and they all value the sustain until they scale way better then any of the other domination tree runes.

Thing is, Domination is about burst and target access according to it's description. Vision plays a major role in the latter, so it makes perfect sense that Domination has vision tools besides movespeed and burst damage boosters.

It allows him to get the knockup much faster, therefore mitigating the need for phase rush. Although with this Xins' AS could become so high it's faster than his W animation, lessening the impact it has on him.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

I don't know what the hard breakpoint is on his W but it DOES scale with AS to a point meaning that chances are it would take a couple AS items combined with this to get there. Even when Xin went IE+Shiv he never reached the point where W was too slow, so I doubt this is going to change that.

The hard breakpoint is 2.5 AS because it has a minimum animation duration of 0.4 seconds. If you take human reaction time into account the soft cap is more in the area of 2.0 AS however.

Many others have also said that Attack Speed based Rune doesn't belong in the Domination path, and I agree.

It's not a conventional AS rune, instead being a burst rune that utilizes the AS stat, so it makes sense for it to be on the burst-oriented path.

That said, it seems like it'd be pretty nuts on Rengar, letting him unload a lot of damage very quickly after Q due to the massive combined AS steroid he'd have.

WTBeGirl100EUhr1 votes

It affects you first 3 auto attacks. Rengar's burst combo from ult/brush is AA=>E+W in air=>Q=>Q, which would completely consume the buff through AA resets with no effect.

It's honestly probably not that bad. You benefit from every tier of Domination and can still secondary down Precision to get the runes that matter. Kindred highest pickrate is Precision+Domination anyway. It's not like it is going to be a completely troll pick compared to PtA depending on the scenario. If you REALLY need the damage amp to kill a tankier target then yeah, take PtA, but if the enemy team doesn't have a super tank OR if you have someone on your team who is already going to take PtA (which could potentially be almost every ADC depending on how hard Fleet gets nerfed), then this is honestly a fairly good option. Starting the fight triple critting someone late game as Kindred from REALLY far away REALLY fast is potentially REALLY good. Also, probably does better in ganks since chances are you are getting disengaged off of before you can utilize the damage amp from PtA meaning getting a potentially 2 extra autos off in the gank could be more worthwhile than getting 1 amped auto or whatever.

Nocturne is going to love this shit.

His strongest build is assassin one-shot, but he still needs attack speed (it generally takes 2 actual attacks). This rune will let him skimp on attack speed and unload a disgusting amount of burst as soon as he impacts someone.

Depending on how it synergizes with Stormrazor, it could be even better than I'm imagining.
