Zed's ult damage

I don't want to cry about it or anything like that, I'm just curious on the process thought behind this: why does Zed's ult damage take into account pre-mitigation damage instead of mitigated damage?.

For those (rare) people out there that don't know: Zed's Death Mark's stored damage doesn't take into account mitigation, this means that the stored damage of Zed's ult takes into consideration the damage he would've done if you had 0% damage reduction so if he hit you with 200 ad his ult would store 50/70/90 damage from that hit no matter if you had 400 armor or only 60 or if he dealt 10 damage or the full 200 with the hit. This doesn't mean his ult does true damage, it just means that the damage he stores can be (and usually is against tanks) higher than the actual damage you take while he's storing it up.

So again: why does Zed's ult take pre-mitigation damage into consideration instead of mitigated damage?.

Is actually close to the same, if it was mitigated damage it woudl be mitigated twice as your resistances would proc again whenever the mark detonates. By making it pre-mitigation it means you only apply your resistances once. In ideal conditions that would mean you get exactly the same damage twice, the problem comes from flat armor pen. Many players don't know that you can actually have negative armor and negative Magic resist, negative magic resist is treated similar to 0 magic resist but negative armor is treated as an amplification of the damage from 2 minus the same formula as the damage reduction from armor. This is probably better explained with an example.

Lets Assume you Have 125 Armor and Zed has 25 Flat armor penetration. And that zed ults does 100% of stored damage (I know the % is actually less but it changes on levels and makes the math more complicated without adding much to the point I'm trying to make) If Zed does 500 damage pre-mitigation the formula goes as follow.

  • Under Normal Circumstances Zed would do 250 damage (you get 50% damage reduction from your armor)
  • His ult would Store 600 damage (25 negative armor means 20% damage amplification)
  • Once the mark Procs You would be dealt 300 damage (again 50% damage reduction)

As you can see instead of doing the normal 500 damage he is doing 550 damage due to how the maths works out, the more flat armor pen he has the more the difference would be. I would create a chart for you but (With armor pen versus extra damage %) but I"m too lazy and the example should be enough

One way to fix this would be making the stored damage be mitigated by resistances but make his ult deal true damage instead but people will complain about True damage on Zed being too op
