Riot: why not have CoTC scale from resistances instead of health?

I think this would cut its early game power, make it weaker but not garbage on divers, and make it perfect on tanks. Thoughts?

I still think that it should just be changed to bonus HP scaling instead of maximum HP. Then tanks can still use it while damage dealers like Diana and Riven would get little to no benefit from it.

that would probably make it completely useless early game considering the fact no one has much bonus health even if you grab some in runes, the answer to that would be to increase the base to compensate, but that would mean it is still good on those damage champs.

But is also has a base scaling, 10 + 10 times your level, so it would still be useful because of that. For example lets compare a Diana, using it at level 3, typical level for an engage in lane if you get a chance, compared to Darius top.

For Diana: Scaling HP yellows=36 bonus HP at level 3 Doran's ring=60 bonus HP Base HP at level 3=722 Current CoTC shield=[10+(10x3)+(818HPx(5%xnumber of nearby enemy champions lets say just one)]x1.08 for Runic Armor=87.372 Revised shield working off of bonus HP=48.384

For Darius: Base HP at level 3=730 assuming he got corrupting potion first Current CoTC shield=82.62 Revised Shield=43.2

This would lower early shields by about half for most champions, which hurts offensive champions like Riven and Diana more since they don't have sustain like most tank champions have at the beginning by lowering their shielding sustain, but the comparative power drop is marginal.

Now lets compare that to level 18

For Diana: Scaling HP yellows=216 bonus HP RoA=500 HP Base HP at level 18=2119 Current CoTC shield=358.29 Revised Shield=243.864

For Darius: BC=300 HP+DMP=500 HP+SV=500 HP+Sterak's Gage=400 HP Base HP at level 18=2282 Current CoTC shield=420.228 Revised shield=297

It is also important to note that Diana and Riven have an additional shield in their kits that also gets bolstered by runic armor which is why they are doing so well with the defensive mastery tree. The thing is, currently CoTC gives these non-tank champions shields that when added to their HP gives them tank like survivability while sacrificing only a little burst from TL. Basically stacking the shields then late game trying to engage on all 5 to get around 1,000 HP shield just from CoTC on top of their regular shield. Now from this math it shows that the numbers would need to be tweaked a bit, lower the base and raise the percentage to give offensive champions less of a shield should they build one or two HP items while giving tanks more of a shield once they get some HP items.

you have now convinced me to your cause. I think this would be a very interesting way of preventing the abuse of this keystone considering it is now riven's most popular keystone, even though the most defensive item she gets is a black cleaver, and maybe steraks

You mean make the shield scale with resistances akin to item 3156 ?

Yeah. Combine armor and MR scaling to the shield instead of health.

Hmm...

Considering Hecarim doesn't buy resistances as much as flat health...

Considering Leona builds tons of resists...

Riven....

It sounds plausible, but I'm sure there is probably somebody we're missing here that would make this impractical.

The answer to that is simple:

Because having it scale on resistances would mean exponential scaling.

Let's say that your supposed Colossus scales like Maw's Shield, 1:1 with Armor and MR. Also, the CoC user in question has 100 Armor and, for the easiness of the argument, 100 shield strength, giving him an effective shield strength against physical damage (epHP) of 200. With the additional 100 Armor, his shields strength is bumped to 200, and his Armor to 200 as well. However, the epHP would become 600, tripling the previous amount.

With it scaling on HP, you have linear scaling. Same example, but shield scales 1:1 with HP. Initially, user has 100 HP and 100 Armor, and a shield strength of 100 and epHP of 200. Adding an additional 100 HP, thus doubling the user's HP value, gives a shield strength of 200 and an epHP of 400, doubling the previous amount.

i like this idea that way not every tank takes it and some can take the other keystones
