Today I got reported by a support for telling him to buy a Sightstone

L Psy Kongroo··65 votes·4,233 views

Can we just ban these idiots already? I have neither the time nor the patience to argue with someone in-game about the finer dynamics of League and why every support EVER should get a Sightstone at some point (and if they don't, they're trash).

It's literally reached the point where I have to queue as support 100% of the time, or I get stuck with dumbasses like this who has no clue how to play the role properly.

I main support. I buy sightstone 100% of the time. If i am playing a support that actually scales well with items, sona, zyra and the like, and if i feel like i'll need to carry the game harder, i get the gold income sightstone combo item so i can build more sefishly. It's not hard to figure out they were designed so that supports can build more damage or tankiness.

I also play and enjoy jungle, and quite often in my elo i see supports simply skip the sightstone all together and i've learned something from interacting with these people.

NEVER tell a support who doesnt naturally purchase a sightstone to get one.

The reason? If these people don't normally use the item, They wouldnt know what to do with it anyway. Using your sightstone optimally is a skill that takes experience to understand when and where to ward.

I can say i see just as many supports that buy a sightstone and literally never use it or use it improperly as i do supports that just ignore the purchase altogether. And if they arent going to take advantage of it, i'd rather just have another underfed mid on my team.

Junglers in high elo build sightstone alongside the support. Professionals say vision is too hard for just one person to have it.

support in 2016 = secondary roles for mid mains so they can still play their favorite champs.

If you called him trash, then it could have been a valid report.

I didn't. First I asked him politely to get one, since we obviously had no vision. Then I told him. Then I begged him. Then I said: "All supports get a Sightstone. It's part of playing the role correctly. Any support who doesn't know why a Sightstone is important buy shouldn't be playing the role, and is probably bad at the game."

I guess technically I called him trash, but that statement is hardly grounds for a report.

May I ask if you play support? As a support main myself, sightstone is often not as mandatory as everyone thinks and can really put your team behind if your support is a champion that needs fast stats in order to be of use. There are ways around buying a sightstone and supports should not always be criticized whenever they feel one isn't necessary. Afterall, sightstone is NOT binded to the role in the same manner that item 3711, item 3706, and item 3715 are tied to the jungle.

You can get enough out of using your free trinkets for the first few levels, but Ruby sightstone is a really good item now and a lot of supports rush it before even completing the main support item.

crippler383 votes

why would I rush the ruby sightstone? it's another chunk of my precious gold being spent on a bit of hp and ONE extra ward in my sightstone charges, until I get more active items I won't be able to use its passive so why would I rush it?

I just wanna know plz if there's something I'm missing the knowledge must be mine as a mainly support player.

Angry Monster2 votes

gold efficiency changed on it. Its gold efficient now even if you do not have actives.

That said i think upgrading it after completing 2 other items is optimal personally.

Baby Ghoul15 votes

It's a symptom of a much larger issue.

Why are so many people getting support, but not playing it? These people have always existed to some extent, but in the past few months I see them quite frequently. They're KSing, they're building AP items first, they're taking ignite against 2 assassins, and sometimes they're even stealing farm.

I am a support main, but I'd be lying if I said it was a cake walk climbing like it was compared to last season when I was a top lane main. It's difficult, but I think the scaling issues and lack of independence make support less desirable. I think a lot of people do recognize the support's quiet influence on the game, but not many people want to have to trade that much in soloqueue ranked. It's not hard to see why either.

Damage creep has effected everyone, but I don't think the effects on the support role have been talked about enough. You need to do damage in this game to be effective, and that's especially true in lower ELO. That's why we're seeing so many "supports." The carry mentality has gotten pretty out of control recently.

At the same time supports are an important part of League. A team can't function without one against a team of equal skill. Supports aren't supposed to light up the map, but we do battle for vision control. And really Oracle is one of the most powerful items in this game, true vision is so valuable and used for way more than clearing wards.

I'd like to see an update to supports sometime in the future, because I only see this problem getting worse in Season 7, especially with the assassin rework on the horizon. Support gameplay should be updated. It is a bit shallow and not so rewarding at the moment.

Kairya2 votes

I think the underlying problem exists on all lanes at the moment and I wouldn't exclusively fault damage creep for it.

The end of game statistics put an obvious focus on KD(A), which is misleading for a lot of people. Instead of playing for the win, they find more satisfaction in having decent statistics. "I have a decent KDA = I am not responsible for this loss / I am responsible for our win. "

This has been reinforced by champion mastery turning the previous mindset to: "I don't actually care whether we win or lose, I would like to have a S-grade."

On a side note it also seems also to be extremly difficult to earn S grades on more traditional supporters. At least this has been my experience on Janna and Lulu (I am not really a supporter main though). I finally got my first S on Lulu yesterday and it was ARAM and full AP-Lulu. Appereantly "casual" sightstone-supporters, who already have a less rewarding game-experience, are also excluded from the hextech-reward system.

ABSINTHEged15 votes

I agree that sight-stone is really quite necessary, but I really hope I never find myself in a game with you.

"Ban people for not knowing how to play,"

Such salt.

Angry Monster3 votes

depending on the rank of the person, its willful trolling to not get a sight stone.

LU Vanilla Rice 11 votes

haha. No that's hilarious.

One time when I was playing, I was support, and my ashe was adc. A jinx shot her rocket at ashe, and she was gonna die, so I flashed in front to protect her and I died saving her. She then proceeded to type in all chat "Report Thresh, intentionally feeding."

TheLazySunbro9 votes

Sometimes i dont buy it when I need to hard carry trash players

Maybe he was trying to do the same :^)

SSShutTheDuckUp2 votes

Even when i have to hard carry games as a supp i always buy sightstone. Because vision is a big part of hard carrying.

Verdade4 votes

Knowledge and awareness are important, not vision. Wards are simplest way to get knowledge and awareness - monkey sees monkey does.

SSShutTheDuckUp2 votes

I cannot see your point. I do not ward for the sole purpose of warding, wards help me set up plays, decide better when to engage/disengage and so on. You are not carrying if you are 600 AP Sona and get blown in a millisecond, whenever you come close to an unwarded bush

Verdade2 votes

You don't come close to an unwarded brush if you are 600 AP Sona. Period. You don't do that even if you are actively warding. That's just dumb. It's ticket to champion haven.

It's risky enough to do with disengage support such as Janna, or tank like Alistar/Leona...

Angry Monster2 votes

So you only walk in lanes, must be hard to rotate and take optimal paths.

SSShutTheDuckUp1 votes

Or.. you know... ward?

Verdade4 votes

You don't have to ward every brush to know where enemy is. You remind me of one game i played today, when 2 enemies died (they were still on respawn timers) and 3 enemies pushed mid. My support pinged his ass of because i was "overextending" in bot lane without a ward. Like, seriously? 2 people are dead, 3 on mid. Who's gonna jump one me? Kruggs?

SSShutTheDuckUp1 votes

I have no interest in explaining you more. However I wonder - if wards are so useless why do pro players ward so much

Verdade2 votes

Because they commonly preform complex tactics like lane swaps and rotations? Not even diamond/challenger players do that... If is your vision so awesome go and ward your way to plat/dia/challenger. I'll gladly watch.

Difference between you and pros is they can use information provided by wards, you can't. Imagine it this way. One LCS team starts to use certain tactic which is highly effective. Second team exploits first teams tactic's weakness, doing something new. First team tries to counter this change, so both teams evolve. What you see on streams is final evolution of these tactics, but you can't know how or even why they do that. You can't see subtle movements, because most of the important things happen off-screen.

Most players at your level don't even know how to control a wave. How does minion aggro work, when to push, when you can't push. How to bounce wave or shove in. How to zone, how to not get zoned, how long is XP gain range... This is basic knowledge. Unless you know this, more advanced stuff like vision and enemy movement prediction will be worthless to you

redfeenix9 votes

Never force others to do anything. If they wanna play a a certain way please respect their wishes. If you wanna offer suggestions to players or hey I think we should all build mercs then please do so. But never force people to do anything if they don't wanna, esp in a video game. Let them have fun however they want ;(

DynamicQ=!LCS

I tend to avoid sighstone on supports which scale well with ap or raw stats Ex > Sona , soraka > taric

You have to understand that In lcs None has yellow trinket Past 15 minutes

While In dynamic q 9 players ll have it per match

Trinkets are enough

supports don't have to buy sightstone if they don't want to. They don't have to play any roles at all. It's not in the rules to have certain items on your champion.

dekkuu6 votes

yeah who the fuck needs vision??

LordGeovanni2 votes

who the fuk wont by vision themselves includeing the person in the role of support (which is just the name forced on the other bot laner who isnt adc)

Risk of Fate5 votes

Being a support main, I love my Sightstone and even more the upgraded thing which has done quite a bit of work. That aside, I have to ask why it's my job to try and do vision control while at the same time making sure my team isn't suiciding for that one kill? I will ward, but for the love of god the rest of you all should be too. I have placed several pinks, bought Oracle's and cleared the blues. The least you can do, Mr. Carry and Mid Laner, is buy a blue and help. Yellow trinkets are pretty bad after laning phase.

I can only keep so much vision control on the map (3 greens and 1 pink) and you're still complaining that half of the jungle isn't warded...

Paletongue5 votes

I love sightstone and buy it every game I play support. That being said...

Don't tell people what to build. It's simple. You'll make em angry and they probably won't use it anyway

Keepe5 votes

I personally build a Sight Stone item when earliest convenient. However, I can honestly say, with the attitude the OP is taking, I can probably see why you were reported over the matter. You make a post that is more or less acting as a plain insult to every person who chooses not to build a Sight Stone, which comes off as toxic in itself as you spend the entire time just insulting these people.

So, are you sure you were reported for telling the support to buy a Sight Stone, and nothing else?

I remember I had a support Lux rushing mejai going full AP. Ended her score with 0/6/3

Verdade6 votes

I remember i had support Vel'koz in my team who rushed Sorcs, Guise and Luden's. It was in plat 3 OMFG!

oh wait it was me 63% win rate on supp VK without building sightstone before 25. minute or at all.

Amelie2 votes

Had the exact same thing in a ranked game. And that player was Platinum 3!!! When does it end??

Shifune4 votes

In all honesty, you don't need a sightstone until you are out of laning phase. Keeping bot lane warded is easily doable by rotating trinket wards with your adc. The sightstone doesn't do much until you are out of laning phase where you are trying to ward enemy jg, objectives, etc. If I'm playing a tank support, I'll rush sightstone because the health is good for them. My main is Zyra though, so I trypically rush a Rylai's then I build sightstone.

I'm not a support main, but it is sad how many people think that if you don't rush a sightstone as your first item, you don't know how to play support. Yes, you should get a sightstone, but it doesn't have to be your first item.

notmebuthim3 votes

item 2049 doesnt do damage, why would anyone buy it?

TotalJerk3 votes

I actually became a support main because when I started out I couldn't trust anyone else at my level to do it.

Spuzzmocker2 votes

While i'm still on this, I feel like item 3711 is a really underrated jungle item on champs who aren't necessarily in need of the dueling potential of item 3715 or the extra CC from item 3706. I cant even remember the last time i saw it on anybody but lee sin and even that seems rare.

Would be nice to see more junglers who actually help me as a support main trying to ward. Especially keeping pinks on baron/dragon. I can only keep one pinked at a time guys.

I just wish that these topics required at least one rank-5 support champion on OPs account. The number of people who don't understand how supports work (in this case - sighstone can be delayed for FQC or boots for example) is disturbing

I'm primarily a Shaco jungle main, but I also play a fair amount of support (Nautilus and Zilean usually, both of which I have reached rank 6 with playing only support, with some Lulu on occasion). Naturally, Shaco jungle will just grab the Machete at the start of the game, but never upgrade it, since he gets more of a powerspike from Hydra. Because of this, I rarely upgrade my jungle item at all. However, if I DO happen to do exceedingly well early on and have some gold left over, I will sometimes get the Tracker's Knife and not upgrade it, just so we have a bit of extra vision when I go off counter-jungling.

When I'm playing support, Sightstone is my first purchase 90% of the time on Nautilus and about 80% of the time Zilean, but sometimes it depends on how the lane is going. If we've been attracting a lot of attention from the jungler or by a roaming mid laner (or both), I will grab a Sightstone as fast as possible so that we have enough vision to survive the lane phase. If on the other hand we aren't getting ganked much, or the lane is basically a farm fest (this is usually dependent on the behaviour of the enemy ADC and support) I will rush the completed support item and get a Sightstone second item.

Of course, there are other variables such as the nature of the enemy jungler (Warwick/Nocturne/Fiddle/Malphite/etc. who only look for ganks post-6; in this case I will upgrade the support item once, grab Boots, then rush Sightstone). How my ADC is playing also determines when I get Sightstone. If they have a tendency to hard push and don't manage the wave well, I'll get Sightstone sooner, because we're more vulnerable to potential ganks. Same thing if we're going aggro a lot and can't risk fights suddenly becoming 2v3.

I almost never play anything other than these aforementioned champions, and if I do I'm usually just screwing around for fun. I do play quite a bit of support, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't like the role. That's why it pains me so much when I see these crappy "supports" who can't understand simple concepts like how important having good vision control is to the team. It's like walking around with a blindfold on in the middle of a minefield. How anyone could think that would be a good idea is simply beyond my capacity to understand.

DontChaseBard2 votes

Rank 5 Bard. buy a goddamn sightstone. it isn't your job to build damage. they even made sightstone build into a mage item. boo hoo it gives less AP. still gives you the extra 15 damage on spells/auto attack AND it gives 10% CD just like Frost Queen's Claim. there is literally zero excuse anymore to delay, or not buy at all, a sightstone.

Chad Te Employee2 votes

Judging by your post you probably didn't say buy a sightstone. Im guessing it was more "Buy a f***ing sightstone you garbage support" So maybe he reported you for something else?

bistroh2 votes

Obviously if you just tell them to they're not going to. And just from this post I can tell you're probably toxic ingame and are telling them to buy on aggressively instead of kindly asking them. And if they don't, just move on it really isn't that hard.
