About Zed.

Can we honestly stop talking about how Zed needs a rework or nerf because I'm honestly starting to get the feeling that over 70% of people who post on the boards don't know what he does. His kit gives him one of the largest "high risk high reward" margins of any assassin.

The average person will not come close to using him to his full potential. Only by mastering the art of your shadows and skill usage will you be able to pull off amazing jaw dropping outplays like you can see Fakker and other D1 Zed mains do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbCqWMIT-Pk

In my opinion Zed has the One of The best kits for a healthy assassin. Some of you will disagree, let me point out why I think this.

Q: Extremely Narrow skill shot that can be easily missed and one of his main sources of damage/burst. W: His main outplay ability that can be easily be mis-used. If you don't spend a large amount of time mastering zed and his shadow use you will not succeed. Mastering shadow positioning, remembering where they are located in fights; especially team fights, all while hitting all of your skills on your target with your shadows. E: small AOE and slow, does mediocre damage, and mostly used for utility. R: A targeted jump to an enemy champion that deals bonus damage based on how much damage YOU do to them in that short time span.

So there is his kit in a nut shell and he's honestly the highest skill cap champions that give you a reward for his kit if you have the intellect and mechanical skill to pull it off. He has low kill potential early game on most match ups and when snowballed he can carry. For Zed to make a high reward play (Like picking someone off or killing the adc in a teamfight) he needs to get onto his enemy and do as much damage as possible which makes his play extremely risky and leaves him open to a ton of CC and damage from the opposing team. he has a very small gap closer which can be abused when making a wrong move.

Other assassins that offer less skill to use them properly include but are not limited to: Akali, Katarina, Talon. All of those champ can do very well without a lot of mechanical skill or knowledge of the champ. Zed however can not.

I felt the need to make this post discussing why Zed Shouldn't be nerfed or reworked because I've seen a good amount of threads pop up claiming he's "OP" or "no risk involved". I also need to point out to all the comment that will appear "Zed fanboy" that I am not a fanboy of zed, nor do i main him. I hope I have listed enough points and reasoning to put this "Zed is OP" discussion to rest.

Thanks to you all for reading! If you'd like to make any constructive arguments/Questions ask them in the comments. See you on the rift! :3

Yeah, I'd rather play against a Zed than an Akali and Fizz. I feel Zed can outplay you, but you can outplay him. Plus, I like how some items are used as "soft" counters to his playstyle. That allows for enemy teams to build around him.

I'm not a fan of him being mana-less, but he's not the only one. Other than that I'd say he's balanced. But manaless champs have a free pass to miss skill shots. It's pretty annoying.

Meep Man1 votes

In a trade, no absolutely not. He cannot miss.

In just poking, yes, he can afford to miss a few.

In general, always poke back when you are poked to avoid him taking advantage of this.

That's not the only problem though. Look at Syndra vs. Zed -- I honestly think on paper this matchup is in Syndra's favor, but hitting a Q with Syndra is far harder than landing Zed's Q. On top of that, Syndra is an AP champ and has to use abilities to clean up waves and has a harder time last hitting under a tower since her basic attack isn't enough to finish off minions. Zed does not have this problem on top of not having to use mana to wave clear. So when level 6 pops up, Zed has the advantage because Syndra is most likely not going to have enough mana to do her full combo and Zed only has to wait a few seconds to regain energy.

Just to be clear, this isn't about Zed -- he's fine. Really. Him being manaless is a tough setback, but not an impossible one by any means.

Not even a Zed main but an ADC main (the prey of almost all assassins) and I can say with certainty that he's balanced.

Zed is absurdly low risk for an assassin which is a huge problem. No matter what Zed does he always has a button to get out if things go wrong which is unhealthy for an assassin as he often doesn't even have to judge the situation when he wants to all in.

My main complaint about Zed is that his ult is super low risk. If he ults you, there are only two outcomes -- you die, or you don't. He has to be dumb as a box of rocks to every get himself killed during an assassination attempt. Even if your jungler lies in wait to countergank, it's hopeless.

I still think Zed is probably the healthiest assassin design in the game, and I don't think balance changes are urgent for him.

Thank you for this post. I am a Zed main and I still can't pull off half of what he has potential to do in the way of outplays. His out can be countered by every AP mid in the game (zhonyas) and ADC's are hard to assassinate due to the BT shield. He is, in no way, unfair or overpowered.

You honestly link that video and dare say he is not overpowered? Please go to 0:58 and you'll see level 10 Zed dropping a level 10 PANTHEON with 95% UNDER A TURRET. (Zed having not a single kill up to that point. So he isn't even fed.)

If a champion with stun, block and 95% health isn't save under a turret against an enemy with 0 kills who else is?

This video just states what everybody who isn't abusing him long ago admitted: Zed is broken as hell.

That Pantheon had no armor items, and Zed WAS fed in terms of CS.

I dont think Zed needs a nerf or changes (maybe SLIGHT changes. his double Q hurts a shit load when it hits you).

But, that said, saying that a champion is hard to master and shouldnt be nerfed for that isnt good game design. Why should someone be allowed to dominate everyone in a game because the champion they choose to master can do that? What about someone who doesnt WANT to learn him? Doesnt that put them at a distinct disadvantage because of the overall power said champion could have? (again, speaking hypothetically, because i dont think Zed is a problem).

-glares at zed that r'ed in on me and killed me as kat/akali/talon facetanking to clear the wave after he used qwe to clear his from under his own turret while harassing me under mine 3 seconds before-

^ my biggest complaint about zed. He needs a hit to his incredibly safe and powerful waveclear if he is to be considered a balanced assassin in my eyes. No other assassin can clear as fast, safe, repeatedly and efficiently as he can, which means that just by picking him you already have a practically guaranteed cs (and therefore item) advantage.

If Zed QWE to clear his wave, then he has less than half energy. He has literally NO kill potential with his ult unless he has near full energy.

Um....Akali has to jump into the enemy team, Talon has to jump into the enemy team....kat has to jump into the enemy team. Heck, even Fizz has to jump into the enemy team. So while I agree they don't require THAT much skill, they are all not safe. Akali shroud ez counter, so is Talon's ult. Kat's ult is ez countered. I believe that the reason Zed is considered so OP is because he can ult, run after his target, then press R again to jump back if he finds it too risky, or if he was baited. His Q hitbox is actually quite big. My thoughts are similar to him as are all assassins, they snowball REALLY well, but when behind they can actually feed. None of the assassins are safe, but Zed is the safest by far.

It's true that Zed is mechanically more difficult than most champs. However, the ability to abuse his safety as an assassin doesn't require a lot of skill. Like you said shadow placement, getting all your skillshots in all involve mechanical skill but if he messes up he just ports back out, which is why so many people have an issue with Zed. If you watch full Faker games, you'll also see how easy it is for him to back out of a fight when he either messes up or sees too much danger.

Imo, Zed doesn't need anything. He's fine as is because I still think he's an unreliable killer due to the many counters against his R and as a result, his compensation is to port back.

AbsoluteSadman2 votes

zed is probably the easiest to counter assassin in the game. any shields/heals/zhonyas/exhaust/qss i think? anyone who balance whines about zed just dosent know how to properly counterbuild him.

Meep Man2 votes

People that complain about Zed being low risk need to pay attention. When Zed uses his ultimate, it is incredibly obvious. Loud laugh, lots of dashing shadows, large red X on his target. So much is told when Zed ultimates. If your team reacts when this happens, he can't do anything.

In lane, a Zed ultimate can be easily countered with armor. If you complain about him not using mana then you shouldn't be playing a poke lane like Middle Lane. Always try and poke back when you are poked unless it means death or you won't gain any benefits.

what peeves me the most is that zed only kills one target as with all the other assassins kill more than that..luls are to had

Wouldn't say he he is the riskiest assassin, maybe the most rewarding one to master, but definitely not the riskiest pick. He is balanced imo, but people are complaining about him because they don't realize other assassins are getting nerfed which is making him better in comparison, and thus resulting in higher pick rates, because if you are gonna play an assassin, why not play one of the best ones atm?

zed needs nerfs

period.

and I'm talking about cd nerfs

I had a Zed last game, and all he did was feeding a Lissandra. No Zed champ nerfs needed, just buffed Zed players needed.

Problem with Zed: he may have a high skill ceiling, but his skill floor during laning is below Sona. Mainly due to his passive+shadows doing full damage to minions.

Honestly, if his passive didn't apply to minions it would go a long way towards toning down Zed's power without directly harming his champion fighting power. (Shadow spells doing reduced damage to minions is another option, but that feels like a jerry-rigged solution.)

I've read all of the comments and I appreciate them all. The video shows Faker (One of the top LCS players in NA,) Show off what zed can do IF You're skilled enough. Using proper shadow placement, hitting all of your abilities from you and your shadows, and knowing your damage are just the tip of the iceberg.

The only reason why Zed isn't nerfed yet is that he's one of the most popular freelo champions and people fear to drop to where they belong if they play a balanced champion.

Aspynn1 votes

But the point is that the skill floor is so low, Anyone can 100-0 with a zed, they might not be able to pull off insanely flashy plays, but zed can dive you, hit you with a quick q e and let his ult tick (and maybe ignite) do the rest. I know that zed also has an extremely high skill cap, but zed seems a bit too easy. Not saying other assassins are hard, or that zed needs a nerf, but I can see where these people are coming from.

I wish there were more constructive comments. but oh well. No matter the comment, I feel good that you all even payed attention to my post.

"High risk" Don't kid yourself. Zed has one of the safest fallback patterns in the game. There is no risk when you can waveclear as easily as he does, while still able to all-in champions, and then get away immediately from massive jump distances on shadows.

The only good thing about Zed is the fact that Zhonya's and QSS are items in this game.
