Tips for playing as Riven?

Hey guys!

I am not a great top laner. By having played a few ftp top lane champs, I found out that I can do best as a bruiser. After asking around that whether should I get Fiora or Riven, people advised to get Riven since she is easier. I have played her a lot ever since then and I have reached lvl 5. The games that I have won have only happened when we went into late game. I usually lose my lane. No matter how I play either passive like against Darius or Renekton or aggressive like against Nasus. As soon as I start to attack the enemy player, the minions start attacking me and I lose some of my hp. It becomes really hard to farm in lane as I am afraid of getting ganked or getting destroyed completely.

Please help me out guys. Being a Riven player is a kind of a meme in the community but helpful advice from the best players would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot for listening!!

Fiora is actually easier than Riven. They're both hard champions, but Riven requires so much esoteric knowledge about animation cancelling to be worth playing. If you haven't learned already, animation cancelling is the way that you get good at Riven. There are billions of guides of it on Youtube, look some up and practice.

The thing with Fiora is that if I don't get enough CS I am practically useless. However, with Riven I can squeeze out some kills due to her ult. About the youtube part, the guides on youtube tend to be by pros and it is from their perspective. I haven't found any guide that is very beginner friendly cuz I have been playing for like 7-8 months only.

Riven really isn't a beginner friendly champion. She needs animation cancelling to be effective, and animation cancelling isn't something that can be learned easily.

practice practice practice i think i saw somewhere that boxbox spends (or used to spend) like several hours a day just practicing 3rd q wall jumps and thats not even including her animation cancelling which is where her real damage comes from. Rivens a time sink to be good with I'm a terrible riven because I don't want to spend the time perfecting all the cancels and jumps but if you do can be totally worth

I dunno. I don't play her! You can look up an animation cancelling guide on youtube. You could probably search for "basic riven animation cancels" or something like that. Someone else might come in here and link you to a good one. You're going to need to practice in custom games a lot.

I personally would just not play Riven at all - as good as she is in the right hands, I think she's far too much work to do good with if you aren't going to spend thousands of hours only playing her.
