I miss the previous Aegis of the Legion

You know... item 3105 the one that had an Aura, which gave Magic Resistance

##Unique Aura – Legion: Nearby allied units gain +10 magic resistance (1100 range).

It was kind of a unique item, which gave a defensive Aura, instead of an offensive which item 3001 offers.

I certainly don't. Back when it had an MR aura you were literally trolling if you were a tank/support and didn't get it. It gave like 6k+ gold worth of stats with over 200% efficiency?

BLIGHTBRINGER2 votes

I mean you could always, make the MR Aura Bonus scale by level (similar to how Rageblade's Mixed Pen scales by level).

Using that logic, how much value in gold is a item 3001 ? I'll take the MR amplification over the offensive stat boost any day. Anything to somewhat stifle the current burst meta.

Nowhere near as much. A generic MR boost benefits your entire team while the abyssal mask will only boost magic damage dealers on your team, not to mention it is easier to be in the middle of your team than the enemy team.

The gold efficiency of the item is horrible without the aura. Aegis was gold efficient even with no aura.

An MR boost only detracts from the value of enemy magic damage dealers.

Butterwood1 votes

Exactly what I was thinking. I guess the "it's easier to be in the middle of your team than the enemy team" makes some sense, only in teamfights I'd guess any non-glasscannon is in deep enough in the action to trigger the passive anyways. I truly think it's just an offensive passive as opposed to a defensive passive.

MR is a universal stat that everybody on your team benefits from having as long as the enemy team has magic damage. Given that aegis will be built when the enemy team has 1 serious magic damage threat or multiple ones, it will always have value for everybody.

Boosting magic damage only helps your magic damage users. Building AP on an ad champion with no ap ratio has 0 value. MR has greater than 0 value.

This item was removed for a reason, it was absolutely too busted and was built in almost every single pro game due to how ridiculously gold efficient it was.

Going 4 ap with abyssal mask is still going to auto lose you the game, boosting magic damage is nowhere near as busted as a universal buff.

Marshbouy2 votes

It's also worth pointing out that most abyssal mask users buy it for themselves, not for the team. It is a lot harder to fight around a 325 range passive than a 1100 range passive.

Bârd2 votes

Yeah, but that wasn't always the case.

It used to be a 700 range aura. Still pretty small as auras go, but much better as a team item.

Marshbouy3 votes

But we aren't talking about how Abyssal was, we're talking about how abyssal is right now.

Marshbouy1 votes

Abyssal is 87% gold efficient without the aura. Aegis was a little over 100% gold efficient.

Frozen heart wasn’t built for the aura. The aura was almost irrelevant. It was built because armor actually did it’s job, unlike now.

PB4UAME1 votes

Frozen Heart has never been gold efficient or worth the purchase for anything but its passive. 80-100 armor (depending on version) some mana and a little bit of CDR that no tank or support ever needs because its on ALL of their items anyway doesn't do jack shit.

Having its old -25% AS aura decreased auto attackers DPS by, well, 25%. That's fucking massive. So, they utterly gutted it and nerfed the only useful, valuable part of the item into the gutter, and no one has touched the item since. Supposedly, the item is worth slightly more than the 2,700 it costs, but you're paying roughly 1,100 gold for 20% CDR and some mana, and are only getting roughly 2,000g of combat stats, before pen, before true damage, before magical damage, on a 2,700 gold item with a somewhat less than stellar build path.

Against a BC user, its only 1,520g worth of stats. ~56% gold efficient To a LW user, its only 1,200g worth of stats. ~44.44% gold efficient If you have BC stacks, to that LW user, its now only 912g worth of stats. ~33.78% gold efficient Against a magic damage champion, its 0g worth of combat stats.

And people wonder why its never purchased on anyone, in any situation, even against 5 AD champions.

Definitely not an item that forces itself to be mandatory on every competent support player in the game by providing 10 mr to everyone on your team just for being next to you. Start from there and work down.

ProfDrDeath2 votes

And remember, it used to provide 20 MR for everyone (pre 5.16).

And then there was S2 Aegis, which gave 12 Armor, 20 MR and 8 AD to everyone in the aura.

It was so insane how much gold this item would brought...

Abyssal mask and Aegis of the legion aren't easily comparable.

  1. Aegis was a must-have for every team because most of the time you're going to be facing at least 1 champion that deals significant AP damage.

  2. The support needed to rush aegis 9 times out of 10. Combined with point number 1 you ended up with supports rushing an aegis item every game, regardless of champion and playstyle. It wasn't very fun.

  3. Aegis had a massive range compared to abyssal. 1100 units vs 325. This requires an abyssal mask user to put themselves in a risky position while an aegis user can stand in the back line and benefit everyone.

  4. Aegis was massively gold efficient when used near allies. There aren't any good ways of fixing this. Making it scale off of level or making it less gold efficient for solo use lead to their own problems. You're either delaying it's rush by only a few in game minutes or you're screwing over supports completely.

  5. Abyssal is only usable on a handful of champions and even then it isn't a must-have item and it usually isn't a rush item.

  6. Abyssal is a legendary item, aegis was/is a component.

there's probably some other argument about how auras give allies stats that they didn't have to pay for and how that sucks, but I don't want to argue that point and I think I've said enough.

EDIT: If you're going to downvote me, at least explain your reasoning.

Butterwood1 votes

This is a good counterargument.

Nevrankroaton1 votes

I don't think people remember the older time when X item was the one thing to spam because it was just so efficient/good that not building it was basically putting your team behind.

Item with permanent aura that buff stat will ALWAYS be insane. For exemple, a simple +10 armor on everyone mean 300 gold added for each person affected. It make you give a 1500 gold advantage.

It was insane, I don't care it was a defensive item, it was properly insane.
