If you are queue of 4, the best strategy is to take all positions but top.

As long as you are not in low elo (bronze/silver) top is the safest position to place a random. Just ask them to pick someone that can build tank and still be useful and it hardly matters what they do. If you put them mid or jungle, nobody knows how they're going to coordinate ganks. If you put them bot lane, they'll be against an ADC/support duo on voice comms while you are not which is a gigantic disadvantage and unlike top laners, ADCs are useless when behind and supports explode instantly without at least some levels.

I see alot of low elo players thinking "lul we all hard carry put the random as support XD". Bad idea against a team who is almost guaranteed to have a bot lane on voice comms. You aren't doublelift if you are still in bronze/silver/gold, it is very hard to beat a halfway competent bot duo. And in this meta, feeding a MissFortune Brand lane is a great way to get 5 for 0 aced. The only risk is that top lane could feed an enemy Riven or Jax, but that's still far better than having TWO players fall behind instead of just 1.

mmm yea...You have some truth to that. Although, even if top did go tanky, if he feeds too much you just lost your front line. So even that could backfire. By the way plat is low elo as well. Unless you're D3 or higher, everything below that is low elo.

The difference in decision making between a plat 3 and a silver 4 is way bigger than between plat 3 and D3, seeing that the percent change between silver (top 50%) and plat (top 5%) is bigger than the change between plat (top 5%) and d3 (top 1%, not 0.5%).

The MMR system also supports this theory, because a D3 will only have a 91% win rate against a P3 but a P3 has a 97% win rate against a S4. Riot also supports this by balancing for plat+. They don't balance for D3+ and sure as hell don't balance for silver.

A plat, for instance, won't feed 12 kills in a row. They'll leave lane and gank rather than just keep going back to lane to feed.

several champions nerfs/buffs tell me this isn't true

That's typically where we send whoever is the random 5th, unless we don't have an ADC player then usually whoever is the random is asked if he can ADC with me.

Not sure if unhappy that I get stuck with the Randy or happy that they trust me to make any potential baddie look good.

As long as the enemy top isn't Nasus Fiora Tryndamere Riven Jax then yea. Personally we did a 5th random supp for 4man ranked, putting a zed mid with a vlad top that ended carrying rather well.
