How do I lane as Azir against Vel'koz?

I couldn't win trades. I couldn't last hit without almost dying. I couldn't land anything without taking his combo right in my face. He got an early lead and that decided the game. My jungler decided he'd gank only after Vel got to 6 and was 2 levels and 2 kills ahead of me. I looked up some things, but it says "fight in his face/ vel can't land his skills up close very easily" yet this guy, whom I can only assume he is smurfing or someone else is on his account because he has literally zero Vel'koz games in his history, destroyed me as Azir. Granted, it was my first game as Azir in pvp, but still. I couldn't put anything to use I learned from any videos or guides I looked up. I know once I use my combo, I'm a sitting duck to his cc and his combo. What the hell do i do?

vel'koz main here. best way to beat vel in lane is to obviously avoid skillshots. i recommend starting with boots and getting magic resist if you have a hard time against him. boots will help you dodge and weave through my skillshots. now in early game his abilities have about a 5 sec cooldown. so thats your window. if you are about mid range to vel'koz and he misses his E. thats your q to go in and try your best to kill him.

however, you need to be aware of hi q and w combo. as a vel player can easily cast both within seconds of another effectively proccing a passive instantly. once you've done your bit of damage head back outside his E range and continue to bait it out.

now the key to counter building vel'koz is to not just build mr. you need health. if vel is landing skillshots on you constantly most of the damage your taking is true damage not magic. so items like item 3001 are worthless. buy items like item 3116 item 3027 item 3065. as health is the best counter to true damage.

remember vel is a glass cannon. if you jump on him he will more than likely die. but if you see a vel build item 3116 and item 3285 your gonna have a hard time nailing him down cuz it will let him kit like crazy.

also never ever chase vel'koz....he is like singed with his w. he can cast it with no pause or slow in movement speed. if he moves outside of range youll just have to wait for your next chance to go in with azir.

go on youtube and watch a professional Azir. wiki his cool downs before your match. dodge skill shots, win.

You dont. Azir is hard countered by anything that flat out out-ranges him and hard counters anyone that doesn't. Thats just how he works

I think the matchup is quite easy, while you are farming W Q him, it will outrange and you can poke hard. Killing him is harder, but you can go even or get ahead from ganks.

You are not supposed to learn Azir. He's gutted.

Ok something tells me a few things at once... -- The person who said Azir was "gutted" says to not play Azir because he's not flat out overpowered anymore. I may be wrong. -- Azir is worth learning, but my new-ness with him has caused me to lose a lot of hope, really fast. -- Azir is viable, in the right hands (As is basically anyone. A champion is only as good as its controller.) -- I lose hope way too easily and solidify my own opinions in my head as gospel truth.

I will be trying to get better with Azir. Drifting is just too fun. Also holy crap his ulti does damage.

As stupid and probably useless as this sounds; you dodge shit. Unfortunately Azir struggles against long range channel-nukes, vel koz and MF come to mind. I'm not exactly comfortable picking Azir into Vel koz, but I could probably do it, but I never pick Azir into a team that has either MF or Malphite, they simply bone you too hard by simply pressing R.

Anyway, there's no real "magic strat" to beat vel koz in lane as Azir, you just have to dodge, and if you're lucky, he'll get complacent and stand too close to tower range, in which case you can Shuriman Shuffle him under it for an easy kill.

You can't win lane against a good VelKoz unless you play some shit like Fizz or Leblanc. Velkoz is probably the perfect mage in terms of damage, safety, range and utility. He has it all.

Rush boots and movement speed items, go for some MR. Don't fight him unless he very stupidly wasted his combo.

Vel is annoying but pretty easy to lane against, generally you want to use the minion wave to block his qs, never stay in one play for too long, and always back off to let his passive stacks fall off Edit: also if he misses e, hes vulnerable to being attacked as its his only hard cc ability

Don't pick such a horribly gutted champion.

Press W, press Q, right click on Vel'koz, this should chunk him pretty hard, rinse repeat. Avoid his skillshots, which are pretty telegraphed and fair to dodge, and make sure you're at above 50% hp when he hits 6.
