I truly don't understand what was wrong with runes/keystones to begin with

I don't think they were OP at all. I don't think they even needed to be changed. I think they allowed people to be prepared to fight against certain comps and decide what works best with their champion. All this new stuff is just more snowbally when the game is already snowbally as it is. Why is it that people can bring up justified complaints about certain champions cough cough Twitch cough cough and they're ignored for months on end by Riot? Or that most people can agree that we DON'T want a more snowbally game and yet that's exactly what's happening here. I don't know, maybe I'm the only one who feels this way.

Honestly, the problem wasn't that the rune system, or even the pre-keystone masteries had anything particularly wrong with them.

Riot had just let the stuff which had proven itself to be insanely more efficient than the others stay at it's blatant power advantage. The systems didn't have anything wrong with them, riot just abandoned them years ago. Bar the actual keystones of the mastery pages.

If it's any consolation, twitch is only slightly stronger compared to the now massive steroid that Tristana gets with her new attkspeed rune and E.

i mean, twitch STILL IS terrible to deal with and after stomping him 6-0 and 2 towers by 10 mins he could still ace my other teammates, but at least we won because roCKET MIDGET IS OP LULULUL
