What is the point of having extended damage when everyone else can burst you down? Am I suppose to skirmish them down? Why doesn't he have resistance or sustain? In anyone's opinion, who is the ideal support for Kog? surely Someone that heals? I would like to know some strategies on how to play Kog from some people in the know. Help a brother out before I have to put this beautiful creature to the side.
To rather belatedly answer your question, OP, Kog works well with Janna (peel and shields, convince her to get Ardent) and with Braum (procs his passive VERY fast, then go to town). In terms of build, Rageblade should be your first item. Depending on the matchup you can lead with Pickaxe to farm under your tower more easily or Blasting Wand to give your Q and E a bit more bite.
Once Rageblade is done, try to avoid trading or duels unless you have Rageblade stacked. When Kog has Rageblade charged jumping on him is suicide for a large selection of the cast. Only pop his W when you know that you can commit to a fight. If your opponent can bait it out and then back off, you'll be helpless for a while.
I would advise against Hurricane, Rageblade affords you plenty of pushing power and Crit is largely wasted on Kog since he doesn't invest in Infinity Edge. Full build you're looking at something like
. With IAS runes you should be approaching 4.0 attack speed when Rageblade is capped which, frankly, is plenty. You'll be able to take hits decently, which will afford even the least coordinated of teams plenty of time to peel for you in the inevitable event that you're pounced on.
Kog has the second strongest global taunt in the game, with only Teemo ahead of him. People will dive you without looking at your items. And then they'll die, because you'll be able to survive a full rotation from most of the cast. Only use your Q when you know you can tag someone with it. It makes a HUGE difference, trust me. Never use your Ult to poke unless you're just trying to get vision on someone. Save it for targets that are below half HP. When you're wailing on things with your W, keep track of how fast their HP is dropping and lob an Ult so that it lands about the time they hit 25% HP for an insta-gib.
Don't go anywhere without vision.
Don't go anywhere alone.
Don't go anywhere without vision, seriously.
And for your questions about Kog's state of balance?
Well...
Riot was expecting Kog to be crazy-strong when he went live.
Instead he ended up with a sub-40% win rate and had to be hot-fix buffed. Expect more buffs in the near future when it becomes clear that he's totally underwhelming at the LCS level, too. Kog isn't terrible right now, but he is sub-par compared to most other ADC picks. Do not pick him into Graves. Do not pick him into Ezreal. He does decently against Vayne and MF, though.
