Sona is super strong RN

since the item 3116 rework has made building it on Sona feasible... i haven't had a bad game.

maybe the latest meta shift has something to do with it too?

I hear the meta is starting to shift toward more poking (since tanks have been toned down, all-in's natural counter is rising). But be careful, you know what poke comps are countered by... the rise of all-in and dive comps are going to return.

But right now Sona is doing alright.

Just out of curiosity, what is your standard Support Sona build?

i actually build support sona and carry sona the same ATM. i used to go tanky with support sona and rush sheen on carry. spellthief is surprisingly stong for sona in laning, especially with my full utility setup. i found that out on accident because of a champ select mixup where i had bought it thinking i was sup.

i go max cdr in runes/masteries. 4/0/28 for 10% flat (among other early game perks) and scaling runes adding up to 40% total at lvl 18. after spellthief i get liche bane and sorc boots (sorc boots being one of the reasons i go max CDR runes) then i usually get tear, rylias, and aclarity next. death cap/void staff depending on the game and i top it off with ludens if the game lasts that long. i lose sometimes but i havnt gone negative since the rylias rework that lead to me adding it to the build. the kiting/chasing is just too insane.

sona without boots of mobility is pretty garbage just saying

i used to build either (sometimes both). i dont think its necessary now. if you see the enemy is going to be slowing you down there is a mastery and/or a potion for that. honestly i rarely see a situation now where i can even be damaged without a good flank or me being super agro.

but ya... mobis are.... ew... i run tele ever since they were nerfed... i hate feeling like a turtle suddenly when im in combat.

Sona can't really afford to get tear since it delays champion powerspikes.

Also sorcs isn't that important as much as Mobis is; even on AP Sona.

I go scaling runes/masteries too though.

sometimes i never build tear. its very situational. i build it when im so far ahead that i have an extra 720 after i buy my powerspike item on my B (or sometimes i have and extra 400, then an extra 320 next time)its godlike if you are ahead because it means you can be out on the map 24/7 and snowball into oblivion.

Sona has always been super strong, borderline toxic, for a long time.

Free (non-skillshot) damage on a low cooldown with relatively low "interaction" in lane. If built with a fair amount of AP/Lichbane can easily outtrade a squishy if played with any semblance of intelligence.

If you can't win a lane as Sona support then you likely have

  1. an AFK ADC

  2. You're Bronze against a Diamond bot lane and even then it's 50/50.

  3. A learning disability.

You literally have no chance to miss automatic damage---and free bonus damage from your power chord. I've never seen a Sona lose a lane, ever other than in the above scenarios.

Actually if you Just Q them it does like, no damage, you need to auto them to get the real damage, which is a bit riskier then you'd think. Also learning to get the combination on your abilities to get the desired passive buff on your auto is a bit of a mini game.

i think you both have valid, but exaggerated points. the actual skill floor for sona is pretty low. you can do OK with her with no skill... do GOOD with her if you have basic sills like using E to dodge and combining your AA really fast after a q before they see it coming....

but ya there is actually a ton of thought and preparation that actually goes into playing sona at her highest potential.

Sona is one of the most interactive supports in the game. Her whole point is consistently using low damage poke to whittle you out of lane and to get the most of her damage she needs to get into AA range. She has probably the most active laning phase of every support because she is constantly going in for trades, at a range that generally allows you to trade back.

I don't see anything non-interactive about her unless she's having to stay back consistently healing, which will only ever happen if she has interacted very badly with the enemy.

Sona's been very strong for a while now actually. Ever since the community whined to revert the nerfs to her Base HP, she can survive all-ins like Leona early game and can safely heal away any damage done. Furthermore you can go far with her by building straight damage. Anyone who thinks that she's a lesser soraka or Janna or whatever is kidding themselves.

Janna ≥ Soraka > Sona; especially in the current meta. If it were to move away into Sona's favor, /then/ you'd have more reason to pick her than Janna.

Champions like Leona/Blitz/Alistar/Naut are Sona's biggest counter; you can dodge every hook and be fine, but the second you get hooked you either burn a flash or you die. Trying to heal the damage back up will only make you go oom.

She's not weak, but she's not on par with the top supports by any means.

maikokk1 votes

if you are referring to her ability to support, she is actually pretty bad. the only reason she works as a support is zoning. her heal/shield is shit early game... hardly relevant (compared to other support utility setups) till you have alot of AP

O Fallen Scholar1 votes

I hate her poke. It's so damn high early game. For poke to be that high dmg it deserves to be skillshot.

maikokk1 votes

it wouldn't be that bad if her q range matched her AA range.
