Not even toxic, it's a whole new level of wrong. (Abusing Report Feature)

To start, just note that I am trying to the best of my ability NOT TO RANT here, but I need to post just to let off some steam while at the same time point out that what you all call "Toxic" is turning into "Bullying" and a lot of people have a hard time deciding who is the bully and who is the victim. If you have productive thoughts or comments they are appreciated but otherwise just please don't post in response if you're gonna be negative. We don't need more of it. " I " don't need more of it...

The game as many of you know can be pretty competitive and thus people get angry or upset. Sometimes they troll each other and other times verbally harass their teammates. This is a givin any more in league. I understand that. I've learned to deal with it and have grown to accept it. This will never change.... but NOW I face a new problem. Groups of people (duo queue / triple queue) Going around and bullying. Sometimes this can become extreme.

A personal example of this is in my recent 2 games. (I'm not the only one, just giving MY example.) I just recently started playing as Ahri. I normaly adc, so playing a caster mid is a whole new thing to me. Got tired of bots and decided to play pvp. Naturally I sucked harder than the void in space. I observed what I was doing wrong and tried to adjust accordingly. Still played wrong. I'm trying my best to play this character and learn as I go. NOT ONCE though did any of my teammates in ANY of my games give advice on how to improve (Teamwork or lack thereof op)..... let alone help me in lane. There was no teamwork at all as far as I saw it. I didn't mind. I'm pretty much used to lack of teamwork/ support/ community in a game that is heavily based on teamwork/ support/ community...

I knew I played bad and needed to improve. I also knew that the team as a whole did not cooperate with one another. Rather they decided to talk s^# to each other. Since I played the worst, I ended up the biggest target. The typical league nonsense that we all love and enjoy on a daily f^# basis. Now see, MY problem isn't with the fact that I get verbally abused during a game if I play bad. MY problem..... is when these duo/triple queue groups ALL report me for what THEY are doing to ME. THEY Verbally abuse, THEY were the ones getting all angry in chat and calling me s***. Which leads to the other problem....

These duo/triple queue players then manage to convince the other team to report me as well...... I mean, why not? It's 2 or 3 of them (no doubt friends with each other) vs 1 lil old me. Naturally the other team sides with the majority and against the one person who played the worst, not even knowing what truly happened. This is not toxic behavior, this is out right BULLYING!!! (from the duo/triple queue)

It's absolutely pathetic that TWICE in a row, just today alone, I got a message at the end game screen saying I was reported for Verbal Harassment and it will be sent to the Tribunal... and all I did was play incorrectly. I was the victim of THEIR verbal abuse.... and NOW I'm getting spam reports against me just because a group of friends were that butthurt OVER A GAME!!!! Ranked I can maybe understand... but in normals?!?! Really people?!?!? Common with that.

My other problem is that the Tribunal system just doesn't work. I don't have faith in it. There ARE players out there who deserve bans and don't get them. There ARE players out there who DONT deserve to be banned and still get a punishment anyways. While I DO have faith that the Tribunal will have proof that I was the victim in said games, I DON'T have faith that players will vote on my issues accordingly because most of said players are just after the ip bonuses attached to voting in the tribunal. I have actually been banned b4 through the tribunal...... and DID NOTHING WRONG except play badly. The tribunal is ment to correct negative behavior..... it IS NOT a tool to correct out right bad play. There is a difference, and a lot of people are abusing the report feature to the max, and the Tribunal is really just here because SO MANY reports come in the Riot staff cant cover it all.

Riot, there is a reason Reports spam you guys, and there is a reason over half of the reports aught to be ignored... you guys (Riot) just implemented the Tribunal as a lazy way of "dealing" with the problem instead of actually addressing it head on. The report system is heavily abused and you (Riot) need to start looking into ways to fix it, instead of relying on this lazy Tribunal method of yours, because that's the same as asking a bunch of kids in real life to run a real courtroom/ jury. It's absolutely foolish.

I like this game, I really do, and I understand people treat it uber seriously... but these duo/ triple queue groups are the real source of a lot of the toxic behavior in league... because then the single individual that got bullied takes on that frustration to the next game and spreads it.

I thank those of you who actually took time out of your life to read this wall of text in its entirety, because this is what people probably SHOULD do. It's not a "QQ Thread" like some people like to call it. It's my way of venting without taking it into another game, while at the same time expressing thoughts to the community and maybe even getting to know some people who don't want to be total wank jobs over it. This is the internet, we need to communicate with one another right? It benefits everyone if we would all take a chill pill, take some time to reflect, maybe post to your fellow players (the community) to help ease the stress of things. Bashing on players in-game and then bashing on them further on the forums does NO ONE any good. To those of you who think it's funny, you're the reason the game and community here get a bad rep. I want this to be an "enjoyable" game while still maintaining that competitiveness we all crave. Thanks again to those who sacrificed their time of day to hear this out. (Really to read the text, but you get the idea.)

So worst STORY NA? Yes

Tribunal is down, so yes it does not currently work. Riot has said this for months. It is in a REBUILD.

When learning a new champ go try team builder. Its designed to take into account champs and roles that you have not played in that lobby. Though you are bronze 4 so it can not lower to much more.

I went to you rune pages. They are a mess need to be redone. Here is some help

Never use yellows for AP Never use blus for AD Reds when an AP champs should be pen 95% of the time Reds for ad champs should either be flat AD or AS. Most scaling runes are TRAPS. Scaling AP quints are bad. Quints for AD champs should be AD or AS (there are complex reasons and synergies that decided some of this stuff)

You may of noticed i pretty much tore apart every one of your rune pages. Build rune pages for the early game and try to steam roll off early advantages.

Skias6 votes

Team builder is just as bad. If you feed, you get reported. Its really useless.

Angry Monster2 votes

The point was that it lowers your expected skill level to compensate that you are doing something new. You more likely to be with people new on their champs also.

Though when i play with people in team builder, i expect a standard of game knowledge like what to do when behind in lane, warding ect. Its not always being good with a champ as much know what to do in general.

Admitting that you make mistakes also helps, Staying silent is the worse thing, makes people think you do not care. Saying Mb or i having problems goes along way. Its about owning up so people know that you are not fucking around.

Killer X 121 votes

Well this is not actually true. I recently played thresh support for the first time, there were 4 diamonds in my game. The next 3 games i played all had at least 2 diamond players, the rest plats or high gold. I'm unranked, and those are the type of rankings i see when i'm playing adc (my main role)...that isn't right. "Oh they must be playing new champs too." Their lolking that says PLAYER1 has 204 zed games and PLAYER2 has 390 syndra games disagrees lol. The game i litterally just played was with a diamond mid azir and a gold top kennen. They argued the entire game over how both of them were bad and their calls were trash and blah blah blah blah blah.

I'd advise to play blinds and give everyone a chance, but mute em as soon as they start their bs.

Rock Rockburgh2 votes

Those 204 Zed games probably aren't Teambuilder-- the system doesn't pay any attention to games played outside it, because it can't detect what role you were in.

ScurvyNave5 votes

Teambuilder's matchmaking is shit right now to be honest I'd advise against it. I've played Viktor all of twice this past week and I got thrust into a game against golds and even a Platinum player. Whats with that?

My advice would be to practice at the highest bot difficulty before entering team builder and pray that riot matchmaking gods have mercy.

Rock Rockburgh3 votes

TB matchmaking IS crap at the moment. I played against a team that had a platinum player and a level 5 on it.

To compare, my team was a silver, three unranked 30s, and me at 23. Natch, we got stomped by the plat Fiddles.

Narasimha2 votes

Its because the ranked season is over. With little interest in ranked, and the new map in Teambuilder, all the higher ranks are actually doing it for the first time, so it still has to adjust their mmr for that mode.

Read most of your wall-o-text.

  1. Tribunal is down for maintenance and upgrades right now and has been for months. Riot staff is handling reports and bans right now.

  2. Multiple reports against a player in the same match have ALWAYS been disregarded, to avoid problems with premades ganging up on other players.

  3. Riot has a report weighting system where if you keep reporting players who turn out to be innocent, the reporting system does not give your reports as much credit in the future. In extreme cases a player's reports can be ignored entirely, and Riot has also banned players in the past for abusing the report system.

  4. When it was up, Tribunal had very few false punishes. Riot tuned it to run lenient -- getting punished required significantly more than 50% of voters to hit punish, and it wasn't easy to end up there in the first place. The bigger problem, actually, was that it was slow. It could take dozens of games with bad behavior to get someone banned, maybe more.

wait so if everybody reports someone for botting in a game it gets ignored because we are ganging up on the scripter? o_o

OhBoyItsaMegaman2 votes

He means that the system only cares how many games you were reported in, not how many people reported you in each game. If all 9 people report you, it's the same as 1 report. However, things you did during the game or things that you said can put you on the fast track to getting a ban.

It is also worth pointing out that it has been about 3 years since the Tribunal gave IP rewards, so OP is sorely mistaken on that point as well.

Rawrful1 votes

Any evidence of that? 'Cause back when I was doing Tribunal, part of the evidence system was how many people reported the person in each of their reported games.

Matthias91191 votes

It doesn't throw the reports away. But in terms of deciding whether to build a Tribunal case, the raw number of reports is not considered. Getting reported by multiple players in one game doesn't count more than being reported by a single player in one game.

Riot rates players on what they call "report density", which is: <number of games where the player received one or more reports> / <number of games played>.

I stopped here, I'll read the rest after, but I can just say that if you did nothing wrong, as you claim, you have nothing to worry about. Report those who were verbally abusing you and move on.

EDIT:

Tribunal had a 90% ban rate, which is reasonable considering that 90% of the people in the Tribunal deserve a ban or punishment. Besides it took more than one go through the Tibunal to get banned. Banning was the last punishment after 2 "# day bans".

Now on to the points I highlighted:

Bold: Lol. There is no ip rewards anymore. This has been stated many times for years. The fact that you still think there is means that you've never actually used the Tribunal so you don't even know how the system works (thus don't trust it) and have to come up with some reason that people use a system that helps make the game better.

Italics: If this is true you could have sent in a support ticket and got unbanned. BUT you only seem to think you can get banned for verbal abuse. If people reported you for intentionally feeding, and there was enough evidence for the Tribunal voters to believe it then you would get punished.

If you were banned you went through the Tribunal a few times and got a punish each time. If it was an incorrect ban you should have brought it up to Riot support. Though I have reason to believe that you were a little more negative than you are letting on just by your post. arrogance and ignorance.

Riot, there is a reason Reports spam you guys... (Cut down to make room because of type restrictions.)

You have no idea how the system works.

Besides the Tribunal is currently down and Riot is handling the reports while fixing an already highly accurate system.

Abuse of the system doesn't really work. But again, people like to blame other people instead of looking at how THEY can improve themselves.

Also I don't get why people think only kids used the Tribunal. First they don't get anything out of it, there goes ~80% of the kids. Second. kids don't care about sitting looking at reports, or spamming punish, they want to play a game. But again, people like to come up with reasons as to why it isn't THEIR fault they were banned, it had to be "kids".

The majority of players who used the Tribunal were those who care about the game and want to have a more positive experience. Does this mean there were no kids or punish-spamers? No. But they were few compared to those who actually looked at the reports.

I agree with you. I think that Riot needs to maybe lessen it's focus on new champions and new gameplay, and start focusing on the absolutely terrible community. I can understand, yes it is a competitive game, but it's a competitive GAME. It's a video game for Christ's sake. The things people say to each other on League is absolutely revolting, and far below the line of common human decency. The abuse that players suffer just from not doing well is terrible.

I personally love this game, and I would love to see an actual team based community instead of a childish mentality of superiority because the person who's doing the abusing happened to not be having a bad day (which everyone has!) I can't say that I'm not guilty of being toxic, but never to the point of harassment and it's usually just in retaliation to another toxic/abusive player.

I prefer ranked play over normals, just because it's more competitive and more focused on winning, but with that comes increased toxicity. Obviously it gets worse in ranked just because it's more competitive.

Riot should actually take the tribunal cases themselves and focus on more strict punishments for people. I can understand having a bad day and being toxic and flaming at your team, but when it gets to the point of Verbal abuse, which just happens to be a legal offense as well as an in-game reportable offense, It makes me want to quit altogether. IP-bans are completely possible, and I think they should be implemented to the more extreme cases, and instead of small chat restrictions for harassing, they should get their account suspended or banned.

League of Legends is known for it's horrid community, and I can completely tell why. It really needs to be addressed by riot directly.

Jenova Synthesis4 votes

Riot should have moles, people who aren't announced as working with riot but who have the power to punish players. They should play random normals and ranked matches on a regular basis and any abusive player they come across, they punish properly. That would help this issue a lot.

boy I would love to have this job.. unfortunately this is impractical giving it would take hundreds of thousands of people doing this to have a good effect

Jenova Synthesis1 votes

Not necessarily. If Riot put, say 5 moles on each server, and every day one mole played 5-10 games, that would mean each mole would probably find somewhere between 2 and 20 toxic people every day (including both the moles team's and the enemy team's players). Not only would that me removing that 2 to 20 toxic players a day, but it would also discourage everybody from being toxic because there is no way of knowing if you're playing with a mole.

It's like crime in a local city. If all the sudden a city announced that they're going to double the amount of undercover cops throughout that entire city, the crime rates would drop (or the criminals would get smarter at getting away with crime).

Frankly, I would love to work in a position like that as well, even if I wasn't paid (or was paid little). I play at least 3 matches every day, so it wouldn't be taking time away from my regular life and I'd enjoy being able to help out.

Riot already has moles in the form of people with high report weight. The best part about this is that no one knows their own report weight, so everyone remains unbiased,

Glad you say the tribunal is failing when you know so little about it. Players haven't gotten IP from the tribunal in many months, and right now the tribunal is down, only Rioters deal with reports, not players.

DexterousGecko5 votes

you're assuming that just being reported equals being banned. It's just not like that. Riot will look at the reports and see that you said nothing at all in retaliation to the toxicity thrown on you and you'll be fine. Of course, if you started raging back to the trolls, then you might have a problem.

Sightless664 votes

Riot, there is a reason Reports spam you guys, and there is a reason over half of the reports aught to be ignored.

Good news! A ton of reports are ignored. One of the key features of reports is that their value adjusts based on the reputation of the reporter. If someone is reporting a lot of people that no one else reports and that doesn't show any signs of being toxic (signs determined by the community tribunal decisions I might add), then their reports get devalued to nothing pretty quickly. RIot has actually banned people who overreport in the past.

Also, when the tribunal went down, there were no ip bonuses attached to it. They took those out a very long time ago.

Just keep in mind, Riot is aware that people report for bad reasons, and there are safeguards in place against it. You say that you've been banned unjustly before, but I have two responses to that. First, the tribunal isn't up anymore, so being anxious about that isn't necessary. Second, I'm not certain I'm getting the whole story there, just your take. There are some false reports that get punished, but it does not seem to be very many. If that was the case though, that sucks.

[1] Riot uses a report weighting system to filter out false and malicious reports. It is used with all the behavioral systems (chat restrictions, manual reviews, etc.). This means that people are simply wasting their time if they spam report.

[2] The real-time warnings that you saw are triggered by a pattern of behavior, not just a single game. They also use the same weighting system I mentioned in the first bullet point. This means that you should probably not dismiss them as being nothing more than the result of false reports. That said, they're intended to help you check yourself when you're having a bad day. Take a break and remember that mute, report and move on is almost always the best way to deal with harassment.

[3] The weighting system also takes into account the fact that friends can gang up on someone. We don't know 100% of the details, but reds have explained that "one report counts the same as nine" for the purpose of triggering a review.

[4] As other people have mentioned, the Tribunal is currently down while they work on improvements. Unless and until you get a chat restriction, you shouldn't worry too much. Accept the warnings for what they are: warnings.

Aithos3 votes

Tribunal is a broken system, players who are largely immature don't deserve to have the ability to police themselves. I looked at tribunal once and what I saw in virtually al of the cases - the teammates were as toxic or worse than the person being judged, but there was no option to punish them. So because they were abusing someone and that person snapped and said something back and got reported by the duo queue they deserve to be banned? Lol, ok.

Reporting should be through the support system only, only for the most severe offenses and should be reviewed by Riot and people misusing the system should be punished severely.

DrCyanide2 votes

Take some comfort: people that falsely report others have their "report credibility" destroyed. After a while, the system completely ignores them. If people are doing this sort of thing regularly, then they're not going to be getting you or me any closer to being banned.

As for new roles and champions, I like to cover my bases and tell the team in champion selection when I'm doing something different. Most of the time the response I get is "whatever, that's why we're playing normals", but if something happens in game I can say "I warned you I was new at this".

I skimmed most of the post, so sorry if there's some detail about your horror I skipped. Hopefully this helps a little though.

DOn't worry about the reports, they carry 0 weight. And if a Rioter ever reviews your logs he will see that you did nothing wrong.

Also, I'd be hesitant to call an anonymous person "abusing" a video game feature against you bullying.

...but when it gets to the point of Verbal abuse, which just happens to be a legal offense as well as an in-game reportable offense...

um...what? Trash talking in a video game is not illegal. If they are throwing death threats around, saying that they are gonna come to your house and murder you then that would be illegal. But saying "you suck m8 uninstall" is not illegal, just against Riot's policy.

What is illegal varies by jurisdiction. In my experience, 'Verbal abuse' in-game commonly dances pretty close to the criminal-in-some-jurisdictions categories of 'hate speech', 'advocating suicide', and other actually-criminal (in some jurisdictions) speech.

Dreddeth2 votes

Don't worry too much about it. Riot reviews stuff like chat logs and other evidence before they ban. If anything, your reporters may find themselves banned for wrongful and/or frivolous use of the report function.

OblongOtter2 votes

Two things. First off:

Lyte! We call upon thee! Come, tell us the full story, defend the innocent if need be, and smite any offenders!

Second, I really miss being a part of the tribunal. I never knew there were even IP boosts, I just am really justice oriented and loved being able to help remove those who are cancerous for the game, while defending the innocent and wrongly accused. I'm one of those people who would be somewhat excited for jury duty, just on the basis of upholding justice.

Third, this is really awful, but fortunately, reports have weight based on how often you report, and how often your reports are correct. If they constantly report people who DON'T get banned, their reports aren't meaningful in the system. However yeah getting others to report you just because is pretty rude, and they deserve to be suspended.

Anomander2 votes

If you are not toxic you will not get enough reports to get banned. If you are toxic you will. It really is that simple. And if for some reason your not toxic but do get reported enough it is why each is reviewed.

This is a problem with matchmaking - if you are trying something new there should be a queue for "FUN TIMES FRIENDS" and not just "NORMAL" and you definitely shouldn't be trying anything new in ranked without expecting trash talk. If the solo queue matchmaking system was setup to put people of the same skill (and used games played in the algorithm properly) without trying to push people to a 50% winrate all the time there would be less frustration as well.

For instance - say you queue'd normal for fun times and don't have a great winrate the past 10 games... then you get matched with some 3-4 player group who are expected to carry you(you are their handicap to try and even out the odds of a premade in the normal queue... the bad matchmaking system at work).. they are going to be frustrated when this happens frequently.

Also, it's a game on the internet - get some thick skin.

Reports don't get you in trouble. Your behavior in game does. If you get a few reports but your KDR isn't horrible and your chat logs are clean, you have nothing to worry about. If people are trashing you, mute them, and report them after the game for harassment or whatever. Stay positive! It's easy to focus only on the toxic players, and miss all the rest who are actually pretty decent. Be friendly and complimentary in champ select and in game, and you'll find that many people respond in kind and your overall experience will be better.

Over-reporting is monitored by Riot and the Tribunal itself. It's unfortunate that you are being abusively reported, but know that the offenders will be noted.

you guys (Riot) just implemented the Tribunal as a lazy way of "dealing" with the problem instead of actually addressing it head on. The report system is heavily abused and you (Riot) need to start looking into ways to fix it, instead of relying on this lazy Tribunal method of yours, because that's the same as asking a bunch of kids in real life to run a real courtroom/ jury.

Tribunal is actually a very progressive method for handling player issues. Riot works with the Tribunal, the Tribunal doles out appropriate punishments. For the scale of the player base, it is as necessary as it is helpful (when in session).

Pleas are not heard by riot.

I know of people still TRYING to win DRAFT games because they " DON'T Communicate " in game they 100% ping because like me, I can't keep quite. 161 IQ and no ability to understand slow, or stupid people.

" Just over extended, died, TP'd and did the EXACT same thing. " not once, twice, but almost all game every other game.

So, if I remembered to mute you, and just ping I am liable for being TOXIC, I am also at risk for playing a game, and saying GGWP, because GGWP is TOXIC too... Its a MOOD dependant system. and DEFINES 1935's style of work ethic. just pathetic.

Been ranting to try and save this game for over 3 years now... they don't listen

No, I attempted to go into a bot game and got kicked, and when I tried to log in I was banned.

Then next day I logged in and got kicked, just like I said bro.
