Atleast his W used to show metal. Now it's just blobs of shadows

Utilizing cold steel to bestow the gift of eternal suffering upon my enemies while shredding their very essence with storms of metal shards orbiting me to make their puny efforts to harm me be in vain.

So much wasted potential, it hurts...

The "metal" here is also referring to the music genre, and not just about a hunk of material.

It's a play on words.

But I agree the new Morde is badly designed.

he has 0 spell interaction with music.

All of his spells are named after/references of famous heavy metal songs, including his passive.

And ofc, their functions are derived from the those song titles/content.

That's why he's the master of metal, because he literally is Riot's illustration and personification of heavy metal genre.

if it's only this then it's disappointing. but well, harvest of what ever is also a name of metal songs?

This is quoted from LoLWIki:

Every one of Mordekaiser's abilities is in reference to a heavy metal song:

  • Children of the Grave / Iron Man are both songs by Black Sabbath.
  • The buff to the prisoner from Children of the Grave is called The Prisoner, an Iron Maiden song.
  • Mace of Spades refers to the song Ace of Spades, by Motörhead from the eponymous album, Ace of Spades.
  • Mace of Spades is translated to "Morgenstern" in the German and French versions of the game. "Morgenstern" is in German the name of the weapon he uses. Morgenstern is also a song by Rammstein. Translated back to English, Morgenstern means "morning star", a category of spiked, medieval mace-like weapons.
  • Siphon of Destruction refers to the song Symphony of Destruction, by Megadeth.
  • Creeping Death is a song by Metallica from the album Ride the Lightning.
  • Creeping Death is translated to "Metallische Luft" in the German version of the game, which translates back to Metallic Air, also a reference to Metallica.
  • Children of the Grave's passive, "Dragon Force," is a reference to the British power metal band of the same name.
  • Harvester of Sorrow is a song by Metallica.

While his kit is a bunch of references to that genre of music he was also supposedly able to control metal and none of his abilities really have anything to do with metal music aside from their names. Actual metal should probably feature in his abilities to some extent more than just hitting you with a metal mace.

that's why they changed his name

Baron of Bread1 votes

Yes, but they wouldn't have gotten to that if they left metal in his visuals.

To be fair, he wasn't exactly the 'master of metal' before, either.

yes, you're totally right but certainlyT and riot themselves forgot what mordekaiser was

he had no identity and they didn't think about giving him one. all they thought was "we want mordekaiser to be picked as an AD carry botlane"

Baron of Bread1 votes

Pretty sure Mordekaiser had an identity. Feel free to look at some of the Malicious Metal (and others) threads that are on the boards for more information on that.

Siphon hit with conjured metal maces. Creeping death was a swirling swarm of metal shards. Wtf you talking about

Katarina's Q throws metal knives. Her ult is a storm of metal. 'Abilities use metal' is not the same as 'abilities based around metal'.

Matezoide3 votes

His passive's icon was a picture of his armor.

Q's AoE sent shards of metal into nearby enemies

W summoned metal shards

E conjured metal maces to his enemies.

MisterHealYoGirl1 votes

I realize that visually, a lot of his abilities have metal in them, but you could say the same of a lot of other champions; Katarina, Sivir, etc. What I was trying to say is that none of his abilities were THEMATICALLY about metal; what if his ult damage scaled with his target's armor, or he could steal attack damage? That would be a champion that I would term the Master of Metal.

Matezoide1 votes

Fair point, but lets be honest, that applies to many champions.

MisterHealYoGirl1 votes

Exactly.

And I'm being dead serious. Mordekaiser was never the first one into my head. It's more like his title is just for show, really. None of his abilities ever really were metal themed. Other than the obvious 'metal song name reference', anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it down the road.

The original morde was designed at a time where the developers were just having fun. they didn't really have a design goal back then about how the game should be played, and they were just having fun with it. the master of metal was a pun off the metal genre his skills were named after metal songs. The old Morde no longer has a place in league as the master of metal. and riot admits that the old morde was a badly designed champion.

When i was up against morde i didn't think of him as the master of metal. I thought of him as the guy who could do alot of melee damage and can steal my soul. They expanded on that Mordenkaiser.

I think Mordenkaiser has a place in league as "The Paladin of Pain." BTW this would be an awesome title change.

Matezoide1 votes

Source for Riot stating Mordekaiser was a bad design?

No, CertainlyT doesnt count, since the entire team for Mord's rework disagreed with his idea that Mord is toxic as a solo laner.

Matezoide2 votes

Someone with metal effects in his kit/icons, for starters,

Sure, old Mord always had the soul manipulation aspect of his kit, but every single one of his regular spells were clearly metal-based in some way, even his Passive. You actually felt like you were using METAL to kill your foes before taking their souls.

Then his VFX got changed into the generic spooky-green that almost every other Shadow Isles champion has.

To be honest, Master of Metal makes me think of a tank. Then again, he could become a very meaty Ap bruiser similar to Cho'Gath.

Seeing as Mordekaiser is also known as the Paladin of Pain(which is a nickname i love), if he was reworked into a tank who would outsubstain his enemies by draining them to the last bits, i would play the crap out of him.

Hey, what if his ult was only a summon? Like, he'd have his own mini champion he could summon. No lifesteal, no damage: just a minion that stabs people. Maybe the damage could heal Mordekaiser. I dunno, just an idea.

Imagine if he was extremely tanky and his ult would summon a spear warrior: you'd basically be Smough and Orsntein.

Of course, i'm just rambling nonsense.

Master of Metal... A giant suit of walking armour... And you're annoyed that he has power in his AA's? If there's someone swinging a giant mace around, I'm going to assume that it hurts.

If anything, he's poorly named now. All of his abilities imply more affiliation with stealing souls / life and generic power, then metal. I wouldn't be surprised if he got something in way of a lore update for the Harrowing, implying that the suit of armour itself is cursed, and "Mordekasier" is just another soul it's trapped.
