Why are people so against support?

Nearly every time I'm in a game our support requests a role trade, why are people so against Support?

Won't speak for everyone but as for myself I have been a support main since S2, first champ I ever bought was actually Sona followed by Soraka. Mained it every season even though riot has progressively taken a massive collective shit over actual support champs first with the release of Thresh who remade the role in his image being you either played what could compete with him or you didn't play. They have since further pushed it into these style by removing the strategic advantage the roll used to provide via map control of wards and clairvoyance instead deciding to gut it's strategic value via ward limits, and making ignite/exhaust so strong you have to take them over CV, although part of that is also a response to how stupid assassins got since Zed's release but that's a whole different topic.

In spite of all this garbage I have continued to main support until this season. This is the season that made me say "fuck this shit I'm out" and now I'm generally going top/mid/jungle because riot has literally fucked bot lane so damn hard with so many changes. If you are not collapsing on bot lane hard as hell as soon as the solo lanes are 6 you are not playing league of legends correctly. Bot lane will not be 6, most times the supports are garbage low peel high DPS champs which means they have very limited ability to actually defend said attack, most solo laners at this point should have a first power spike item(IE something with lethality) the turret is made of tissue paper and give a shitton of gold for the team and you can immediately rotate to a free dragon for additional stats.

In an effort to make 2v1 lanes not a thing Riot shifted all the pressure onto bot lane and then did their assassination rework which just created a ton of champs who are exceptionally powerful at completely destroying everyone in that lane and people are surprised bot lane is now the closest thing to hell you can find without dying and going to the real thing.

There is no fun in having to play a high DPS support because if you don't you will just get destroyed by other high DPS support, the problem is if you play a high DPS support you get destroyed by the inevitable gank. Bot lane is now a pick your poison lane, do you want to be able to beat your lane and die to the gank, or beat the gank but get shit on in lane. Janna is the perfect example of this, she beats the gank pretty effectively but she can't do shit to Zyra/Brand/malz type of pressure, hell even Morgana wrecks Janna lanes and she doesn't do near the damage of the others. The best shot you had at doing both was to pick Zyra because of the roots and the slows on her plants, but since plants only attack what your roots hit now you have to pray the entire enemy team is dumb enough to approach you in a perfect straight line.

For doing all this, for weathering this storm protecting your ADC and doing your absolutely damnest to get them far, get them items, and get out of the lane in one piece what are you rewarded with? A bullseye that tends to die before you can react to the diving Rengar/Kha/Zed/Talon/Leblanc/Fizz/Kat/Ahri/etc etc. Why the hell do I put so much effort into achieving this goal just to know everything both I and my ADC worked our asses off for can be erased and rendered irrelevant in literally a split second to some dumbass kitty/bug who spent the first 6 levels pveing and enjoying relative safety? That does not feel fun, rewarded, or enjoyable. Why "raise the puppy" when you know all you will end up with is a stupid loud mouthed chiwawa nipping at the heels of a damn nuclear bomb.

The degree of difference in power that riot allows to exist between assassins and literally every other class in the game is absurd. Zero champions in this game should instantly delete another under any reasonable circumstance. Sure you 50/0 and level 18 vs a 0/30 lvl 10 whatever go nuts, but when both groups have just been farming their lanes/jungle, both are 0/0 and the only difference is the fact bot has been sharing experience resulting in a 1-1.5 level gap then no that assassin should not be instantly blowing up the adc or support, there is no justification for it, it is pathetic design that is not fun to play against and is completely toxic to the game as a whole.

I play Lee/Vi/Rek'sai in the jungle I can pve until I'm ready to make plays and generally stay alive effectively.

I play TF/Talyiah/Morg/Annie in the mid lane I can roam, fight my laner make plays and be successful in team fights, I am dictating the flow of things as I see fit the overwhelming majority of the game.

I play Singed/Nasus/Mao/etc in the top lane and I can get tanky absorb a lot of punishment and have plenty of chance to make things happen while protecting my team while pretty much having a comfortable 1v1 until we TP bot lane.

I play any support or adc I get to endure the laning phase from hell, mostly at the mercy of the perpetual jungle ganks mid lane roams and top lane TPs, and if we somehow survival all this bullshit, win and get fed/feed my carry, we get the grand prize of watching the carry die before they even get to auto.

Riots reward for effort scale is absolutely FUBAR right now and it's the reason I finally said fuck bottom lane.

Kda matters too much unless your not the one carrying for example you can be adc with 2 kills 15 deaths then it's all about towers and objectives but honestly everyone wants to be the main character and no one ever thanks the support well for existing I mean ya sure my adc go 20 kills and 3 deaths but I did get 20 assists and kept my adc alive as raka but nope I'm a noob for having 3 cs 0 kills and 2 deaths

Ppl get harassed for existing bot supports fault and adc is always trash that's why most are against playing that role it's harder than others to play since you have to rely on each other for support to win

Play a tank support, problem solved.

Personally I just don't want to play against a cancerous mage with out of line base damage who gets to blow me and my ADC up for the first 10 minutes of the game without using any of their brain cells every single game.

I'd love to play support more often if Riot made it so actual supports were more playable and removed the cancer mages from bot lane, but as long as that role is infested with Zyras, Brands and Malzahars I don't want to touch it with a 10 foot pole.

Apart from the obvious- I do think people legitimately find it boring....... Of course, that's because your average player doesn't know what they're suposed to even be doing- and thus, do nothing.

People have this logic that basically says "I need to deal damage to carry and win". The support role is seen as a ward bot, and a role dedicated to babysitting a (sometimes incompetent) adc player. Overall, even if I'm playing Brand, which I'm very comfortable on, I can't carry if other lanes are losing. Whereas if I was mid, I'm much more confident in my ability to win the game.

I think the main reason people don't like supporting is because you lack the ability to solo carry, and people dislike that feeling. Also the "support is boring" which I disagree with entirely. Being a play maker is fun as hell!

At least from my friend group people dislike playing support in soloQ because you usually have to rely heavily on someone you don't know and might be complete garbage. If your ADC ends up being bad you end up feeling useless for 20 minutes or more. We all play support at one point or another when we group up for normals and whatnot. Support is a lot more fun if you actually know and can properly communicate with your ADC.

BastionKross1 votes

Indeed. In a premade, support actually feels like it has value since you're helping someone you know can carry the game. There are several people on my friends list that I would gladly be a support for since they've demonstrated to me that if I can get them a lead in lane they can dominate the game 9 times out of 10. I can trust them to carry me.

In SoloQ, I don't know the marksman. I've never played with him, I don't know if he's playing his best marksman or trying out something new, and I damn sure don't trust him to carry me. That's a great way to spend the laning phase getting him ahead only to watch him position poorly and be deleted every teamfight while he blames me for not peeling.

Yeah, no thank you. If I'm forced to support in SoloQ, I will pick a "support" like Vel or Brand or Zyra so I can take the kills and carry myself without having to rely on a marksman who may or may not know what the hell they're doing.

Because they were autofilled and cba to actually do their job for the team. I actually win extremely often when I get autofilled to support since I actually know how to play it lol.

I know how to play it as well, I play Naut support. :3

Many people just care about their damage and KDA.

They underestimate the value of vision and utility.

Sadly, many people just dislike supportive play-styles in gaming in general.

Little do they realize that supports are usually why they win in team fights.

They realize what you can do pretty quickly when you decide to sacrifice them to protect someone more useful.

"doesn't impact the game"

looks back at times Sona ult won the game

looks back at when Naut Q helped shut down the carry

Looks back at when Janna ult won the game

then finally looks at Leona support carrying games

You were saying?

our team aces the team everyone is in the below 15% hp range.

Gragas mid who died very early in the fight rushes down mid flashes throws barrel and ult sure he is going to get the quadra-pentakill. Braum W on closest ally to gragas Q gragas then pops E catches entire gragas burst gets knocked back. Lucian proc's the stun and gragas gets killed again. enemy team 0/5 surenders.

supports are far more crucial then the kiddies think.

right and if they did why does 95% of the community hate doing it ? but wait you say its imporatnmt

If they are auto filled into a support, why bother wanting to trade? You're basically guaranteed to support at least once now.

sobi9991 votes

well 2 reasons. One they might have been autofilled 2nd they are always behind in xp/gold and with the damage creep so high they just get burst down. Traditional supp are not really mobile so are unable to defend for themselves. Plus you get hardly any kills.

meowwow71 votes

i think it's either auto fill or the enemy team vs bot lane on over half of the matches

New Tool Album1 votes

because autofill puts you into a role you don't want to play, given how supports are literally there to protect and set up kills for an adc or the team, all the while trying to get a build with a sub par gold income, yawnnnnnnn*[zombie-brand-clap]*

No flash no life1 votes

Support is the player maker and map controller, but the biggest frustration people get from playing support is that they are entirely dependent on their team instead of being an independent that can carry.

Even if you have godlike mechanic and literally landed all of your skills on the entire enemy team, if your team decides for some reason to miss all their skill shots or believes that 6 creep on the side is more important than the team fight, you're still going to lose and there is nothing you can do about it. If your team's carries holding onto all the $ decide to troll, you have no resource on you to 1v1 any of your opponent apart from their underfarmed support.

tl;dr support carries the team but cannot carry the game.

Boring and super team reliant. And of course, autofill.

Big Lincoln1 votes

because I will hover bard and despite that my ADC will try to pick some shit like Vayne

so no I'm gonna ask to swap

grug1 votes

it does impact the game but its boring.

many idiots just play for KD and thats why i believe there are so many people in bronze/silver, support is the least effective role for farming KD. can't be the hero of your own story if everyone says you got carried with a crap KD. It's psychologically damning to think you got carried without doing much.

As a support main I legit do not remember the last time anyone outside of laning phase let me take the cannon with my relic shield, you always have to fight for it. Half the time with random adcs they take the cannon as well. Just shows the disregard that people have for the role that is only there to help them.

That and the 25% chance the adc will just afk if they get even a single assist in lane.

It's a combination of factors. Across all games, the supportive role tends to be the least popular, because most players want to be the ones dealing the most damage or taking up the most space, but on top of that, supporting in League also feels like it's loaded with more constraints than most other classes. Whereas most other can classes can more or less go as they please, pick the items they want in the order they like, and call the shots, supports mostly just follow others around and lay wards, which can feel limiting and often frustrating. Additionally, the support is often the go-to teammate to blame when something goes wrong, especially if your bot lane is losing. The relative unpopularity of supporting also tends to pile on top of itself, so a lot of players don't want to play support simply because they've been forced to play support beforehand, or just because support is generally seen as a bad role to have.
