Thoughts on Warwick's rework

The Uncaged Wrath of Zaun, someone with that title means business, bloody Business at that! So, with Warwick having just hit the PBE I just had to jump into some games to test out CertainlyT's take on one of League's oldest champions and after having been forced to play Mordekaiser in 70% of those games and a precious few Warwick games I feel I've gotten enough input to portray my very own thoughts on this rework.

Basically, what I've come to notice with the rework is that He's a https://lastfm-img2.akamaized.net/i/u/300x300/2d93edec69b5466d815ad98be101bcd6.jpg

Sneaky Metal reference aside, the new Warwick FEELS powerful in both gameplay and thematic, the latter definitely being the selling point for me personally. Everything about the new Warwick has a place in his design and contributes to the finished product that is The Wrath of Zaun. But enough of me praising this rework, let's get into his abilities and see WHY this rework delivers!

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MXhbCVzAzvg/WHXF-464dQI/AAAAAAABA-o/m1JX4-ENEfs5MKdC4Cq60nnj-cnVNbjqgCLcB/s1600/WarwickP.png Eternal Hunger This might just be the part of his kit that wasn't changed too heavily, in fact it functionally is still the same old "Eternal thirst" What it does is provide excellent sustain when clearing the jungle as well as giving Warwick the edge in those Adrenaline-inducing moments of being low HP and trying to just survive. It is thematically speaking very fitting, especially if you see a Warwick just claw his health back when low. He's able to potentially heal for 120 Hp EVERY AA when below 25% hp.

Definitely a good passive for a Jungler and Diver but moving on....

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R7TpFYVPQXw/WHXF-yemryI/AAAAAAABA-k/Zp9SlL3Vz7UYfrCsTRXhvITMsz9A5hd9wCLcB/s1600/WarwickQ.png Jaws of the Beast Still, very similar to his old Q, Hungering strike with a very subtle skill ceiling added to it. This makes WW's jungling rather easy and provides even more combat sustain with the large health chunks he rips out of his enemies, also very thematic, seeing that he just viciously bites his foes.

Being able to follow blinks is less about skill and more about luck sadly but it's a cool feature and makes for rather goofy misplays. The real value of this skill lies in Warwick's duelling prowess through the 70% healing this ability gets at rank 5 The ability to dance around skillshot reliant champions is also invaluable and makes him hard to peel off once in range

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zW-Jfb-xEGA/WHXF_LKDGbI/AAAAAAABA-0/gI3UzRbaCtQm3LdUTj55WSHJ6cOhkuxEQCLcB/s1600/WarwickW.png Blood Hunt Okay, this is probably my favorite aspect of his new kit as it's not only a passive and thus always active but delivers on his theme as this Chimeric Werewolf out for blood. It is THE thematic core of his kit, not only through its awesome SFX's but also by Warwick going feral and just following the scent of his victim's blood. The movespeed is great, the tracking allows for some rather nice chasing tools and the Attack speed makes him extremely lethal when stalking low HP enemies

And the active, oh boy. It's basically a better thrill of the hunt, driving that spike into Warwick's spine and going all beastmode on the enemy, it's definitely where Warwick shines in the mid and late game when he gets going and stalks his prey.

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-REa6P2ja08E/WHXF-4fCGlI/AAAAAAABA-s/bhWgHdVunGoMhL1kGlB3cjBBirWC1-bKQCLcB/s1600/WarwickE.png Primal Howl Remember old Warwick's ganking? Me neither... But with this new E Warwick actually has a way to reliably gank without him to be six and his ultimate being off cooldown. Primal Howl is not only great CC by being an AoE FEAR but also the diving tool he needs to do his job. Nothing beats lunging in with your R only to absorb the blunt force of the enemy's retaliation with its damage reduction and just fearing all of them once the effect wears off, makes him a force to be reckoned with.

Also, protip for early WW ganking. Use Jaws of the Beast to get behind the enemy and fear them away with primal Howl, makes for a rather fancy early ganking tool.

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bxJWe0Kf4xc/WHXF-4OdS3I/AAAAAAABA-w/sww8kSsBeyUj1jUg5Gw9mmOCfeNa8E8RwCLcB/s1600/WarwickR.png Finally, his ultimate Infinite Duress It didn't change all that much besides being a SKILLSHOT, which scales with MOVEMENT SPEED. I feel like I'm just constantly repeating myself but this just works so well with Warwick's fantasy. Amassing a buttton of MS only to lunge straight for the enemy and trying to rip their throat out really fits the Werewolf theme Warwick's known for. The entirety of its damage healing him seems a bit excessive but then again he'll use it to engage, thus making the heal less of a problem.

What this ult creates is a skill ceiling which promotes one of my favorite things about league STRATEGIC THINKING. You'll have to know how to flank and when to engage to get the best use of Infinite Duress as otherwise you'd just get exploded or just waste it on a frontliner. It works well with Blood Hunt to create this hunting Fantasy Warwick achieves even better than current Rengar.

Closing Remarks This Warwick rework is beast, in more ways than one. Not only did it keep the core of his being intact but IMPROVED it in every way possible, it delivers on his thematic fantasy as well as giving him more depth and agency other than pressing R on an enemy champion. All in all I feel this is one of the best VGU's since Sion's and I'm definitely going to add Warwick to my Champion pool.

(Also, Tried playing him top, doesn't work that well, sorry Tidal)

Anyways, I'm totally amazed of how Riot managed to capture the essence of Warwick and just put it into a really cool kit, truly delivering on everything one would hope for when picking the Uncaged Wrath of Zaun.

10/10, would give CertainlyT another chance to rework some ol' champions.

Nice breakdown. I hope when we get around to Morde VGU you love it just as much!

Malicious Metal16 votes

I hope you like a challenge, cause it'll be rather hard to achieve :)

Just kidding, I'm definitely looking forward to it. Hell, as long as he's thematically the same ol' Murder Emperor I love he'll be perfect.

Just like Warwick I hope you'll go for the thematic delivery because in the end what differentiates champions and truly makes them unique is a kit that just oozes cohesive design.

If he doesn't break into guitar solos that summons lightning every few minutes he will be sorely disappointed.

Big Lincoln1 votes

what did you guys intend for him to build offensively?

it feels like on-hits are very mediocre due to his W passive making attack speed items kind of wasteful. full AD seems enticing but he can't really utilize lifesteal all too great because he's got magic damage on everything except for autos

just curious what was intended; I'd kind of prefer if he didn't turn out to be another triforce diver

YumaS2Astral5 votes

item 3748 is an on-hit item that does not have attack speed. Peharps Warwick can make use of it, especially since he is going to build tanky and will probably have a lot of HP.

Master Lycan1 votes

My Build on NewWick is probably gonna be; item 1416 item 3748 item 3071 item 3158 item 3512 item 3065 for Jungle item 3078 item 3748 item 3071 item 3009 item 3512 item 3742 for Top

And please don't make me explain why Black Cleaver is good, AGAIN!

You should use rageblade instead! ;p

Fuck you I'll make it work somehow. :^)

You fockin' wot? Gangplank

10/10, would give CertainlyT another chance to rework some ol' champions.

CertainlyT purchased Redemption item 3107

I'm personally really excited for the Warwick Rework, his Feral skin being the only let-down (I was really looking forward to that one :c), can't wait for him to hit live to make him work toplane (I'll make it work fuck you.)

Ralanr8 votes

If you make it work, share the secret. I suck at jungling.

TyrekGoldenspear7 votes

Nah dude you don't suck. I've seen you enough times.

It's just that you play slow junglers in a meta of fast ones.

May I suggest a faster one like Hecarim? :^)

Malicious Metal10 votes

He hates Hecarim though.

Sahn Uzal11 votes

Does player play Hecarim? If yes, player might like Hecarim or just abuses FotM If no, player most likely hates Hecarim :^)

Oh my god. The downvote storm!

Yeah there seem to be some downvote trolls out there o.o

I don't play Hecarim and I hate him

Sahn Uzal2 votes

I don't even hate Hecarim, that just seems to be the case quite often :P

Like, incredibly hate him.

Might as well pick him up to learn how to fuck him up.

TheSingularity7 votes

Considering how well this one went, like apart from feral/hyena WW which comes down to personal pref, this rework is spot on and will come down to the numbers upon release whether or not he's broken af

Spaceman5pff4 votes

He will definitely frustrate players who are just learning about when to shove in their lane.

Especially ones who will AT ALL COSTS push to enemy tower after getting a kill. They will get super frustrated when they try to do this at low HP and WW just ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMS in and bites them

TheSingularity4 votes

Definitely but that's that case with any new champ. And this rework pretty much makes him a new champ :)

HexaDecimel2 votes

CertainlyT designs the kits not the skins.

Ralanr9 votes

I'm excited to relearn the jungle with him. I haven't been this excited with a VO since Sion.

The anger and fury he spews, its basically letting every ounce of hatred and wrath he's held inside out towards everything around him. I freaking love it.

Kit wise he's different from what I normally play. I usually prefer ability heavy melee champions, but I should learn more AA heavy melee champions to get a better grasp on sticking into combat.

And he has a TRACKING MECHANIC. Fuck yes.

Big Lincoln4 votes

warwick will be an AD/triforce champion

item 1412 item 3078 item 3748

letting u know in advance, far superior to full on-hit builds

ThePikol4 votes

Why not something like: item 1419 item 3091 item 3009 item 3742 item 3748 ? He need that on-hit effects on Q and R and movement speed. The last item will probably be tank item or you can have Triforce somewhere here

Malicious Metal15 votes

He's actually rather squishy if not built with a few Hp items. I feel the most consistent build would be something like this: item 3748 item 1413 item 3742 as core and finishing with stuff like item 3053 item 3153 item 3065 item 3800

RocketRelm1 votes

You know, there was a part of me envisioning item 3142 in his kit, with the main issue being that he needed tank items, because Dat Active move speed synergizes so well with his ult, but Righetous Glory fits so well with him overall.

I can definitely see some weirdness in terms of "okay, run at this enemy tower 90 degrees away from your target for 1/4th a second to get the Glory Speed Buff, then click R without turning to face your target.", but that might not be the worst thing.

The Fast6 votes

All of his kit does magic damage, so the lethality is more or less wasted.

Spoofghoul3 votes

partly wasted he still does a lot of his damage through basic attacks which will benefit from the lethality

Cremepie3 votes

What did you build on him?? Is his kit mana hungry right now? item 1419 item 3153 item 3071 item 3022 item 3812 item 3078 item 3142 item 3742 item 3110 item 3065 item 3156 item 3748 all seem too good on him I cant imagine whats best for him atm.

The Fast4 votes

His entire kit is magic damage, so Youmuu's, Cleaver, and Death's Dance are wasted on him. The other items are pretty swell though.

Cremepie1 votes

well his kit does magic damage, but his Q scales on AD ratios and the majority of his damage is still autos. I was thinking maaaaybe Youmuu's because of the out of combat movement speed and the increased damage against squishies. As for Death's dance just the High AD and defensive steroid it gives.

But hey judging from what others have posted here Im probably just gonna go Trinity and Titanic and maybe steraks/Botrk anyway so w/e.

AtheosisX1 votes

They upped his skill floor as well. He's not anywhere close to being as easy or forgiving now. Personally I think that's fine, but it does go against what Riot said their intention was with this rework.

Darf Rakki5 votes

I don't think the skill floor moved that much, his kit is still fairly simple and easy to understand for a new player, while some depth was added to keep things interesting for veterans.

AtheosisX1 votes

There are a lot of junglers that are easier and more straightforward now. Volibear, Sejuani, and Amumu come immediately to mind. Warwick used to be the easiest jungler by far, but the new ult changes that. I'm kind of starting to think a lot of people have forgotten what it's like to be new to LoL. A skill shot ult, that's a dash, and only hits one target, is not noob-friendly. Period.

Darf Rakki6 votes

skill shots aren't the most complicated thing in the world. sure they can miss, but new players are usually going to be playing against people who don't know how to dodge or body block for a carry, so all they really need to do is aim.

AtheosisX2 votes

Sure, but when an ult is a skill shot the stakes get much higher. And when the skillshot involves hurling yourself into the enemy it often becomes life or death. I mean really, this is pretty straightforward. New WW is not going to be anywhere close to as easy as old WW. Not that that means he'll be particularly hard to play, just not as easy. I can't begin to understand how anyone can argue against this.

Doozku2 votes

He literally does decision making for you. New players follow the blood scents that lead to easy ganks. Ult may be a skill shot but rest of him is literally telling new players what to do.

AtheosisX1 votes

If you follow the blood trail every time it pops up you're going to have a bad time.

Doozku3 votes

New players probably won't follow it every time, but think about it like this. New players have null map awareness and play with screenlock. Ww teaches new players about by leading players to ideal gank situations with Ww thanks to his speed boost.

Glory ln Death1 votes

Skill floor stayed the same, skill ceiling went up about 20 stories.

Honestly, he's more forgiving, since he can use his ult as an escape tool and has damage reduction + AOE fear that can be used offensively or defensively.

AtheosisX1 votes

More forgiving? A skill shot ult that hits a single target, and leaves you massively out of position if you miss, is the opposite of forgiving. I think you are confusing forgiving with flexible.

Glory ln Death5 votes

New Warwick:

  • You were caught out of position and the enemy has you cornered? Ult away. You Q'd a target and followed them through their flash into their team? Fear them all, then ult away. You missed your ult and are now on the opposite side from your team? Get a hefty damage reduction, fear anyone who comes near you, and Q back to your team's side.

Old Warwick:

  • You were caught out of position and the enemy has you cornered? Sucks to be you. You ulted a target and ended up surrounded by their team? Sucks to be you.

New Warwick has more things he can mess up, but he also has more things he can do to fix his mistakes.
