Bans are... kinda pointless right now huh?

Like, I was talking with my friends and we were looking at the bannable champions. And realized, "Hey. With only 6 bans, aren't there like more than at least 10 champions that are almost balence-breakingly strong?"

This is nothing new. Everyone has been asking for more ban slots for a bit, but like, really look at the champions.

Back around season 2 when Kassadin was the end all be all champion, you banned him so that you wouldn't lose. Because 9 times out of 10, if Kass got through. God help your team.

I was in around late season 2, early season 3, so I do remember Renekton still being the superior top laner, while you perma banned Kass. And I do believe the main bans at the time that I saw every single game, were Shen, Malphite, Amumu, Renekton, Kassadin and.... shoot I can't remember who was the last ban. Was it Zac? I think it was Zac. Maybe Kha Ziks? Rengar? Someone tell me please... anyway!

But yeah you banned those champions because at the time they had enough influence to carry games and pretty much shove it into their teams favor. But there really only a few.

Nowadays? Fiora, Graves, Lulu, Kog Maw, Corki, Ezreal (i'm stretching it with Ezreal and Corki but they are stupid strong right now), Soraka, Tahm, Xin Zhao, Master Yi, Jax, Udyr, Janna (around diamond/plat), Lux, Gangplank, there's probably more. Some people might throw Annie and Lee Sin in there. Maybe Rengar? Let's not forget possibly Zed and Talon. And Mundo who goes where he pleases.

Overall that's at LEAST 15 champions that possess a ton of game influence that can push the game into the other team's favor.

You banned out Fiora, Graves, Udyr, Tahm, Soraka and Gangplank. Well now there's still 9 or more other champions that can still hold as much influence as those banned champions.

So it's almost pointless to even ban at all!

You tell me what you guys think. Are bans pointless nowadays?

If your goal is to ban all the broken meta champs, yeah, they're useless.

If your goal is to ban counters to your picks, they're pretty useful.

No, they aren't. People are just bad at counterplaying.

Bans have pretty much always been wasted banning the "OP" champions.

Win-rates and champion performance is a pretty steady climb from 45% to 55%. If you ban all the 55% champions, the 54% champions are available and always have been. If you increase the number of bans to take out all the 55% and 54% champions, there's all the 53% champions left.

The only time banning OP champions has really been appropriate is if Riot seriously messed up and released someone that always wins all the time: but that happens about 1% as often as boards would have you believe.

Much better use of bans would be taking away common comfort picks your opponent's might use so you put them on a champion they're much less comfortable with. Banning popular picks so your opponents are forced onto a champion they have 60 less games of experience on is going to do a lot more for you.

Or just banning champions that would ruin your team-comp. If you want a lot of early pressure, you could ban a lot of popular picks that stall out games. If you want to run a full AD comp, ban armor-stacking tanks that love to punish that comp.

Banning champions because all the salty 11 year olds from NA forums think they're OP is almost a complete and total waste of them. Only reason to resort to that is being lazy, you're not gaining any strategic impact from banning OP champions because they're OP.
