Has any Rioters demonstrated the same level of communication that Overwatch game developers had?

:s

I don't recall Rito ever talking about this 10 minute game over shite but we got Kaplan talking about a similar meta issue in the "Dive" meta. He knows what he says might make people freak out as well but HE DOESN'T JUST KEEP IT TO HIMSELF.

I'm not too keen on Overwatch forums or anything but I do know that Kaplan is really loved by the community. Go to any Overwatch video and you see comments about "Daddy Jeff" and the like.

Go to any league video and you see "bleh"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMAAfm095tg

Most of these videos haven't been memorable to me as well. This points towards the fact that the videos don't carry much weight behind them. I don't even play Overwatch that often but I've got a better memory of every developer update video this put up.

I don't play Overwatch, but I think Riot's level of communication is excellent compared to the level of communication I've seen from other companies with their playerbases.

Ahh yes. Just take what's given to you I guess.

That kinds just reminds me of what meddler does like every week.

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/player/NA/Meddler?content_type=discussion

You're just looking at one thing. I dont know what overwatch does, but for communication, off the top of my head I think about meddler's post doing that Anything about the PBE lolnexus articles (Which are great) The dive - 1 hour weekly podcast by Jatt, Kobe, and Azael Multiple posts in the boards Multiple post on reddit Multiple posts in subreddits (ex: champ specific ones) Even all the things they do in LCS that aren't even the games. Like This or that, picks to watch, etc. /All Chat went on for a while lol, thats is rip now though

Riot members talk to their audience more than any other company I've ever seen. This is just what I immediately think of, I'm sure there are others. Overwatch doesn't do more lol

They got daddy jeff and we got our memes too lol. Half the casters are walking memes lmao

One massive thing that addresses an important issue in Overwatch but yeah. One thing I guess.

Quick Gameplay thoughts are just that "quick". Provide little insight into big things in the game and mostly talk about the PBE patch. Comments throughout are also broad and not many thoughts are actually talked about. "He's kinda strong". "We're not looking at her yet". "I think he's in a good spot". I think the fact most discussion is just one reply shows how it is lacking. However it's okay right? These are just quick gameplay thoughts, we'll get actual fully formed thoughts somewhere else.

Nope.

lolnexus articles are just okay if you ask me. I'm not like "wow that was really insightful" when I read about why autofill is a thing. That's more personal I guess but I find a lot of obvious things in those articles. A big issue is lack of conversation in gameplay and when you go to the gameplay tag in lolnexus it's pretty barren.

The Dive is mostly about eSports.

Multiple posts on boards/reddit/subreddits/LCS/AllChat also don't provide much insight.

Casters don't impact how the game is balanced. They are insightful but they are like any player with their knowledge of the meta. They're not working for Riot balance; they're players that are also casting. Not everyone watches eSports but everyone is effected by balance changes if they play the game, even if they're super casual.

Has Riot ever talked about season 3 top lane trinity? Or the super farm season 4 jungle meta? Or the fact that Lee Sin is super cancer? The answer to all these questions is no and they never ever chicken peppers talk about metas or balance and stuff. Also the stupid spotlight philosophy.

If Kaplan only talked about skins in Overwatch he wouldn't be as popular for sure. He talks about everything though and also looks into gameplay. He even talked about CTF mode and thoughts on it being put into competitive and reasoning and all of that mumbo jumbo that was extra but really appreciated. He even talked about Zero G on the new map and how they designed it as something cool but won't change the competitive atmosphere of the game too much and reasons why.

Riot just doesn't match up.

That is literally what the video you linked is lol. That video was relevant to things that were going on at that moment. There's another one on state of the game. They've done that a few times over the nexus and podcasts.

Idk how big that one thing is for OW so I can't bring up something to compare to it that I know is similar. Maybe a comparable one would be how top/bot lane swaps were an issue in high elo/competitive play. Or any mid/preseason update for larger issues that they looked to solve.

I didn't play in season 3 or 4, so I don't know. I mean its changed right lol :p. If players have a big problem with somthing, it usually ends on a Ask Riot article. Whether lee sin is a problem or not is subjective. They've certainly talked about other champions, but not lee sin. Reworks are in-game proof. You can't just point out one thing like that. My friends that play overwatch have hated Roadhog forever lol. Now that man is cancer lmao. Hook > Oneshot

Riot does alot, only counting very specific conversations on one topic as insight and disregarding everything else just seems wrong. Riot talks more for sure, maybe not as in-depth. eSports for league has much more of an audience. Alot of the content they make is enjoyable to this large crowd. They do interesting things like rift rivals and all-stars event.

KoKoboto1 votes

No it isn't... Watch the video and look at the comments...

this didnt clear up anything it was more of a ya sometimes breaking the meta is good sometimes its not, the few examples were all stuff the pros did. if im not a pro how ppl know if that im not trolling? and even if they do and im still testing things out ill still get reported cause im not playing meta which will eventually lead to a ban. what are ppl supposed to do keep playing it till you get banned to know for sure? that doesnt seem fair if im just experimenting till i find a way to make it work. i guess good job on addressing that there is an issue but maybe some possible solutions or next steps to resolving the issue next time -William Concepcion

One of the highly upvoted comments... All the video did was talk about how the meta came to be and how off-meta builds worked. It didn't address balance/actual gameplay of unusual playstyles. Just talked about them. No thoughts or discussion.

Idk how big that one thing is for OW

... I literally give the comparison and severity of the issue in the first sentence of the original post... A lot of people don't like this "dive" meta in Overwatch and Overwatch developers came out to address it. A lot of people don't like this "10 minute = game is over" meta that has also been going on since the latter half of season 4... and no one has ever talked about it.

it usually ends on a Ask Riot article.

Really?

lolnexus articles are just okay if you ask me. I'm not like "wow that was really insightful" when I read about why autofill is a thing. That's more personal I guess but I find a lot of obvious things in those articles. A big issue is lack of conversation in gameplay and when you go to the gameplay tag in lolnexus it's pretty barren.

...

Whether lee sin is a problem or not is subjective.

People have been complaining about Lee Sin since time... How can you even say it's subjective... HAVE YOU SEEN HIS BANRATES????

Reworks are in-game proof.

Reworks are reworks. Reworks aren't communication. I like reworks but I'm not going to say "wow Riot really communicated to the playerbase about recent gameplay and the meta with this rework".

Riot does alot, only counting very specific conversations on one topic as insight and disregarding everything else just seems wrong. Riot talks more for sure. eSports for league has much more of an audience. Alot of the content they make is enjoyable to this large crowd. They do interesting things like rift rivals and all-stars event.

What does this have to do with anything? I've gave reasons as to why I can disregard all the other mumbo jumbo and you've literally given me no reasons as to why I shouldn't. Like what are you even talking about? ESports is fun and casters yelling "LCS BIG PLAYS" is fun but what is the connection to thought, discussion and communication of actual gameplay?

Cocho2 votes

We cant begin to have a conversation comparing the two because I don't know what overwatch does. You're just going to pull out the weakest part of my opinions with a subjective argument. How we interpret the information they give us is different. I'll do this one more time lol. Whether its right or wrong isnt even the question. Its just the fact that they do.

I'm bringing up things like reddit, esports, and podcasts because this is the title of your post.

"Has any Rioters demonstrated the same level of communication that Overwatch game developers had?"

To say no is just wrong. I've given you plenty of examples of riot members communicating on one subject or another.

Reworks are reworks. Reworks aren't communication. I like reworks but I'm not going to say "wow Riot really communicated to the playerbase about recent gameplay and the meta with this rework".

I play alot of katarina, and alot of core issues were solved by the rework. Beluga whale and other members where clear on their direction, they brought in players that play her to play test her. He answered questions frequently on reddit and still does.

KoKoboto1 votes

So you're only going to look at the title and ignore the rest of the post. That's fine I guess but why are you even commenting here? Yeah I can agree, Riot says a lot of words. If your only intention was to tell me this you shouldn't have commented in the first place. But anyways good job, you proved an already obvious thing.

I'm not too keen on Overwatch forums or anything but I do know that Kaplan is really loved by the community. Go to any Overwatch video and you see comments about "Daddy Jeff" and the like.

Go to any league video and you see "bleh"

Idk much about what Overwatch does either but that one comment along with the developer videos I have watched has shown way more communication about thoughts/gameplay/etc than League of Legends people have. I guess you don't give a damn though because you're only talking about their word count.

I don't think you're using the word 'subjective' correctly as well.

In a AMA on reddit, jeff said he was platinum in the 2500 elo range. That like top 33%.

If you compare that league, he's in gold 5 or silver 1. There is only so much in-game analysis that I could take seriously from that rank of a player. Developers typically don't do that type of analysis because that isn't what they specialize in. League developers are also in that range but they don't go on spiels pretending like they know something. If I disregard everything Jeff says in that post, and anything in-depth that he has to say, tell me why I shouldn't.

KoKoboto1 votes

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/EfJIEgVB-just-because-someone-is-in-a-low-rank-doesnt-mean-theyre-automatically-wrong-or-inqualified

lel cause game developer is ~gold and silver, their opinion can't be taken seriously wow what a scrub. wow how did this ~gold silver player even get a job developing games if they're only ~gold and silver lmaooo what a nooblord, lmfao of course everything this Kaplan says is bullshit because he is a ~gold silver player xdd his thoughts don't matter xd

hey you know what, screw listening to a lot of professional coaches as well xdd i mean most of them are below diamond but the players are challenjour so why should they even listen to them xddd

Rank isn't equivalent to the ability of understanding why things are the way they are. I'm Gold but I know every reason why champions and decisions are picked and made in LCS and could tell you why if you brought up anything. A lot of sport coaches can't beat players in the sport but that doesn't mean they can't teach the game.

"Developers typically don't do that type of analysis because that isn't what they do." For sure. They ignore gameplay because they don't actually even work with all that. They just develop the game which as everyone knows has NOTHING to do with gameplay or how the meta works xddd

But again you bring up another point that's irrelevant to the actual comparison I'm making between Overwatch and League of Legends developers and ignoring my post :s

Cocho1 votes

Both imo, kinda depends. Knowledge helps you climb. Either way, I cant read the article and tell you why I disagree or agree with the analysis.

I'll give you that ow takes more mechanics, so knowledge = skill isnt as true for OW.

Everything you say I disagree with, and everything I say, you disagree with. Im just gonna agree to disagree.

Since you think im just meming, then I'll just meme.

Jeff silver 1 lul, OW competitive? Shit gets less views than LoL Oceania.

When did OW start being a competitive game? Isnt it like COD.

If only like 1000 players watch OW esports, I cant imagine how much even read the competitive articles.

How is jeff able to make in-depth analysis if their own casters can't?

KoKoboto1 votes

Yeah you're just bringing up a bunch of irrelevant stuff now so g'day.

Who cares if overwatch takes more mechanics?

We're discussing the amount of communication they give out. The game taking more or less mechanics shouldn't effect that. Of course a complex game would give more to talk about and technically League of Legends is more complex. So in this case Overwatch shows better communication as they talk more when they have less to talk about. And it's not just a bunch of repeats.

Who cares if we disagree?

Who cares about the competitive scene?

Competitive scene doesn't effect game developers ability to communicate gameplay and meta stuff. Sure it gives another thing to talk about but doesn't effect what is already available to talk about.

Who cares about how many people read competitive articicles? Who cares about competitive articles?

For starters saying no one reads what a game developer puts out is just wrong. And regardless putting out thoughts is already better than saying nothing at all.

Who cares about comparing casters and game developers?

G'day.

Cocho1 votes

The mechanic thing was relevant because you can climb in league with just knowledge. Execution isnt as big of a deal of some champs. I don't care if you agree with me, I'm just saying riot does communicate.

People get tattoos of their favorite teams and buy their apparel to support them. But I guess nobody cares

'Communication'

Communication from Blizzard is like expecting a blizzard on a sunny day.

They do what they want.

If there was 'communication' ranked bugs would have been fixed and map balance would have been a thing as well.

I've played games from both companies. Blizzard's is now sub-par to riots. That is because Riot stepped up for one. Another is Blizzard didn't seem to give a crap since the release of Diablo 4 or maybe even earlier during the World of Warcraft Expansions (Mysts of Pandaria or earlier.)

KoKoboto1 votes

"If a company communicated with us they would have been able to fix their in-game bugs by now!"

What?

"If a company communicated with us more they would have been able to change a whole map to balance it out a smidge more!"

What?

This map issue I think is real. I know a lot of players talk about the two capture point maps and I'm not sure about the balance behind it but just by THINKING I know that Blizzard has to take way more into consideration than when discussing say a single hero. They gotta consider all the balance implications with every hero and also need resources to change the map. They also gotta consider if it is even an issue.

Also they changed Eichenwald in response to player comments so...

Changing an entire map =/= fixing certain parts that are clearly unbalanced.

Secondly, there is a thing that Ranked Counter Strike does. It's called map balance choices.

Third: What part of 'Player leaves game' and saying you will be kicked out in x minutes then never get kicked out isn't a bug to you? That was months ago since I last played. But, it also lasted for months on end. On a competitive scene. Do you see anything wrong with this picture?

It'd be interesting but I'm pretty sure you're focused on getting the bugs fixed. Knowing this, there's no discussion to be had...

I quit overwatch because they left that bug in there for more than 6 months first off.

You quit because of a bug. Not because of communication. You're also acting like I play Overwatch a ton when I clearly said I didn't. I know about the game and the community enough to know that the communication is better though.

I think the fact that all heroes are playable speaks for itself.

Only if you match their mindset. They are tolerant only if you agree with them. At least even the Wardens try here.

Now whether or not they are is a different matter. lol

Where did I say the community is better? Where did I ever compare the two game communties? The only thing I've been comparing was communication between developers and the playerbase.

Wardens and moderators have been doing great at getting discussion going and MODERATING THE BOARD. They don't impact game balance and thus aren't the ones who are capable of talking about game balance.

Balance changes and champions in general are tied very much to specific designers which is why most Designers stay away from the board. We've had several designers have an extremely strong presence on the boards. What would typically happen is that they would make dozens (literally) posts on the boards in meme and balance threads alike. They'd talk about the champion that they are working on, asking questions about what people like and then.. Hopefully release the champion (or rework).

Then they would receive the negativity and hate for the champion and STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THE BOARDS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT DUMB.

I immensely respect Meddler for putting up with all the crap that he is getting and keeping his Balance series going.

So why is it different in Overwatch? It's simply much easier with such a small championpool and without items. There are much less changes which means that everything is easier to overlook and there are less opportunities for hate.

I know that people will try to argue that this is good but keep in mind that it's also the reason why people have complained about Overwatch - and also the reason why Jeff Kaplan had to make this post. League does it differently because it's a different game and people generally like that. But it also comes with a lot of toxicity which means that it's hard for designers to talk with the community. But we still got Meddler and some designers talking on twitter, so there is that.

Mhm. Riot hasn't been able to compare to Overwatch's level of communication and a big part of that is due to the circumstances of the game. However the least they could do is try and I haven't seen anyone try yet. Who cares about haters? All celebrities have haters but they usually say "haters gonna hate" so yeah. Getting shit from the community resulting in an unwillingness to talk is a bad excuse.

I think you misunderstood me, I was saying that there were occasionally designers who were very active on the boards and would post a lot about their projects. CertainlyT was kinda active and he did post about Mordekaiser before the release. But I was more talking about Repertoir who posted A LOT and he did the Skarner update. People loved him but were diisappointed when the Skarner update came. He tried talking about it with the community but he got alot of hate and then tuned it down. Here is what it used to look like.

People got invested in the community. That's why they are affected. Now they aren't as invested anymore, which is healthy. Tbh I really don't know how much communication Overwatch has because I quit the game after 2 weeks but I think Meddler's Balance Thoughts are pretty damn good.

Sir Yamazuki2 votes

Do we really need Riot wasting resources in hiring someone specifically to post generic stuff? What he posted is hardly much of anything and he dragged out something that could have been said in a paragraph. Those are also things Riot said before, and they comment on a lot. Patch notes come with context, when people complain extensively why champion isn't nerfed they comment on that. They explain why reworks occur, why item changes occur and even other things like skins champion design and they even had in depth explanation on the networking side of the game back when they were moving the servers.

Prior to Riot I had never seen any publisher or developer go in depth into so many things. While I don't always agree with Riot's logic it doesn't mean I'm going to deny what they do.

By the way, you can't really blame Riot for how the community chooses to respond. The League of Legends community is extremely large which in turn means a higher count of negativity. You should have seen how some members of the community behaved when a certain Riot Employee "died". There was also the issue of death threats and the like targeted at another employee too.

No we don't need Riot wasting resources just to get generic stuff out. Who said that we did?

But anyways I'm too drained to reply fully.

The OW team is pretty garbage lmao. Yeah Jeff does some decent updates but they're FAR from a shining example of what a gaming company can be like in terms of transparency.

You wanna start comparing companies, DE is, by a WIDE margin, the best when it comes to talking to their playerbase.

That isn't the point but point noted nonetheless. I don't think they're garbage after reading that reply and also watching developer videos but I'm not familiar enough with the communication to argue enough.

Use the red tracker from time to time and you can always find rioters talking about game issues including the recent "gameplay thoughts" threads which we tend to see multiple times each week, and that's only the forums.

There are also dev blogs, reddit amas, and videos about specific changes. Overall Riot has much more communication than Blizzard

When I played Overwatch I was actually very disappointed with Blizzard's level of communication about issues the players faced and found that they were very slow to address issues.
