You do need to communicate for some things
Just don't get things mixed up. You need to communicate sufficiently. That does not mean you must receive agreement. That means that I have to suck it up a bit if my team's bot goes MF which i hate. And the team have to suck it up if I go Bard, which i like. and the team needs to suck it up if i start roaming in the mid game and get the jungler a bunch of kills.
you're right about the team having to be balanced in terms of the qualities that exist in it i.e. forcefull front line, pick skills, kite skills, damage output, aoe etc.
but the idea that each role brings exactly a specific set of qualities isn't very good as a gameplay concept. for instance lets say top lane likes to play assassins (well, everybody does). mid should not be able to say "actually it's mid's role to play the assassin and jgl can do it too and since we both want to play those you should stick to poppy and maokai".
EDIT: from the perspective of the dedicated mid player it makes sense to make things "stiff" like that he gets to have "the meta" make the other guy play the front line all the time while he sticks to his favorite glass cannons. but the guy playing top lane has an interest in the mid laner having to also adjust pick.
