-sigh- I went scrolling through the comments asap to see if I got to say it, but you beat me to the punchline. Take my upvote you filthy animal. :(

On that note, Garen spins longer so he's definitely the better beyblade.

Garen is a beginner champion meant for low-elo. He takes almost no skill whatsoever, so he's great for introducing people to Juggernaunts.

He's terrible in higher elo because they know how to kite, and Garen is useless when the enemy is competent enough to kite and CC him.

He's not meant to be played in high elo. If a simple champion like Garen or Amumu is being played in high elo the LCS, they are supremely overpowered and need nerfs.

Darius is the higher-elo Juggernaut. He's meant to be what the beginners move up to when they learn the basics of their duty as a Juggernaut.

So, there is NO reason to pick Garen over Darius. Unless you're really, REALLY good at him. Even then, it would be better to learn Darius.

Though to be fair, Darius's weakness is also kiting and CC, but he has more answers to that other than just running at the enemy and hoping he hits them.

dominusx5 votes

amumu is fine in every elo. braindead tank with aoe cc and dmg.

Zarvanis13 votes

Let me rephrase that...

If you see Amumu in PRO PLAY, he needs to be nerfed into oblivion.

Funny how pros have been playing easy safe and consistent champions forever. There is a reason why Malz with his point click ult, Syndra with a point click Ult, and Mao'kai with his super simple kit are played at the highest tier of play. Because they are safe and you can't miss their most important abilities.

If Garen didn't have obvious weaknesses he would be played at the highest level. The fact that these champions are simple isn't keeping them from being in pro play or high elo. If you are good enough anything can be played in soloq.

This entire argument is stupid. Some champs are just stronger than others and it has nothing to do with how hard they are to play. It is about how current items, game changes, and play patters effect them.

If garen requires no skill, then why are there hardstuck bronze and silver Garen mains and there are high diamond Garen mains

Dreadlocks68 votes

Garens skill comes from decision making, no real mechanics to master on him.. not even a skill shot.

TotalJerk2 votes

To be fair he has an auto reset and manually canceling his E after the last tick is faster than letting it run out.

Just because you play an easy champion, it doesn't mean you can't climb or you must climb with it. Decision making goes a long way.

Tempist5 votes

This is a bit off topic, but champions like Garen provide a really interesting look at the difference in balancing philosophies between League and Dota2.

In League they try and balance the game for all elos, which means that obviously some champions suffer. For example, Garen works in Bronze but never Challenger.

In Dota2 all champions are balanced around the highest levels of play. So pretty much everything is at least situationally viable. The upside is that pro matches and games are much more exciting, dynamic, and offer far more variety than League could ever hope to have. The downside is that in low elo certain champs dominate.

Should League do the same, I imagine pro game viewership would skyrocket, and Bronze would be full of 60%+ winrate Garens. And when they inevitably complain, the answer is basically "git gud."

Silence, and damage reduction. Garen is more defensive and damn tough, compared to darius who is also tough, but is more offensive oriented. Also, Garen has Armor shred, and unlike Darius, that makes the enemy vulnerable for all while Darius's E Passive is just benefit's himself

MagikarpIsBoss2 votes

Darius technically has armor shred that synergizes very well with his kit. By this I mean BC because this is pretty much always going to be one of your first items.

However, Garen has it off of the bat so I guess his is better, and it also probably stacks with BC.

Because Garen is very fun, regardless of how useless he may be in most scenarios. Also, there really anything more satisfying than ulting the villain.

JerulEon6 votes

I'll give the legitimate reason other than the dumb "he's an easier champion" argument. I play Garen over Darius because Garen can split push more effectively and if he gets the right flank on the villain, can quickly kill them in a teamfight, swinging the favor immediately into your team's favor. Garen has faster waveclear mid game and self speed buff to push side lanes and roam better. In teamfights, obviously Darius has an easier time running head first and getting multi-person Q's while using two types of CC. You can't play Garen like Darius. You try to flank and go for vulnerable targets/villain. Once you assassinate the villain, you either clean up the fight by going for the next villain or go split push with passive HP regen.

In conclusion: Darius brute force teamfights and shit. Garen splits, roams, assasinate (have access to single target true damage nuke without prep) villains. Granted, Darius can do all of these things, but Garen is more well-rounded.

Although Darius is essentially a better version of Garen, Garen is more accessible to new players. He doesn't require as much mechanical skill, and even has a passive that encourages csing.

So, why pick Garen over Darius? To learn the fundamentals of the Juggernaut class with a straight-forward, easy to learn champ.

Provide a reason why?

Provide a reason why?

why what?

Garen has a sustain passive Garen shreds armor Garen can overcome his lack of gapcloser Garen doesn't have mana problems Garen is generally better for attrition Garen has a silence Garen has a %hp execute Garen has a defensive steroid Garen has a higher winrate than Darius by 2-3% Garen deals a higher percentage of alternate damage types

Garen: magic = 20-25% True damage = 10-15% physical = 65-70%

Darius:

magic = less than 5% True damage = around 20% physical 75-85%

While True damage is nice garen gets something like up to like 10% more not physical damage on some scenarios which will typically involve a lot of armor where darius is just forced to deal with it.

Dextix LT3 votes

Garen has a sustain passive

Shuts down if hit by anything.... While Darius easily regains his hp with his q.

Garen shreds armor

??????????????

Garen can overcome his lack of gapcloser

??????????????????????????????????

Garen doesn't have mana problems

Yea, because Darius certainly does /s

Garen is generally better for attrition

Nope, passive disabled by any poke, so nope. And darius still has his q which gives him hp.

Garen has a silence

Aaaaand? For him to even get close to apply it is a chalenge...

Garen has a %hp execute

Which is magic damage (Besides one target who is true damage) and is only effective against tanks if we want to count %hp.

Darius on the other hand ALWAYS gets true damage that always increases based on his bleed stacks, does far more damage than garens excecute (Unless vs tanks) and also can reset itself...

Garen has a higher winrate than Darius by 2-3%

Winrate on its own matters shit as a statistic.

Garen deals a higher percentage of alternate damage types

He deals physical with all of his abilities besides ultimate. Yes, he deals more magic than darius because Darius does NO magic damage. But that alone is ot a reason to pick him over darius.

Furthermore, this ignores Darius having innate armor penetration and one of his main core items is an armor shred item.

RedWedding7 votes

First set of question marks:

Look up Garen's E. If he hits someone enough with it, say good-bye to their armor.

I believe they were referring to significant MS steroid and slow removal as a manner to overcome the lack of gap-closer, in answer to your second (more emphatic) set of question marks.

Lastly, I believe their original point is that, since Darius cannot provide all the things Garen provides, he is, by definition, NOT a better version of Garen. If he was, he'd do all the same things Garen does (which, as has been established, he doesn't) only better.

EDIT: Yeah, his passive is disabled by poke, but it also resets in 4 seconds. Still great for attrition.

Dextix LT1 votes

25% is not "say-goodbye" and it is only effective against tanks mostly. Also it reuires for 4 procs, which, until lategame, is most likely not gonna happen.

And refering to his q as something to "overcome the lack of gap-closer" is simply silly. Because you need to choose whether to use it for a ms boost or for a slow removal. It is a simple speed boost, not that usefull against most enemies.

And im sorry, but Darius does provide all of the thing garen does but better. IT does not matter if the skills are not the same. THey occupy the same slot in a team, and in a team a Darius is a more usefull addition than garen due to him having better tools.

Also, his passive is like that only in lategame, where that matters far less than in laning phase. In laning phase it is 9 seconds, which is quite a lot.

RedWedding1 votes

I was just trying to answer some of the questions originally posed by your previous comment. I presented another's arguments while not necessarily supporting them.

Darius fits the same slot as Garen, yes, but he literally does not provide everything Garen can provide. Namely, armor shred and flat damage reduction. Garen is tankier, and his sustain is better at sieging. If you have a heavy AD team, he also brings teamfight utility beyond personal damage.

I'd agree that Darius is generally better than Garen in that slot, but he isn't a strictly better version of the character.

And im sorry, but Darius does provide all of the thing garen does but better

This is incorrect. See flat damage reduction and armor shred. Since Darius does not do these things, he, by definition, does not provide all of the things Garen does. Generally, people will like the higher damage output and teamfight sustain that Darius brings, and prefer Darius as their bruiser top laner over Garen, but that does not mean that he is a better verion of Garen. Similar, but different.

Nasus

i dont see that as an argument tbh. a champion shouldnt be deliberately kept weak or without options for mastery, to be accessable to new players. and i dont think thats how riot operates.

they have made a bunch of champions that are easy to pick up and difficult to master. the new Warwick would be a great example of a champion who is quite easy to pick up, but has enough tools in his kit that allow for some situational tricks to outplay his opponent. (q behind the enemy, release fear to push him into the direction of your teammates. stick to the enemy with q to follow flash. the whole "do i want to fear now, or do i want to have the damage reduction?").

MasterYi would be another prime example.

i think they need to give garen some options back that he used to have for people who were practised on him.

animation canceling his q, and even the last 0.5 seconds of his spin used to play a big role in how you where able to perform on him. they took away some options for mastery that he already had.

both are juggernauts.

garen doesnt have a tank kit. no aoe cc, no hard initiate or heavy peel. hes all defense and damage in melee, with nothing but a mediocre speed buff.

compare to Taric or Nautilus who are tanks. they deal little damage, are extremely tanky and have tools to protect their teammates, or initiate fights.

JoeMG1 votes

Ah ok thanks. He just seems more inherently tanky. Maybe because of his passive.

"tanky" depends on the situation.

garen has more upfront defense than darius. he has 30% damage reduction on his w active and bonus resistances on the w passive.

but darius has a way to regain health in combat. depending on if darius keeps hitting his q on opponents in fights to regain health, he can be much harder to kill than garen.

Seriously though, at a higher level there isn't much of a reason to pick Garen over Darius. He offers some things over Darius such as higher sustain and a more reliable execute, but overall Darius is better if you can consistently land Q, don't spam until you are OOM, and know how to judge if your ult will kill a target.

In other words, Garen is an easier, simpler, and more brute force version of Darius.

Joseraph2 votes

Garen is tankier, has better flanks, roams, a more reliable sustain, no mana management, and is more satisfying to pull off(in my opinion). There's something really satisfying about screaming "JUSTICE" and watching the screen ripple as you utterly annihilate someone at the atomic level, with no regards to the laws of physics

Garen counters some champions that Darius does not. He even counters some that Darius does but even better. Renekton being the best example. Only real biggest reason to pick Garen at this point is counter picking. Not much most champions can do to a very fed Garen mowing them down.

garen doesnt counter renekton. the matchup is pretty even. it comes down to renekton cancelling decisive strike with the stun on his w.
