The Secret to Winning in Bronze? Don't Die

Yeah, I know, I'm Bronze V. Whatever. The point still stands. In bronze, it's guaranteed that people are going to die... a lot. More than they really should. So by not dying you're already better than them. Look at almost any bronze player's stats on OP.GG and you'll see what I'm talking about. Ignore the win rates and look at their KDAs. When you're averaging 10+ deaths per match with your most played champions, how can you honestly expect to be consistent enough to climb your way out of bronze?

Despite being Bronze V, this is the one thing I pride myself on, that keeps me semi-positive, rather than just beating myself to a pulp like I'm the main character of Fight Club or something. Simply put, I tend not to die stupid deaths, and just not to die period. Going down the list of my 7 most played champions, my per game averages are 3.6, 4.9, 5.2, 3.8, 4.8, 6.4, 7.2. Compare that to this guy, chosen at random from one of my recent matches. 8.6, 9.4, 5.5, 9.2, 6.9, 11.2, 6.8.

To me, anything over 5 deaths is getting to be excessive, unless you're a support and sacrificing yourself for the sake of kills (ex. 0/8/23), and double digits is feeding, plain and simple. And this is why I hate to let anyone else go top lane besides me. Up there, you're on an island fighting 1v1, meaning if you mess up you're often on your own. With bot lane you have a buddy (plus the jungler) to help you out. With mid lane, your jungler and bot lane are right around the corner, so to speak, if you're in need of help. But top lane is everyone else's last priority, generally speaking, and so if you don't know how to play smart and safe, 0/3 is liable to turn into 0/6, and that's usually what happens to the top laners I play with when they start struggling. If someone else isn't there to cover their butt immediately, it's all downhill from there.

I think this is because bronze players just want to be the ones getting all the kills, and so they'll be like the Xin Zhao top I had one match who fed all match and never once bought a single defensive item. Plus there's no patience. If I need to sacrifice a little CS until I have my ignite and ult up for an all-in guaranteed kill, so be it. But I'll often see people on my teams going ham on an enemy who's levels above them and at nearly full health. Yeah, it's gonna end differently this time than the last couple.

So, yeah... in short, simply staying alive will do wonders for your game. For proof, look at my stats for season 4 compared to season 5. I'm still bronze, but the improvement is undeniable. And all it took was dying less and warding/CSing more. Those three things alone are enough for you to become a more reliable, consistent, and just all around better player. I honestly think I'd be as high as B2 right now... if I were only more flexible, which is why I've been spending nearly all my time broadening my champion pool. Top lane and jungle aren't my problem. It's the other roles that I've been needing to improve on.

I don't think the simple "don't die" is sufficient.

Comparing 0-1-1 to 10-6-8, I'd take the second anyday.

It's more or less about KDA.

Again, that much is obvious. None of the popular tips for climbing out of bronze are quite that simple. I could place 20+ wards in 20 minutes, but if they're not in places that give me valuable vision, then it's not gonna do me any good. I could CS a ton, but if I'm ignoring my team to do so, then that's not going to do me any good either. If you want to get more specific, let's put it this way: don't feed and know the difference between a good fight and a bad fight.

You have to remember things are different in bronze. A lot of people in bronze care a lot about the K and not the D. The A doesn't exist in bronze. Going 20/20/12 or something is not rare. Going 24/3/10 and still losing is not rare either.

Although I think the OP is talking about those occasions nearly every game where top or mid goes 0/7 in 15 minutes because they tried too hard to get a kill at lv 2 and turned their lane opponent into a monster.

If you're surviving by not participating in team fights then you're actually screwing your team over and there's no way you can win. Dying isn't the worst thing in the world as long as you're doing your job on your team.

That goes without saying. That's why I brought up my 0/8/23 Nautilus match. Sure, I died 8 times, but I helped set up 23 kills. I don't just say "oh, a team fight. Excuse me while I run the other way." What I'm talking about is the attitude bronze players have, which has them raging at you because you didn't follow them into an obvious bait that ended up a 1v4. "No help," they say. Stuff like that. On some occasions, I might play things a tad too safe, but generally it's just a matter of knowing what's a good fight and what's not, which seems to be beyond most bronze players.

As silly as it sounds, yeah, focusing on staying alive and farming instead of tryharding to get kills will generally net you a far better advantage, add good ward coverage to that and you're basically on your road to silver-gold.

It's the needless deaths that happen in bronze. People roam randomly looking for a fight when they should be in lane farming. Deaths that have purpose (TF, dragon, objectives) aren't bad deaths.

Precisely. That's part of what I was trying to get at with the second half of my post. If you're a tank or support, or anyone for that matter, and your deaths result in net gains, whether it be assists or objectives, then great. But when I check the stats of most of the people I play with, their stats don't really reflect that, as the KDAs tend to hover around 1. Sure, your KDA is not the most important stat, but unless all those deaths were for objectives, just barely surpassing a KDA of 1 with a champion in over 50 matches just isn't cutting it, in my opinion. When I play, I try to make my deaths matter. It's why I average about as many assists as kills with my mains. And I always go for objectives, or work to save them, when I have the chance. Other bronze players, though, tend to take the "you need to carry" advice to its extreme by suiciding for kills and objectives. Stopping that is key to winning matches, as I've had plenty a match thrown by teammates who started doing just that when we were ahead, thinking they were unbeatable.

Try telling that to all the people who complain that their team was too heavy for them to carry when they went 20/18.

Not dying in lane is my first priority. Then comes farming and poking. I constantly make sure im not in a position to be ganked and i dont play over aggressive. I find that sometimes annoys the enemy laner. It forces them to do stupid things like turret dive when he/she has no business doing so. When it comes to team fights just ping me and i will be there.
