PSA: If someone asks to NOT get a certain role

WutsKraken··161 votes·13,500 views

You probably don't want to force them into it.

Case and point: Last game I was forced into ADC, I asked to not get it, I offered to switch because I am very comfortable playing a tanky CC support like Blitzcrank Alistar or Nautilus, I am very comfortable in the jungle and both solo lanes no matter what I need to pick. I am not comfortable as an ADC, the role that carries the most weight in the late-game teamfights yet can die in a heartbeat, especially since the enemy could easily pick a dive comp. They did indeed pick a dive comp to annihilate me and our Lux and a pokey/sustain lane bot to zone away me and Blitzcrank to ensure the enemy Jinx got a CS advantage

Guess who received all the blame when Malphite ulted the entire team and Talon dove me straight away? Guess who received the blame when our CC'less top laner couldn't stop a teleporting Malphite while he himself never teleported to dragon fights, guess who received the blame for being zoned by the enemy because our own jungler was invaded by Shyvana with 0 help from top and mid lane? Guess who received the blame when our Lux just barely missed her critical light binding that would've saved both our lives?

Guess who was told to uninstall/commit suicide/never play ranked again/deserved to be bronzeV by their own team

Me

Yes, you should have a GENERAL idea of how to play each role in ranked, but everyone has preferences and if you place a jungle main against an occasional jungler, or an ADC main vs a occasional ADC, then you're gonna run into problems

Not justifying them blaming you, but we'll always have to deal with our worst role.

Though to anyone who starts mocking someone for playing bad in a role they are bad in: THANK YOU CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!!!

Pretty much this. I am good with 4 of the 5 roles in the game, but when I get jungle it is like a blooper reel of bad ganks.

Does my team sympathize with this, even when I state "will try my best guys, but I'm not very good with ganks" but it only takes one time ganking and not somehow getting a pentakill (ganking just one person) and all of the sudden I hear how terrible I am for the next 25-30 minutes.

"I'm not so great at jungling guys" "This guy is the most shit jungler ever. uninstall scrub" "Well I DID tell you I was bad at jungling in champ select" "go die" "uh <_<"

As a bad jungle player , I can tell you Xin Zhao is a bless for us! xD

Just get the krugs , then red and gank mid at level 2 with Q and E. If their mid lane pushes just a little bit , their flash won't make any difference, it will be a simple first blood :D

Overall, I play Xin for the early game pressure , that almost everyone forgets how powerful it is.

I admit he is not that skilled and fun , but his decisions actually are the most important factors, making the difference between a snowballing game and a normal one.

This. Diana too, if you need an AP.

Anu3isII3 votes

I love Diana too , but my problem with her is that my allies tend to feed until I get level 6 ( which is fast ).

Then they complain if I don't gank them and blame me for losing the game...

With Xin I know I will be everywhere , and people will know that I have done everything I could for them.

With Diana I get ahead of everyone , but with Xin I make my team get ahead and I can gank every possible treat with ease.

FlashnFuse3 votes

as a Diana main, I can tell you that her pre-6 ganks are awful unless an enemy laner is dryhumping your turret. My strategy with Diana on my first back is to get some wards (2 greens and a pink, gives me 3 total greens after trinket) and sprinkle some wards around the mid lane. Diana brings a lot of power to counter ganks and with good ward coverage you can ping your team to safety or countergank to win a 2v2.

Anu3isII2 votes

That is a good idea! I usually buy pink wards for the top-mid lane river and wait for my trinket upgrade , but sacrificing more gold for the safety of my mid laner may be a better choice if I don't trust him/her totally.

Can I ask you , how do you do in Baron/Dragon fights with her. I found it problematic that my top lane is the only tank of my team most of the times , and he/she will come (by teleport) after the fight starts. What should I do as a Diana?

FlashnFuse2 votes

Make sure you have wards to see where the enemy team is coming from. If you see their jungler posturing for a baron steal, jump on them and kill them, then walk back to baron pit. It's pretty easy to predict where they're gonna stand to pull off a gapcloser smite steal. Same thing with dragon.

Don't try to force a bad fight if your team is behind, Diana is really good at quickly picking off carries, splitpushing and 1v1 dueling.

This is my build for Diana that i rarely stray from: http://imgur.com/CPk7ORb Gives you good stats for an AP bruiser. I use Atkspeed Marks, Armor Seals, Flat AP glyphs, and 1 Atkspeed Quint with 2 AP quints.

Wind Whistler2 votes

Just pick Warwick or Cho'Gath and farm. Don't bother with ganking if you suck at it. You'll still probably get flamed, but atleast you'll have more gold.

For this season perhaps, but not always. I, for one, welcome Ranked Teambuilder Draft.

Ranked Teambuilder Draft.

It's happening?!?!!? Where did you learn this? Can I have a source?

Popular theory is that the "new feature" they want to test at their office and on the PBE is Teambuilder Draft / Ranked Teambuilder Draft.

Anu3isII1 votes

It would be a good choice only if Riot encourages people to play supports.

Despite of the great advantages team builder offers, most of the forming teams need a support , which is for many people the "worst" role to play , because they want to "carry".

If supports aren't put in the spotlight at least once , this mode will be as underrated as the normal team builder.

I personally would find it great , but I don't really like to play the same role over and over again , just because I'm a bad jungler :/

DrCyanide4 votes

You don't understand the support position if you think the reason it's underplayed in Teambuilder is because it's less valued.

The reason that supports don't play Teambuilder is that Teambuilder makes their lifes harder. A good support will pick their champion based on what their ADC and their team needs, a selfless act in it's own way. Teambuilder forces them to be selfish, trying to pick a champion that might fit a team comp and might not, but for what purpose? They could play any other queue and be able to pick the champion they want to help the team the most, rather than mindlessly dodging Teambuilder groups trying to find good synergy.

Support Mains will be among the first to migrate out of Teambuilder to Teambuilder Draft, of that I'm certain. If the original Teambuilder is available along side Draft, then expect even longer queue times.

Zwill's comment should clean details on the ranked teambuilder, like needing to pick two roles.

Anu3isII1 votes

Oh , thanks! I didn't think from that perspective... and I'm sorry if I offended support mains ...

It Hertz When IP1 votes

You didn't. Personally I gravitate towards TB because (at least at my elo) draft and blind pick are staffed with trollers, retards, and those bastards who say nothing and just autolock champions. As a support in TB, my wait time to find a team is usually under fifteen seconds, so if I get in a lobby and it's an ADC I don't mix well with, I just requeue. Is that selfish? probably.

Anu3isII1 votes

Not really selfish , I mean... I would do the same if I were you xD

elon wątroba1 votes

There will be no problem with supports, at least on medium-high elo. There are shitloads of support mains.

Anu3isII1 votes

Yeah , there are many ! My problem was the fact that not too many support players play the normal Teambuilder mode.

Dr.Cyanide showed some ideas how the draft mode of Teambuilder will be , and they are pretty helpful for the support players , allowing them to synergy with their team and ,eventually , not dodge the game.

Hijacking the top comment here:

It was pointed out earlier in this conversation, but Lyte detailed some of how Ranked Teambuilder will work in an Ask.fm post awhile back. My personal opinion is that this will go a long way towards alleviating some of the pain you, and other players, are currently encountering in ranked pre-game (and the resultant game).

Here's a link to the reddit thread discussing it, and I'll also copy-pastarino the relevant parts below:

Our main design philosophy of the new Champ Select was to retain as much of the player behavior benefits as possible, while drastically reducing queue times. We also wanted to retain the strategic elements of drafting. This philosophy led to us to getting rid of the "Captain's Mode" where you can accept or decline potential teammates, getting rid of mirror matches, and no longer asking players to choose a Champ prior to Champ Select. The new Champ Select flow is now:

  1. Players can invite friends into a Lobby.
  2. Each player is required to select at least 2 Positions (such as Top/Mid, or Mid/Jungle). On average, Ranked players only play 2.2 positions, so we wanted to start simple with a Pick-2 design, but have some backups like rank-sorting all 5 positions if there are queue time issues. We also have designs to incentivize mastering all positions in the future.
  3. There's a new position called "Fill."
  4. We're currently asking Duo Queues to cover at least 3 unique positions, to further improve queue times. Duo Queues will still have a higher chance of getting the exact 2 positions they want, but it is not 100% guaranteed.
  5. Once you've chosen your positions, we match you into a full team and you enter Champion Select.
  6. We've made some changes to how drafting works; however, we'll be talking more about this in a future design blog.
  7. During Champ Select, you can still negotiate with your teammates to lane swap or trade champs if you want a more favorable match-up just like Champ Select today.
  8. Once drafting is done, your team enters the game.

I hope this answer helps!

Anu3isII3 votes

Thank you for your answer :D

Though , as a question , do you plan on making a spotlight for the supports? I mean... supports are the most underrated role , and I believe you can open players' eyes to see how important the supports really are and how difficult it actually is to be one of them.

toxıc sIut7 votes

As a devout jungler, just deal with it. There's gonna be a constant seesaw of players saying "supports are bad and useless" and "supports are godsends and dont fucking tell them anything constructive even if they play bad because they are perfect human beings". Ignore all of it, nothing good comes from either side and there's never equilibrium.

Akeydel3 votes

Boy i wonder which side you tend to be biased against? The one with 5 words or the one with 21 words that misuses the word 'constructive'?

toxıc sIut2 votes

How did I misuse constructive? If someone's playing bad, and you tell them a way to improve, that's useful and/or helpful to the player, which is what constructive means. And I'm saying that gets ignored, which often it does when support-lavishing is the craze.

I still think both are stupid and I'm not weighted to either in particular. The second example is just more specific.

Chromatic Eagle3 votes

To be fair, whenever someone tries to be "constructive", it either ends up being passive aggressive, or just "stop being bad".

can there be a ranked draft pick still i hate teambuilder

Why do you think you will prefer our current system over the proposed ranked team builder? Genuinely curious.

Joe Dredd1 votes

It just seems to flow better in my opinion.

OneSmoothDude1 votes

I'm really, really not meaning to be a dick here. But can you please elaborate?

Joe Dredd1 votes

To be honest I think people should be forced out of their comfort zone every once in a while

OneSmoothDude1 votes

Fair enough. I agree that there is certainly something lost in not needing to learn every role at least to the point of proficiency anymore.

SociopathFriend13 votes

That's how mains work- you pick 1 or 2, sometimes 3 roles and get very good with them. By proxy you're not going to be as good in the other 2 remaining roles. I main Mid and Support and think I do very well at both. I am a good Top and tolerable Adc. I am shite at Jungle.

So when given the chance I ask not to Adc or Jungle- it's as much to help the team as it is to help me. My only way to cope: "No, you're Jungle" Malphite Warwick Fiddlesticks Nautilus "See you when I hit 6". "No, you're Adc." Ashe Caitlyn Sivir "Alright, I'm chicken as hell and am going nowhere near the enemy lane."

kaltenashes2 votes

i know that feeling, every time i had to go adc was against trist and i was last pick, i didnt trade at all and i missed a lot of cs..."you can blame me all you want, i'll just block you, hf"

DazedOnlooker2 votes

Both of these ^. I'm scary as hell when it comes to playing a role outside my comfort zone. I'm bad at cs'sing and since i play like a chicken my tower ends up being the first to go down but "hey guys!, at least i didn't feed my enemy laner too bad!" and by the end f the laning phase i'm like 0/1/0. but its k guys, i didn't feed even though im a terrebad ADC...i kind of just watched my lane crash and burn, i tend to roam a lot to cope/compensate. xD

Ipols10 votes

When I enter into a lobby I paste "Hey, I can fill but we are going to lose if I play adc"

Kitten of Evil8 votes

Yeah, everyone's going to be better at different roles and champions. You might be a Gold-level support, a Silver 1 mid, and a Bronze-level jungler.

So to all the people who say "you should learn how to do every role" I agree, but don't be surprised if people want to avoid the roles they are bad at. And if someone says "anything but ADC" it's probably because they are not as confident at ADC. If you force them into it, you deserve the result.

Matezoide7 votes

Wanna a hint?

If you cant ADC for shit and gets forced into the role, pick a melee with a gap closer or a burst mage instead.

Deep Terror Nami5 votes

I agree, but...are you certain the people who didn't take your role weren't just as bad at it as you were theirs? They may be in the same position you are.

For me, I got up to G1 solely with Nami; there were a few times I couldn't use her, but anyway the point is that I am at least Gold 1 skill with Nami, but have not been able to prove myself equally capable with others. There's simply no way for me to know if I am up to par in other roles without playing them in Ranked, which is more likely to get me back to Silver before I can be good enough with them. It's just not worth taking another role. I practice in Normals, but it's sometimes like beating up little kids and it's not going to go that way in Ranked.

TyroneWatermelon4 votes

Even in platinium, someone who asks everything except X 70% gets the X,trust me beside skill level nothing is different between all divisions

WutsKraken3 votes

Oh I know, lucky for me, most people want to carry with ADC

In the cases I'm forced to ADC, oh boy...the one game I won recently as ADC in ranked was my promos into Plat where their ADC was even worse than me

Seenan3 votes

Not to be rude, but you should have a grasp of every role before going into ranked. And I don't mean 'what to do', I mean rune/mastery pages available, mindset, all of that.

Don't think LC$ players solely play one role, tbh.

The only reason I ever get annoyed when I'm thrown into roles is when I can influence the game better as other roles. Even though I play a decent support/jung whenever I'm thrown into those (probably thrown into these the most...support, and either top/jung).

I could be a 0-1-24 Janna and would just barely win (team doesn't know how to focus or other factors) or carry the game with a 16-3 Annie or Ahri or something/win easier.

Akeydel10 votes

I think you've missed the point.

if you place a jungle main against an occasional jungler, or an ADC main vs a occasional ADC, then you're gonna run into problems

Even if you are capable of playing any role, there's a big difference between someone who mains a role: (knows every champion in every matchup at every point in the game, their own potential and their opponents, and how to abuse or play in any of the situations, perfecting their mechanics positioning and gamesense all around the one role or champ they play) and a someone who rarely plays a specific role, hasn't practiced it in a while, doesn't know the matchup, isn't totally comfortable with their champ, or has rusty mechanics.

MORE IMPORTANTLY it's not about your own reaction, the post discourages teammates flaming when someone doesn't perform well in the only role they requested to NOT play. It's unfair to react harshly to someone struggling with a situation YOU create.

But congratz on carrying, im sure your ranked 0-1-24 janna games are a real uphill battle.

Kaisha3 votes

Don't solo queue if you aren't prepared to play every role. Find 4(3) other friends and make a team. In solo you WILL have to play every lane, as every role. Get used to it, or get out.

Remlap122331 votes

And the winner of the "completely missing the entire fucking point" award goes to...

toxıc sIut2 votes

Sure he missed the point, but to be honest, he brings up a good point and something that even rioters talked about somewhat.

To be a good player you should be somewhat proficient in all roles. Yes, while having a weak role is perfectly fine, it should, in my opinion, hinder your ability to achieve a higher rank. And while auto-losing isn't fun for anyone, it beats the sort of everyone-wins mentality that is cropping up with the idea of teambuilder ranked.

This is my problem with ranked teambuilder. For example, I can pick jungle for my priority role and top for secondary, then just play whatever is meta/good at the time when I don't get my main role and have a good chance to win anyways.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

But in ranked teambuilder they are planning to reward playing multiple roles at least.

toxıc sIut2 votes

An LP bonus for diversifying what roles you play would be really awesome, and I hope they do something of the like.
