@Ghostcrawler -- Ranged auto attacks are boring.

Critkeeper··1 votes·471 views

There is nothing deep or interesting about a ranged targeted nuke that heals you and is on a 0.5 second cooldown with hardly any cast animation, which slows the enemy and may also speed you up, and does nearly a thousand damage and costs no resource.

From the point of view of game design, what good qualities do ranged auto attacks promote as is that cause them to be good for league of legends? How is instagib any worse than this? What choices do ranged auto attacks create, other than "stay away or die"?

Why are we defending it if it doesn't promote gameplay?

Consistently strong positioning requirements. The problem arises when positioning is no longer a requirement.

Gee it must be so much more difficult to position in such a way that keeps you safe and allows you to deal damage at the same time when you have a >600 range envelope in which to attack things.

That is so much harder than doing exactly the same thing but with only 125 range.

ranged champions have so many fewer options when they're out of position though... catch an adc out of position and the he's dead. catch a melee carry out of position and he's seriously hurt sometimes, scratched sometimes, rarely dead. They have abilities to get away quickly, to reposition, to not take damage, etc...

There's nothing wrong with the adc role.

It's compensated for by notoriously low defensive stats and base MS, as well as a lack of hard CC and usually no strong escape or chase mechanics.

If you're so biased against the ADC role, then just don't play it.

Ranged basic attacks serve the same purpose as targeted abilities, they bring reliable damage. Are they far too strong, causing any ranged AD champion to be pigeonholed into a squishy sustained damage role, and lowering the amount of variability in abilities? Absolutely. But they should stay in the game, just downplayed in importance.
