ELO Hell: It exists.

1 Wing··9 votes·2,300 views

I just made my way into gold rank, after spending all of season 3 just going from bronze to silver. My report is this: ELO Hell does exist; it's a real thing.

Riot proclaims that it doesn't. When a platinum, or diamond player goes down to check it out, they win all their games and moves out of it; thus there is no ELO Hell problem. But that's exactly the problem: platinum and diamond players smurf into bronze league, and then a silver or gold player is supposed to fight them there. So unless your team also has a smurf, then you're going to lose, and the system is going to force you into an even lower teir, or at least cause your ELO growth to slow, making you have to win more games, and that means fighting more dumb battles.

At lower teirs, you may as well just roll some dice, and let that decide the outcome. Roll a die: if it's over 3. you win the battle. What you actually do in the game, has almost no meaning. People say things like: If you play well every game, then eventually that will push you ahead." That's true, however the effect is akin to playing five games, and the rules are: "roll these five dice; you can raise one of them by 1. If three of them are about 3, you'll rank up." If you roll all ones--two enemy smurf games, critically bad player on your team, 2 DCs on your team, you lost a game in your frustration--then you'll be down a lot of points, and your ELO growth is lowered, so now you have to throw ten dice to progress. When you finally edge your way to victory in a teir, then you have to throw down 3 dice, and if you lose, "hey, just win 3 games in a row, and you can try it again!" Can you see how a problem can begin to exist, when you're effectively just throwing dice, and the more you lose, the more dice you have to throw to progress.

Look, I just made it to gold rank, okay: I am a gold player. If I was in bronze 3 right now, with the same number of games played, then I don't think I would get out. After making it to gold V, I played with a silver V player in a ranked game, where I had to play support as I was last pick. In that game, here's what I saw: jungler ganks bot; I ping a low health target as they retreat and jump on them, and afterwards the jungler says "I didn't know you were going to dive." Our mid lane is lost because our mid laner was watching top instead of the lane they're standing in. Later on, the enemy ADC tries to sneak through the bush to get behind our team, and they ran into me; I pinged the enemy adc, and have them pinned: my team--a quarter of a screen length away--does not care, and eventually the enemy ADC killed everyone on my team. So you see, your individual skill as a player is not the deciding factor in a game: you can make the right plays, and your team just will not follow up on it. Yes, the enemy team played better, and I agree, they're the better team: but that does not mean I, personally, am a bad player. Unfotunatly, the ELO rating system thinks that means I am a bad player, and belong in bronze league, forever.

When I made it to silver I, I then proceeded to drop only one game: winning every other game up to gold teir. Finally players play rationally, and my ability to play well actually impacts the game now. Simply not losing my lane, means something in the game.

How the game plays in silver I, is probably how Riot assumes the game plays in bronze league--only there should be worse mechanics there. It's not. Bronze III is basically about "which team has a DC on it; that team losses." I got really good at playing 4v5 in bronze III. If your team is equally as good as the enemy team, but one of your players permanently disconnects ten minutes in, then you're going to lose. Bronze league is no way a test the skill of a playerl: it's a test to see if all the computers are working. Even in silver IV, you still see players disconnecting regularly. Can you imagine what bronze V is like then, Riot? No, you can't: the horrors are unimaginable.

What's needed is a wood league, so all the players that disconnect every other game, will get dropped down into it, and stop impacting the game. By bronze III, there should be a 99% player connection rate, so some test of skill at least begin to happen. As it is now, the entire teir of bronze league is a hell of bad issues that simply should not be deciding player ranking: smurf players, so many players with connection problems, just really really bad players. Yes, bad players should be at the lowest ranking, but you still have to play with them, even at silver IV. In bronze V -> silver III, the deciding factor is: which team has the worst player. Then: which side has a smurf. Then: how well does an individual player play? If you're a silver or gold player at heart, then you're just going to get trumped again and again in bronze league, and it will take an entire season to get to see some genuine competition, and that's no way for the world's most popular game to be played.

I'm in it right now. Trust me, I know. I actually started out after my provisionals at Silver V, and got dragged down to Bronze IV. I thankfully managed to move up to Bronze III recently, but that was a streak of good games. The last two games I've played while my shield is active for Bronze III were horrendous and things aren't looking good.

You're not in it, you just got lucky placements into Silver 5, like a TON of people get. That's why it's the higher populated tier.

You weren't actually Silver and dropped right the fuck out of that bracket.

Should have just not played and taken the Silver border like everyone else that gets placed there.

Complete bullshit. I got placed in Silver 5 and proceeded on a 20 game losing streak without being demoted.

This system is absolute garbage.

  1. I was bronze 5 and climbed out on my own, without duoing...multiple times, each without having an mmr significantly above my ladder ranking.
  2. claiming that elo hell does not exist also claims that elo boosting does not exist.

Overall, there is a fair bit of ambiguity surrounding the term "Elo Hell", let me clear some things up:

what people think:

A place where your games are filled with trolls and afks, and you can never win enough games consistently to climb out.

what it actually is:

A disconnect between skill level and ladder placement. (When the player is not consistently playing at a level good enough to climb to the desired rank)

Some Things to Consider:

  • If you truly belong at a given ranking, you will end up there, given enough games.
  • ladder ranking, mmr, and player skill level are all very different things. For example, say I'm a gold level player with a platinum ladder ranking. Over time, unless I improve to a platinum level, my mmr will tank, and my ladder ranking will fall, until I reach a state of equilibrium where skill = ranking.

MMR: where the system sees you, when compared to every other player in the system. Skill Level: Mechanics + Game Sense + Crisis Management Ladder Ranking: An attempt to graphically display MMR (this is not an accurate representation of skill)

Good, now that we understand some things, allow me to rationalize my claim:

The 'Elo Hell' falacy definition claims that there is a place where everyone you play with is a troll, feeder, afker, and so on. Therefore, we expect to see 9/10 players in the lobby to be of this kind (1/10 not, because that is you).

4/10 of those players are on your team, and 5/10 of those players are on the opposing team, leaving the remaining 1/10 on your team (it's you).

Assuming you are clearly better than these trolls, if we give a "win score" of 1 to the trolls and a win score of 2 to you, your team will have a WS of 6, while the opposing team only has 5. Let's say the win score correlates to % chance of winning the game. This shows that if you play consistently well, you will do nothing but climb.

Putting it another way, there is a 5/10 chance of the opposing team to receive a troll, but a 4/10 chance for your team, making your team the less likely team to receive a troll/toxic/careless player. In this case, you still have the better probability of winning (assuming you are better than these players).

Simply put, if you wish to climb to silver, you must be able to consistently play slightly better than a silver player (or know how to beat a silver player). To remain in silver, you must play at a silver level. This is held constant as you climb.

I can go further, but let me assure you, "Elo Hell" is nothing but a place where you are not playing at a level high enough to climb the ladder. Other people should not control the decisions you make during your game. Want to climb through silver? play a strong split pusher, win your lane, get fed, and stay top lane. Lead your team through team chat (you're allowed to type in paragraphs in-game), and if you truly belong in a higher division/tier, you will eventually get there.

But this isn't true, okay: this just isn't true.

First off, I don't know how you could climb from bronze V multiple times: I don't think I could get that low now if I tried. Second, I had to deal with being stuck in bronze, last season, where I would only go up literally a few points for a win, so I just kept having to deal with bronze nightmares over and over and over again.

The issue is: at lower teirs, your own play ability is dwarfed by the bad plays being made around you, as I did last season. As I advanced up teirs, winning games has actually become easier, not harder, because of all the bad plays made in bronze; it's just random there. Yes, over many games, a competent player will get out, but you're not getting out the same way you improve at higher teirs--by getting CS, by trading well, by attaining good position, etc. It can be an effect of "the team with two disconnects loses the game." Players do dumb things, and that can offset the good things you're bringing in.

What needs to happen is for plays who disconnect, to not show up in upper bronze league play. To get out of bronze league, you should have a "battle of skill" with other bronze leaguers, not "just show up, and you're gaming the system an advantage because only 4 players can fuck up on your team and 5 on the other team." There should be a factor of skill needed beyond that: right now there isn't really. You can get out just by luck even. You can't "just show up" to a platinum II game and win. Currently, at bronze I, you can still go up against bronze V players, and your promo game could be decided by a disconnect, and you're forced back down. No one wants a best of five decided by a disconnect, or a troll, and ridiculously bad players still shouldn't be in the competition pool at the top of bronze teir.

Another issue, I feel, is that there's so many players. This would be less of an issue if there were only a thousand players. Just too many players play this game, and that means there's just a wild amount of skill deferential in the places where the most number of players are.

tTops1 votes

multiple accounts.

Only thing I will say to the whole "bronze v players drag you down" is this:

You can 1v5 easy/intermediate bots in custom games without any trouble at all, and even if it's a 5v5 where your team is feeding, most of the time bronze players don't understand the flow of the game, build paths, rotations, positioning, any of that. Quite frankly, 1v5ing a bronze team is not much different than 1v5ing intermediate bots.

Just remember, just because your team mates start a bad play, doesn't mean you need to be a part of it; split push.

claiming that elo hell does not exist also claims that elo boosting does not exist.

I like most of your post and all, but the two aren't related. There are not enough boosters to create some sort of black hole of boosters that you just might get sucked into.

Boosted accounts lose FAST if they start playing after they get boosted. A Gold V player boosted to Diamond 5 will drop right the fuck back to Gold 5 within a week if they actually play. They wouldn't though, because they'd lose about 10 in a row and cut their losses.

tTops1 votes

i should have worded that better lol

What I meant to say is by claiming Elo hell exists, one claims that there is a certain point on the ladder where there's no way to climb up, which would mean a person of higher skill would not be able to play that account to get it out of "Elo hell".

Since there are people who can pretty much make a living boosting accounts from bronze to something much higher, well that basically tells us that "Elo Hell" is not a point or range on the ladder, but a state of mind.

I hope that cleared things up :P

The problem to me is that there are very few players who can outright dominate another team on their own in bronze, silver, or especially gold. To say that they are as bad as their division though is very presumptive. A player playing as silver level can totally get hosed by afks and feeders in bronze. Same thing for a gold player in silver. And if you are an adc or support you are heavily reliant on your lane mate so again you can get hosed. While most people who claim they are in elo hell are probably right where they belong, there is without a doubt going to be a tiny percentage of people who get screwed by their teams enough to perpetually keep them lower than they probably should be. No there are probably no diamon level players stuck in bronze, but I don't doubt there are silver players stuck in bronze or gold players stuck in silver.

AtheosisX4 votes

Here's the thing that I don't see anyone mention when this topic is brought up:

Statistics have outliers. So while most people claiming they are in elo hell probably just aren't very good, some people are going to be outliers who are genuinely screwed by their teams more than others. Now as more games are played this variance will naturally decrease, but some people are going to have more afks, dcs, feeders, and trolls than the rest. That's just the nature of things. So ultimately yes elo hell probably does exist, but it probably only exists for a very tiny percentage of players.

Long Dong Wukong1 votes

Elo hell can't actually exist. It's not just that there might be outliers actually in elo hell, it's simply that they pure and simple are not as good as they think they are and t hey can't beat the opponent that they're getting.

A Diamond can play in a match a Silver thinks is unwinnable and win without even breaking a sweat. Elo hell exists in the sense that you'll eventually get to the point where you aren't better than your opponents and you struggle to win, but that's the system working properly.

People aren't as good as they think they are the system is working properly, so they think there's a vortex of bad players that they're just stuck in. They just simply aren't good enough to win that particular match.

Your post shows a distinct lack of understanding of statistical variance. A diamond player will still lose if he has afks or multiple feeders on his team. Besides this isn't about the tiny percentage of players that are diamond or higher players who can 3v1 people of lower elos on a regular basis. This is about a silver player getting stuck in bronze or a gold player getting stuck in silver. It's going to happen due to statistical variance. Like I said it's not likely that it's common but I'm sure it does happen.

Long Dong Wukong1 votes

A diamond player will still lose if he has afks or multiple feeders on his team.

If you think a Diamond 1 can't win an "Elo hell" match in Bronze 1 with a 3v5 you got another thing coming friendo.

Besides this isn't about the tiny percentage of players that are diamond or higher players who can 3v1 people of lower elos on a regular basis.

Actually, it is. That's the entire point. There's no Elo hell. A better player will win the match. It's your personal hell because you aren't good enough to win at the MMR you have and are thus dropping. There's no hell, just the system working correctly and dropping you for not being able to win.

This is about a silver player getting stuck in bronze or a gold player getting stuck in silver.

A Bronze player being stuck in Bronze and a Silver player being stuck in Silver maybe. If you're in Silver and you feel like you play like a Gold, you just don't understand the game well enough to notice how much you're fucking up. So what if you have Gold mechanics? You don't have Gold knowledge or you would be able to get Gold.

It's going to happen due to statistical variance. Like I said it's not likely that it's common but I'm sure it does happen.

The actual percentage of people that legitimately get an afk/dc/intentional feeder EVERY match is some kind of bullshit like 1/500,000,000. There's probably like 3 people in the entirety of Leagues population that play in a literal Elo hell. Everyone likes to think that they're just getting picked on and it simply isn't the case.

I've also started noticing there's a high volume of Gold V's that are bitching about "Elo hell", and I think it's pretty funny that as soon as they hit slightly harder competition, there's suddenly a hell keeping them down. Yeah, k.

1 Wing2 votes

No, a problem is that: League of Legends, is a team game.

When I was stuck in hell, I was winning literally 100% of my lane match-ups. Doubling enemy cs; going 0 deaths. Yet I was only winning maybe 60% of my games, because the players I got on my team were so darn incompetent! It's a team game, and it's not just "you need to win" it's that "your team needs to win." Sometimes it doesn't matter how well you personally do. And when losing 2/3 games in a promo to some BS means you have to play another ten games to get another chance at a best of three: you can be stuck in there for a pretty long time.

Long Dong Wukong1 votes

When I was stuck in hell, I was winning literally 100% of my lane match-ups. Doubling enemy cs; going 0 deaths.

You needed to be shitting on the other team and taking objectives and denying the enemy objectives. Playing through the match on autopilot without forcing a win is why people are stuck in low Elo. It's apparently why you were stuck in Bronze, because you didn't know how to actually win.

it's not just "you need to win" it's that "your team needs to win."

At least you understand that. So go make your team win and stop thinking winning your lane means you did well. Your job is to make your team money and prevent the other team from making money.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how well you personally do.

It always matters how well you personally do. You're 100% of the difference between a close win and a close loss. You can think it's bullshit all you want, but you can easily be over 40% of your team's weight. If you stomp your lane/gank well/etc. and go around the map forcing objectives and making calls, you can contribute far more than your measly 1/5. In fact, if you plan to actually be good, you have to know how to contribute more. If you get fed and continue on autopilot and then OH NO your team starts losing, that's yourfault for losing that match, not your team's.

You honestly have no reason to have trouble in Bronze if you think you're good. If you have trouble in Bronze, then you just might not be as good as you think you are.

I've played Bronze 3 & 1 on my smurf, I don't think I lost a match, and I was doing like 90% of my team's work. It's not difficult, you just don't know how to do it (yet).

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

It's not just that there might be outliers actually in elo hell

There are, i guarantee it. with 27 million players daily then statistically speaking there is one poor bastard who never disconnects or dcs, but if you count the afks on his team vs the enemy has had 17 afks on his team with none on the opposing team.

Squirvizard2 votes

I think it's just players who lack the knowledge, mechanics, and/or not consistent enough to win game.

It's true, there's going to be bad players, but statistically, both teams should have the same amount of potential feeders, if not less, assuming you are better than your league/division.

It's possible you could get unlucky and have more feeders and whatnot, but it's possible for the enemy team to have them as well. You can make a huge impact on the game, however, if you know how to gain a lead, and use that lead to take objectives, and snowball the game. Heck, even try to be a team leader. (This may not work all the time however)

Arch Mage Magnus2 votes

Bronze should consist of 5 dice rolls a day with a 20 sider. If you are Bronze 5 you subtract 5 from your roll and so on until you eventually get lucky enough to make it out of bronze. Upon reaching silver you have the chance of using dice or playing the game. In Gold of above playing the game is necessary. Probably just saved about 10000 hours of your life.

1 Wing1 votes

Oh, but you wouldn't actually be playing, so. . .hmm, but it would be about as accurate, and much more time efficient. Hmm. .

Long Dong Wukong1 votes

Bronze 5 is so unbelievably bad that I could win 30 matches in a row with Urgot there. I couldn't even stay there if I was trying to lose.

If you're Bronze you belong there, same as any other tier. There is no hell, you just aren't better than the people you're playing against.

There's no luck involved except for hyper-high Elo where it's a matter of which team got the most mains in their preferred roles. Sometimes it'll be a team of all properly roled Challengers against a hodgepodge of mids going top and supports jungling, etc. and at that tier the mains destroy the non-mains.

This has been explained many, many times. Unless you are the one DCing then you have a better chance of getting the 4v5 to be in your favor.

1 Wing1 votes

The problem with "statistically" is that we don't have time to play 1000 games. You're only going to play a dozen games, and then your ranking starts becoming more and more fixed. You can flip a dozen coins, and have them all come up tails; statistically there's nothing too remarkable about that. So, if you play a dozen games with disconnects on your side--or even 6/12 and the other six don't have any DCs at all--then that's definitely very possible, and puts you at a serious disadvantage, that you may not be able to escape for months.

Yes, you can give yourself a statistical advantage, by showing up, but that doesn't inherently mean you'll win that game, and losing a few games has a serious impact on your ability to win future games. Ridiculously, we're all being expected to "just deal" with disconnects in a huge number of games.

To restate my post: Bronze III and above, should not be about "which team has an AFKer."

Konidias1 votes

This has been explained many, many times. Unless you are the one DCing then you have a better chance of getting the 4v5 to be in your favor.

That chance is incredibly marginal though. Considering there is a high probability that at least 1 of the 5 opposing players is also just like you and won't troll or d/c.

Then it's more like 50/50. Not to mention luck is not some sort of balanced system where the results even out over time. You could just get severely unlucky and get leavers 8 games out of 10, while some other guy might go 50 games without a single leaver.

If you believe that everyone is going to get the same amount of leavers in a huge span of games, then you have gambler's fallacy.

There is no force that is looking at your dozens of leaver games and then saying "hmmm, guess we should give him some non-leaver games now!" nope. You can just keep getting trolls and afkers, more than other players, and there's absolutely nothing that you can do about it.

Not at all.

You're invoking the Gambler's fallacy where it makes no sense. Consider a man who is playing a game of chance where he has an unfair advantage: he has a 3/4 chance to win a dollar and a 1/4 chance to lose a dollar. He plays 4 times and loses each time. He says, "Someone who believes in the Gambler's fallacy would keep playing at this point, believing that his chances of winning are even higher after the losses. I am no fool; I know that's not true. So I'll stop playing." The fact that his odds of winning haven't gone UP due to his 4 losses doesn't change the fact that his odds of winning are FANTASTIC and he should obviously keep playing.

A Silver-level player in Bronze III gets an intentional feeder, troll, or DC on his team 8 games in a row. Now he's in Bronze IV. What do I think his next 8 games will look like? Do I believe that there will be many more DCs on the enemy team in the near future? No. Do I believe that there will be the same slightly-higher chance of a DC on the enemy team in the near (and distant) future? Yes. That is the very definition of statistical independence.

That chance is incredibly marginal though. Considering there is a high probability that at least 1 of the 5 opposing players is also just like you and won't troll or d/c.

I won't go into why you can't arbitrarily do that when you're talking about probability. Anyone else, feel free.

I have been saying this for a while..... Smurfing creates a false positive of the elo and tier status. As these very good players from plat and so forth show that they can get through the grind over and over again. what does this do? Nothing, nothing for the players trying to find there true rank, nothing for the players looking to see where they need to improve, nothing for the ranked ladder. Smurfing should be frowned upon as it belittles the essence of sportsmanship and fairplay of a growing esports game.

Should smurfing accounts be removed? My answer Yes! Play your true accounts and man up or lady up to your level and compete.

Long Dong Wukong1 votes

Smurfs are a pretty rare occurrence when you're actually in Bronze or Silver because the population is so high, and smurfs VERY quickly start playing with people a full tier above their current tier. The account is Silver 3, but their MMR is all the way up to Gold 2.

It adjusts smurfs very quickly because they have abnormally high win rates so their MMR skyrockets. If you actually are a Bronze 3 and have Bronze 3 MMR, good luck playing with a smurf more than once every 200 matches. Smurf MMR's just aren't that low.

People think ELO hell is a place filled with trolls feeders afk that only get on your team ELO hell IS a place where trolls feeders and afks are in every game, no matter what team they're on. It's boring to play cause you cant improve when your bot lane is a combined 0/20 at 10 mins (something I've seen) or when the enemy jungler is 0/12 at 10 mins. Playing against players who can literally 1v5 you doesn't teach you anything, nor does being fed to the point of steamrolling every fight. ELO hell is not a place conducive to improvement; and that is the biggest issue

I don't feel like typing some long reply to this so i'll just tl;dr it to this : "elo hell" is simply your own personal hell. It's where you aren't better than your opponents anymore. And guess what that means? It's effectively placed you precisely at your appropriate skill level.

A better player can play the same matches that you think are unwinnable and win them pretty easily.

I'm also starting to find it interesting that almost everyone that is complaining about some form of Elo hell are Gold V. It's almost like they finally hit a wall where the people they're playing against aren't just absolute dirt and occasionally make good decisions or plays.

right, right, so playing 2000 games of LoL, didn't prepare me for how to play well. But after I played 80 games in Bronze league, that's when I really learned how to play, and, in fact, that one, specific game, when I advanced to Silver I: in that game, I learned so much, that afterwards, I had a 90% win rate. That's it, then? Playing 80 games in Bronze league showed me how to play really well; not the 2000 games I played prior.

You repeated yourself, see previous response.

You were a scrub that couldn't be Bronze players for awhile. Git gud.

I have something to add here, that's only really applicable to Bronze 5. A lot of people here are running around 35% win rates, like myself. I would say no more than half of the players in B5 actually have achieved a 50% win rate, which is really surprising and demorailizing considering the system is designed to ensure that. It's as if the system just ran out of lower Elo players to pair you with. It doesn't make sense. Seriously, if you look through my match history, you will see that in every game at least 4 people are in the 30%s or below. Elo Hell is just the failure of the MMR/Ranking system, and that is a big failure.

ELO Hell does exist, however what people define it as in general is incorrect...

ELO Hell is specifically the Division 1 promo's. When you're getting the worst players from the tier above yours vs some mid-level players from the same tier. The stats clearly show there is a massive tilt against division 1 promotional players when looking at the teams.

Outside of that, the only time "ELO Hell" exists, is when you go on a fairly large win streak and spike your MMR to well above your own league. Example: I hit Gold 1, quit playing, decayed to Silver 1. On my way back to Gold 1, I hit a solid 12 game winning streak. When I was in Gold 2, I was already against Platinum 3+ players because my MMR was as high as theirs. This got even worse when I hit Gold 1.

My promo series in Gold 1 has been by far the hardest set of games until I eventually found myself grounding out in Platinum 2.

However, this notion that, "I can't win game because my team too noob" is bullshit at the Bronze-Silver level, and I'd even say the Gold level. If you're truly that good of a player, you can solo carry out of it. Learn how to effectively split push. (Tryndamere is great at this. Win lane, use ult to win all 1v1's and split to win.) There are many tricks and strategies you can use at the lower tiers to really carry your team with your individual effort. It's not until you get into high tiers that your opponents can deal with all of these strategies (and even then, teams still get disorganized and make mistakes to the same tactics) and it becomes nigh impossible to straight up solo carry.

elo hell does not exist i know, i went through bronze to silver 1 in a week with like 80% winrate also all the higher elo ppl who just stream their smurfs and rush through bronze and silver like its nothing

Okay.. but it's not about "high elo ppl." It's about mid level elo, who get stuck in literally the lowest grouping of people. Because they don't have perfect skills, they can't just get out of every situation, and their bad teammates drag them down when they try to make good plays.

if they play better they win more you dont have to be a god at this game to get out of silver

Elo hell isn't classified as smurfing. Wanna know why? My ranked winrate on this account is a little over 50% and I'm a master smurf. Reason why I'm not at a 90% win rats is simple. Teammates. I could go 10-0 top but if my teammates can't play their role, we lose. Outplaying in every teamfight isn't possible and that makes my life that much harder. I don't know how I even got to master if j can barely make through silver right now. This win one with good teammates, carry one with bad teammates, and try to carry one with horrific teammates is the worst system I have ever seen.
