at what point are we going to just come out and say that melee bruisers and tanks are removed from competitive play? how many more buffs to carry items and nerfs to tank items before it just becomes completely unviable to be a tank.

Cale0171 votesHe only shuts down melee fighters who allow him to stack his magic damage procs on them and don't keep their distance when he's about to go Mega Gnar. A Gnar is actually pretty easy to bait out, make him waste spells or abilities and be unable to really get away afterwards, and he's severely weakened after an oftentimes forced, and thereby wasted, Mega Evolutio--er, Mega Gnar transformation. He's highly susceptible to burst damage (Wukong's E Q W harass combo for instance) and has an very wonky itemization path that either makes his Mega form unable to really sit and duel someone in an open area or makes his Mini Gnar form unable to withstand sustained damage or heavy burst.
He can capitalize on poor positioning, but he's just as easy to be punished for making his own mistakes after he overcommits. Possibly even easier.

"oh this guy picked gnar so i have to figure out a way to outplay him or im screwed" being a better player than your lane opponent is not a counter to an overloaded kit its a cop out for players defending it. thats like saying oh nid isnt to strong i outplayed a bad nid player in lane the other day

In high level play, where your opponent is going to be smart, where they're not going to take someone that he can just eat alive without even trying? You've got it backwards. It's at low level play, where people don't have enough foresight to bring someone who can punish his squishy Mini Gnar form like Wukong for instance, that he's at his strongest. High level players know that if you shut him down early his midgame vanishes, and he never really has an endgame either way.

When i am Garen or Darius top against Gnar, i run away like he is bullying me, wait for him to jump at me then turn around and attack him. Works majority of the time, but if he turns Mega Gnar then my plan is ruined or if he doesn't jump after me also kinda ruins it.

Stephenizgod1 votesuh yes... why is that so ridiculous? A lot of people will get cocky or careless and i use it against them. Its a mind game, if you run away and they dont follow just spam /laugh, eventually it will get to them. If you lose a trade but get away, spam /laugh... If they miss a chance to go in, spam /laugh... If their Jungler ganks and fails spam /laugh... They will eventually just go all in on you out of frustration, specially Garen's booming laughter really gets to them.

Stephenizgod1 votesNo what i said was "If i play it smart i can outplay my opponent." that doesnt mean im significantly better, i am just making them think they have more of an advantage then they actually do. This will work on players of all skill levels (not this specific idea, obviously someone of way higher elo isnt going to use their only escape to get in range of their opponent) its not about stupidity or skill level. If the opponent is sure they can win it is only natural they let their guard down even slightly, if i have like 200 HP left and they know they can kill me if they jump at me then hit me like 2 more times, then yea they will probably do it. What they dont know is that i am banking on them trying to kill me, they cant read my mind so they dont know if im panicking or calm.
Saiyan Knight2 votesI think you're confusing "If I play smart" and "I just pray my opponent makes a mistake." Saying that you rely on them being stupid, or "cocky" as you chose to phrase it, implies that you will definitely and for sure lose to someone who also is playing at an equal skill level.
Stephenizgod1 votesNo that is not true, even players of equal or higher skill get cocky, they are still human, specially when they think someone is worse then them. I do not consider every person ive beaten as worse then me or stupider. There are plenty of ways to fight against someone you acknowledge as better or equal to you. If you can't beat them with your champions abilities then you need to play differently.
Just because i get the Gnar to jump after me thinking he is going to get a kill, doesn't mean he is stupider or worse then me. It means my bait worked, do you think you are stupid every time you fall for a bait (and dont say you never do because im just going to ignore that lie) im guessing no, at least i dont, it means my opponent used my own strategy against me so good for them. Its called being outplayed and anyone of any skill can do it and have it done to them.
Btw i dont like being insulted when you have never seen me play, so i think you should word your responses less insulting. You are basically saying "You only win with your strategies because you only fight bad people, if you fought good people you would lose." Sohleks1 votesIt's not Gnar's laning phase that makes him broken (but it's definitely not a real weakness, Gnar's laning phase); it's the fact he can build full tank and do respectable damage as mini gnar or destroy half your team with mega gnar's R + W combo. And hell, if you don't want to teamfight against that Gnar can handle any kind of split push champ you throw at him once he has some tankiness. His ranged kiting skills and damage with tanky items is pretty unique to him and very powerful.
Early game Gnar's weakness in lane is either heavy dive from the likes of J4/Irelia or heavy pushing power since he kind of lacks that. But life is still definitely manageable for Gnar in even his worst matchups. Not a real weakness.
He is permabanned in competitive against any team who can play Gnar for good reason. Everyone discussing how they've outlaned Gnar with X don't seem to be aware of the real problem. Yeah there are a few counterpicks and strategies you can use to beat Gnar but I'm just saying Gnar single handedly outclasses half of the top lane tanks/bruisers this game had.
NsEternal1 votesGnars biggest problem is that he can jump out of most fighters attack range without having to jump off of an enemy. he literally gets a free flash that doesnt cost mana and has a low cooldown. it also animation cancels renektons stun, causing renektons stun to go on cd and gnar not taking any damage or being stunned. i wouldnt have any problems with gnar if he either started using mana, or was only able to jump onto an enemy only.
DrNova1 votesI main Gnar top alot, and I am by no means invincible. Super aggressive/Good movement making me miss boomerang/Getting away when I'm forced to change - These things prevent me from doing what I want to do. And usually My boomerang pushes my lane. Good people I've faced, if not getting hyper aggressive on me when I'm small, will just let me push lane and get jungle to gank (I ward duel in river at the very least because of this)
But Gnar is beatable for sure. Depends on who your using, like most matchups, but he's far from Superpowered. I think most people just dont see him enough to really know what Gnar players do. Get a free week and try him out and I think you'll have a better understanding of how to beat him. I can beat a good Gnar usually just because of my knowledge on what screws ME when I am him.
