A less squishy-punishing Infinity Edge

As you know, the mechanic of critical strikes serves as a tool to increase auto-attack DPS to levels capable of taking down tanky targets in a reasonable timeframe. An unfortunate side effect of this is that auto-attacks become super punishing to targets that do not feature much in the department of additional resistances, leading to the infamous crit 1-shots.

Now, what if Infinity Edge's passive was changed to the following, instead of increasing critical strike bonus damage by 50%?

On critical strike, X% of critical strike bonus damage is converted to true damage.

Now, hold your horses before circle-jerking about true damage. This passive is formulated specifically in the manner outlined above, to prevent certain problems from cropping up: First, it does not work with Sheen, Draven's axes, Vayne's Tumble (EDIT: That damage bonus can crit, my memory served me wrong) or other damage-improving effects, as these are non-crit-based damage boni and thus would not get affected. Second, Randuin's and other crit-damage reducing effects could work against this, depending on when the true-damage conversion would take place.

Now, to demonstrate the effect of such a change, numbers!

We have our ADC with the new IE and 400 AD. Let's also assume that changed IE converts 25% of the bonus damage into true damage. With Live IE, he would crit for 1000 damage, With changed IE, he would crit for 700 physical damage and 100 true damage. 800 damage against a 0-armor target

There's obviously a difference in the raw damage numbers. How would these numbers hold up against a non-minion target?

Assume that the target has 50/100/200/300 effective Armor.

Life IE deals 667 / 500 / 333 / 250 damage. Changed IE would deal 567 / 450 / 333 / 275 damage.

As you can see, the damage against more squishy targets is reduced, while staying the same against moderate tanks. Only against the tankiest of tanks, the damage is actually increased.

TL;DR:

Change IE passive from increasing crit bonus damage to converting a part of crit bonus damage to true damage. Less damage to squishies, same damage to moderate tanks.

This....blew me out the water, actually. I made a mortified face when I read the proposal, then read the little bit of math and got on board. My only concern is about super-tanky tanks suddenly not having a place since they get burned down quicker...but the 'super tanky' part makes me think that it might not be so bad.

You are aware some of those damage modifiers can crit? Like Vayne's tumble

Yeah, that was my bad. Vayne's one of the few attack modifiers where the bonus damage itself can crit, as well. Changed it in the post.

Wouldn't think that to be much of an issue, though - as the bonus damage can be multiplied on Live, as well. In fact, the Tumble Crit would follow the same pattern - less damaging against squishies, the same against moderate tanks.

This would be really cool, I think it would do a great job of addressing the goals outlined by Riot about making Crit more of a tank-busting stat!
