What's going on with Malphite?
I don't think anyone really has a problem with where Malphite is right now. But I'm genuinely upset that a champion designed to play tank is recommended to build as much AP as Malphite is. Malphite's spell damage utilizes Ability Power. However, the rest of his kit relies on more tank stats: Health and Armor.
The nature of these abilities is designed so that you can neglect building tank. He gains a shield based on a percent of his maximum Health, effectively increasing his maximum Health by a percent. He also gains bonus armor based on a percent of his total armor. This means more utility out of Armor and Health providing items. So item focus becomes AP oriented.
I also want to bring attention to Malphite's skins. With the exception of Mecha Malphite, all of his skins are basic- and many of them simply work like chromas in game. There isn't much visual to Malphite's abilities, so skins seem to just fall short. Which is another concern for building AP on a champion that doesn't appear to be very magical. All of Malphite's skills are very brutish, only his Q really has a noticeable visual effect.
I don't want to be "that guy" but, can we give Malphite an overhaul?
I read an interesting Boards discussion over a year ago suggesting a mechanic where Malphite grows in size based on his current Armor. That sounds pretty cool. I'm sure Riot can do some amazing things with Malphite- I just hope they'll give him that attention.
