Best and worst designs in league

Best:

Draven: Actual gameplay and desicions, Actual engaging counterplay with axe disruption

Singed: Psychological tank, area denial based on pure positioning. Reverse- gap closer by making people chase YOU.

Maokai: Well balanced tank with lots of positioning decisions (better with old maokai ult), as welll as having a unique role.

Gangplank rework: Venn Diagram pseudo ranged melee carry. Lots of creative potential.

Graves rework: Nice design with the T shot, promotes and reward very aggressive play.

Brand: Combo based means decisions to make in what spells to empower and what not Instead of "hurr just land spells". Simple but engaging gameplay

Worst:

Riven: Resourceless spamming faceroll cancer, standard bruiser copypaste kit with "mlg big plays tons of damage call of duty(tm)"

Yasuo: Same as above, but prettier animations to give off the illusion of "high skill cap" and "wow so unique design!"

Yorick: Hyped as "wow creative summoning mechanics". Comes out as trash generic bruiser. Extremely faceroll gameplay.

Wukong: Hyped for months, standard boring copypaste kit. Decoy is a pathetic Dopplewalk

Lux: "point skillshots at general direction of enemy and deals tons of damage" No desicions. Other mages of this category at least self CC themselves in some way

Rengar: Nerubian Assassin in a game without BKB or dust. 100 to 0 in seconds.

Tam Kench: Press one button and "counterplay" the entire enemy team.

Please... don't talk about design if you don't understand it.

if you're actually interested in learning how game design works, read this: https://gamifique.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/1-rules-of-play-game-design-fundamentals.pdf

What have you worked on?

I also have experience in game design (both paper prototypes and mobile game development for a multi-million user company), and I can tell you that among actual professionals, this book is considered the bible of game design.

Brand best, Riven worst? Lmfao what is this

I ain't saying Brand is the best, but...

Riven is a resourceless champion whose kit promotes spamming, obscene amounts of mobility, and damage tacked onto it. The skillcap is artificially inflated by a mechanic that wasn't supposed to be there in the first place (animation cancelling), and she scales extremely well offensively and defensively with CDR and flat AD.

To add insult to injury she's got enough mobility in her kit that if you are losing as Riven you shouldn't be getting caught and killed without a ton of instant mobility and lockup, and if you're ahead only a select few champs can escape you.

tl;dr he's pointing out that when Brand is strong he's got an absurd amount of damage, but that's about it. And while that is frustrating and all it doesn't make him bad design because he's got strengths, weaknesses, etc. On the other hand when Riven is strong she's downright abusive, and there's no escaping/catching her.

Riven absolutely requires animation cancelling and knowledge of combos to perform decently in high elo. Maybe from a lower elo perspective, Brand probably seems harder because he has skillshots. However a Riven that facerolls will get deleted and accomplish nothing. Also, animation cancelling is intended and supported by Riot. Orb walking is another common example of animation cancelling.

You're literally arguing, "This champion is difficult so good game design."

That's not the point. The point is, "Does this champion have a kit that rewards skillful gameplay and punishes misplays? Riven's kit doesn't inherently punish the same things other kits punish. Hell, in general the only thing Riven's kit punishes is lukewarm play (not playing full on, 100% aggressive) and getting caught out (the only champs who aren't heavily punished by this are Gragas, Mundo, tanky things that can just walk out).

lux is hands down one of the best designs.

clear strength and weaknesses.

shes skillshot dependent. she has long range spells and can create enough burst to kill or finish off a squishy from considerable distance. she has strong zone control with her e and can be effective even when her damage falls off by supporting her team with vision, and peel. a well played lux will never be completely irrelevant, even if she cant kill anyone.

on the other hand, shes rather sqishy herself, immobile, highly mana dependent, has relatively long base cooldowns, and is extremely dependent on her binding. meaning if she misses her q, it gives her opponent a considerable window to move in on her and kill her.

since a lot of her power budget is in her passive, it forces her to take risks and move into auto attack range to access her full damage potential. if you play her yourself, youll notice that its hard actually kill an opponent just sitting at a distance and not utilizing your passive.

overall shes a very well rounded champ with clear counterplay.

just from those you named:

unique/iconic: TahmKench Lux Yasuo Graves Singed

fairly...normal: MonkeyKing Draven Maokai Gangplank Riven Brand

OK, Yorick gets his own group: Yorick

don't get me wrong now: Riven used to be unique, maybe even gamebreaking on release. but now she's pretty standard. As in, she is the standard by which champions in her class are measured. I used to main Maokai. I agree that the old Ult was infinitely better. Yasou: OMG: I HAVE TO ACTUALLY KNOW WHEN HIS SHEILD, WALL, AND KNOCKUP ARE AVAILABLE TO HIM???? I have to PAY ATTENTION to pick/ban, when I'm solo laning??? OUTRAGEOUS!! Gangplank may be debatable. he has ... well basically all his abilities are fairly unique. but when you put it all together it isn't that flashy or outrageous. I'd say he's a great champion; just not iconic.
