Whats the motivation in climbing higher than gold? When you get a skin when you reach gold?

I think riot lacks the motivation to awards players in the end of the season. My friends are always why don't you rank higher? I'm like because you know what they say gold is as high as you can get and the rewards is bigger by just being Gold. there is no purpose in going higher.

Bragging rights, competitiveness, the drive to get better?

what of casual players?

What do they care about rank? Wouldn't they rather relax and play Taric top in norms than fret about losing out on end-of-season rewards?

JavelinJoe1 votes

They don't care about ranked much. But they like ranked queue for the more "non-bullshit" game setting. For example, some may like to play for fun and choose odd comps or off meta builds. But there are others who do not play super competitively but want to at least try to win. Either way, most like free stuff.

i don't think you're wrong. But I also don't think you're right. You're just not a competitive type. You don't have the motivation cause there isn't more rewards. But for competitive players like myself don't care about rewards. Just want to get to the highest rank as I can and that's what makes the game fun for me.

Would that just increase the rate of being toxic? Because I've had alot of friends who becomes toxic the higher they climb.

being competitive isn't synonymous with being toxic. Being toxic is more related to maturity levels, or in this case, the lack of maturity to handle being in a competitive environment.

Can't handle a competitive environment != lack of maturity

It does in the context that we were talking about, ie: becoming toxic.

Context matters, but I suppose I should've clarified that.

Troll for Trump1 votes

It doesn't, even in that. The competitiveness generally increases as you climb, it's not static and just "a competitive environment." Most cases aren't people just randomly snapping at people.

By "competitive environment" I was referring to any situation where one wants to improve and climb the ranked ladder. Any situation where your rank is at stake and there is value in winning/losing beyond just the outcome of the game.

There are toxic people in bronze/silver just as there are toxic people in diamond+. The level of competitiveness doesn't really matter for the point that I was making. I was really just saying that some people lack the maturity to keep their feelings in check when something is on the line, like there is in every game in a competitive environment.

People aren't toxic just because they can be, it's because they care (to a degree) on the outcome of the game to a degree where they value that result over the well-being of others, which shows a lack of maturity.

Troll for Trump1 votes

They're toxic because they really want to win, and the drive to win generally increases as you climb. That doesn't mean they value it over the well-being of others. They know they need the team to win. What that means is that they'll be stricter with their teammates and desperately try to push them through whatever means. That often leads to toxicity.

It's not like they're disregarding their team and throwing them away, but more like they're frustrated at them.

and lashing out at others in frustration isn't immature? If you can't handle a competitive environment and/or struggles in that environment (of any kind) without lashing out and trying to emotionally harm your teammates then you are indeed immature in at least some aspect.

Idk how acting out and lashing out under stress can't be viewed as a lack of maturity...

Troll for Trump1 votes

They aren't actively trying to intentionally hurt their allies in most cases, but more annoyed at their inadequacy.

There are also retaliation cases, which are a separate thing. That's a person-person thing rather than competitive environment.

They want their teammates to do better and to win the game, but they don't have any way of doing so, and are frustrated. They may be mad at the person, but it's not like they want to do something as extreme as hurt them physically or emotionally, once again, in most cases.

They are still acting out and lashing out at their teammates due to a stressful or competitive environment which is absolutely a sign of immaturity.

It does but it's a nature of team base games. There is toxicity because it's a team game where your teammate's mistake can screw things over. If you learn to just hit that mute button, the game is actually a lot more quiet and more focus. Don't know what's the point of having all chat enable because all you would see is enemies begging for reports or do the "?" Just to tlit you off. Disable all chat and toxic teammates. So much peace.

You'll get high schoolers whose only achievement thus far in life is getting Diamond so they'll try to rub it in people's faces, but the most vitriolic portion of the community in my experience is Bronze and low Silver players who are both competitve and bad and won't admit it. I started Season 3 in Bronze and I still remember a Talon who spent 3 minutes cussing me out (and the rest of the game calling me garbage) because i missed a Shen taunt by 1 pixel.

Because some people want to get better at the game?

Basura Nephilim3 votes

I see this a lot. People that get too hung up on rewards. People, rewards aren't the end goal of the game. The rewards are hooks they sink in you as a motivation of investment or greed...so you stay around.

People rank higher because some like a challenge. It's not about the rewards it's about showing competence and ''bragging rights'' Or others just downright play for fun and are better than gold.

I really feel that if rewards are your motivation to play ranked, you're tricking yourself.

Reward-wise, Probably only matters in icons & borders. Spirit-wise, it's like you fresh and fly to another level.

So i can flame high elo aquintances and make rivarlies with them to have fun. You wont play with the same people in low tiers.

I don't see the point of adding more rewards for ranking - it means you don't have to feel bad for sitting out on the ranked grind, and that's good for the game as a recreational experience.

Gold rewards are just a lure to try ranked and to encourage the environment on which pro-play can be built and in which competative players can enjoy themselves. After that you're either hooked, or no amount of free stuff could keep you in that hell =P

With all the ex-plats I personally know who got bored of the ranked grind and just play norms, I don't feel there's as much credence to ranks below diamond as people like to imagine.

I can know that even if I stop playing at gold 5.

I had to play my gold promo in the gold 3-1 elo range.

This season I'm gonna prove it to myself. My goal last season was just getting gold back. This season I'm aiming for diamond or higher.

Bronze - "Youre hardstuck bronze and wont get out LUL, hardstuck bronze LUL"

Get to Silver - "Youre a Hardstuck Silver 5 and will never get out. Have fun trying to get to gold you hardstuck Silver LUL"

Get to Gold - "Youre a Hardstuck Gold player, good luck getting to Plat."

Get to Plat - "Hardstuck Plat, youre never gonna get to Diamond. Youre hardstuck Plat1 forever."

Get to Diamond - "LUL youre just a hardstuck D5 player LUL. Probably got boosted, LUL."

Get to D4 - "LUL youre playing the most OP champion in the game, idk how youre not Masters LUL"

You get the point, this is what I face everytime I play on a smurf. I get these exact messages from tilted enemy players that I beat.

Nope... not worth to climb higher than gold because of waiting time + one won teamfight mean win, and a lot of one side win (faster to surrender or see rage quitter/ afkers)

Gold is where I found fun the most.

They should give rewards for plat and up, I don't see why not.
