How do you beat Darius without a 3v1 pre-6?

AlienPrimate··5 votes·1,114 views

If there is anyone who can consistently beat Darius without saying "x champion beats him" please feel free to share with the rest of the class on how it's done. Out of all of the times I have ever played against Darius I have only ever not fed him when I used Heimerdinger. No matter what I do, what strategy I use, or who I'm playing there is absolutely nothing I can do against him. If I try to farm he hits me with an auto, slows, pulls, autos, spins and I bleed out. If I sit under tower I fall behind in CS and he just dives me from 100% hp anyways for the kill after he has his ult. If I play a ranged champ like Teemo or Rumble (pretty much a ranged champ) he just flashes on me and we are back to my first point. Why is a champion who is supposedly countered by kiting allowed to have 2 forms of cc and a mini dash? Other juggernauts like Garen, Illaoi, and Morde have a grand total of 0 CC so they are easy to deal with but Darius gets an AOE Blitz pull and one of the strongest slows in the game.

Play Yorick, play like a pussy till you get ghouls. When you get ghouls E him, or wall and E. Galio can probably abuse his massive hitbox and poke him out of lane. Illoai can beat Darius. Olaf can just run at Darius early.

The point of picking Darius is to consistently give your opponent a hard time fighting you in lane. Against Darius, you have to counterpick him to really dominate him in lane. Otherwise, you basically just endure and try and ask for help if you really need gold early on. He has great damage, sustain, beefiness, and enough CC to make fighting him not just a DPS race, although it can feel like a race due to his passive. However, there are a few champions that allow you to beat him:

Kennen Kennen Kennen has amazing mobility in-lane and enough range to poke Darius down without too much worry of Darius pulling something tricky on him like Flash. You can safely farm in lane using your Q (and W if needed) and if he gets near you, you can activate EWQ and get away. If you do well enough, you should be able to poke him down and get him out of lane.

Fiora Fiora This takes a lot of skill to pull off, not going to lie just because I hate Fiora. You gotta time your W just right to stun him from his pull or negate his Q damage. You will stalemate him till you hit 6, upon which it entirely comes down to who is the better player.

Swain Swain To be fair, Swain is basically the "end all, be all" (or however the phrase goes) of winning lane. If you can't win lane as Swain, I have little hope for you. Swain's Q can slow Darius down to where he can't get right on you and then you can W him fairly easily so that he can't just wreck you with his R. If he zones you away from the minion wave, no worries, your Q is amazing at clearing the wave and scoring you some easy gold. Once you hit 6, it's really hard to lose trades as Swain so it only gets easier as you level.

Tryndamere Tryndamere Why? Your W. It will reduce his AD by an absolute metric ton, so if you play your cards right, you will take MUCH less damage from trades with him. Plus, you have sustain like him, so you can heal back a lot of the damage he deals to you. If he catches you, you can E away and take a breather before going back in. Once you hit 6, your 6 counters his so you shouldn't have to worry about level 6 changing the match-up too much.

Oh, who am I missing? Hhmmm... oh...

Kayle Kayle You can't lose this lane with this match-up. You have to try and lose to lose this one.

I love picking Kayle into Darius. It's hilarious watching him try to ult you, only to get completely cock-blocked

LordGeovanni1 votes

The thing the is that other champions that are supposed to do exactly the same thing in lane get completely cock blocked by darius Aatrox Chogath DrMundo Jax Irelia these champions are champions that are supposed to fight in lane darius bullies every single one of them out of lane

I have met a lot of trolling Kayles then lol

First and foremost - Stormraider's surge. It'll make life against Darius so much less frustrating. This also means using a champ capable of bursting him for 30% or whatever, but that's not too hard through most of the game. Totally invalidates his slows, AKA he can't keep up with you.

The main trick is small trades. I play Diana exclusively into him(And she dumps on him, FYI), so with her my goal is to get my passive primed, Q>R>W>Passive empowered AA>E>Run. This is enough damage to proc stormraider's, making his slows useless. Even if he hasn't used his pull until I run at the end, the stormraider's makes the slow from the pull not matter, and my E slows him in advance so I can still run.

In a close fight with him, say you're both at 15% and you KNOW you can kill him if that Q doesn't heal him - Don't hesitate to do something silly, like flash from the outside edge of his blade to the center of his model. No, it's not something do every time by any means, but things like this that seem counter intuitive can save you sometimes by denying him the heal of getting hit with the outside edge. Keep trades with him short, use any champion that can dump their combo on him and GTFO, or one that doesn't have to interact with him in order to lane(Hello GP). Don't ever let him get 3+ stacks during a trade. If he does, all he has to do is land a Q as you run then dunk you.

Bait him into using his Q near minion waves, walk toward him then walk away - Make him hit those minions and push the wave. Farm safely from under your turret while blasting him/running away with stormraider's proc any time he dares to show his big Noxian ass on your half of the lane.

Overall, since you don't want specific champ picks..

-Use Stormraider's Surge and any champion capable of dumping their entire burst in a short time to proc the Stormraider's and GTFO.

-Focus on small trades, if he gets you to 3+ stacks of his passive GTFO.

-If he engages with his pull, and you're above 50-60% health - Dump your combo real quick before you try to run. Chances are if you run right away you're eating a full damage Q blade.

-If you're under 50% health and he has his ultimate, stay the hell away from him. One stupid mistake and he's going to dunk you.

-Dodge that Q blade! If he's walking at you using it, walk at him! Get as close as you can and pop him in the jaw while he's spinning that axe harmlessly out of range. If you're in his face and he uses it while walking away from you, Walk away from him and get out of it's range. Keep in mind he'll almost always have more MS than you due to rage Procs, so you need to work in the opposite direction from him to avoid that axe.

-USE YOUR CC TO DISENGAGE. Most people want to use it to engage, and that works against a squishy. Not against Darius. He's going to pull you back and beat your ass. Save that slow or stun for your last move in your combo, and run away while he's stuck with the CC.

Best I can honestly tell you other than learn Diana because she straight invalidates him.

Darius can't apply bleed if you hug him when he does his Q. He also can't auto when he Qs. Playing safe and farming is the easiest way to beat him. His Q has a windup, and a rather short cool down, but his CC is actually negligible. There is a period where he must stop moving to use his pull, and his slow only lasts a, second or two. If the CC really bugs you, Mercurial treads are actually a, decent buy for him after your first item. Building health is also a, good way, to defend against Darius.

Stray Kat3 votes

Mercs are actually a horrible buy against him considering they don't do a whole lot with him just having slows. Much more effective to buy swifties to reduce the effectiveness of those slows and have the extra MS to counteract his Rage procs.

Dale Wardark1 votes

Fair point! I usually just build Mercs anyway because I play a lot of Garen and the MR and overall Tenacity comes in handy.

Stray Kat1 votes

Indeed, Mercs are wonderful - Not a BAD choice if the rest of his team has a lot of CC(Mumu in the jungle, Leo/Jhin botlane, Veigar mid? Grab dem Mercs.) But if you're specifically trying to get more effectiveness against the Darius, Swifties do the trick. Especially if the rest of his team is filled with slows(Darius/Eve/Diana/MF/Lulu for instance).

Then again, Stormraiders is enough slow resistance on it's own if you can proc it, in which case it's a battle between Mercs or Tabis, depending on the rest of his team.

He can still apply it with his basic attacks, and a good Darius will lead in with an basic+W+basic combo (2x passive stacks now), followed by Q and moving away from you. Since you're slowed, you can't stay inside the inner blade radius (without some form of mobility at least), also 3x passive stacks now unless you had mobility and got out. If initiated that trade, it's even worse, because now he still has his E and will yank you back in for some more punishment. 2 more autos after the E and it's 5 stacks. Now he has a TON of free bonus ad, which just skyrocketed the damage his now fully stacked bleed is doing to you and means his basic attacks now hit like a truck (the bleed is nasty af once the passive pops, legit been killed by that alone when I had over 150 hp left at level 2 after killing him because he fucked up royally near my Irelia).

I think I've basically never lost lane as Darius versus a pure melee opponent, he's just that fucking busted against them. At least old Darius has no built in sustain, so you could play the sustain war against him and maybe not get shat on. There's a reason almost everyone defaults to counter picking him with Teemo or Quinn nowadays...you can actually trade with him and not auto-lose it.

FYI: In case you're wondering, I've played Darius a far amount over the years, as well as many other top laners (including plenty of pure melee, like Irelia, Renekton, etc.)

Hug darius when he uses q even though early game you both move at the same speed and he has the advantage of useing it when he knows he can hit it and you run into him so he miss good he still does a good chunk of damage and now you are at a range where you cant excape him for his auto attack and his q is back up in 3-6 seconds

Ban him

Just wait him out and go for safe CS

If he uses spells then he's shoving. if he doesn't get early kills then he'll fall off in usefulness

  1. play another lane bully and roll your forehead on your keyboard
  2. play a duelist and know how to actually play the game
  3. play any champ and know how to manage a minion wave
NovaDisk1 votes

In a lot of matchups, especially against someone like Darius, the best play possible is to sit far behind your minion wave, watch minions die without farming or being able to trade, and waiting for the wave to eventually come to you so you can try to farm under turret while being harassed.

It's pretty un-fun but that's the way Top Lane is right now.

Oh yeah, and if you ever forget it and try to farm or trade, Darius will chunk you to half then the jungler will come and dive you. So don't forget.

MissingKayo1 votes

You're not supposed to usually beat him earlygame most champions. Darius gets earlygame power because any intelligent team shits on him later. That's why you just farm under turret/near turret. Then you outscale and your team dumpsters him collectively.

Annoxis1 votes

Renekton can somehow manage, if experience serve. You dash when he tries to Q, execute your combo and then get back. You need to W after your Q, because if you don't, you risk to be at range of Apprehend if he uses it instantly after you dash out. If he start by Apprehend, just stun then dash out.

Darius has a lot of weaknesses. Low range, low mobility, he has a hard cc and a slow, but they are low range as well. If you're laning against a Darius, my one and only suggestion is that you play Quinn. Her CC, disengage, and early damage and poke shuts down Darius very hard. He gets in Melee, and all you have to do is press E. Simple as that. Otherwise, other champs, play safe and wait for ganks. CS under tower and then fight. It sucks having to rely on others to wear him down, but it's the best choice. Getting help outweighs doing it alone and letting him snowball.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Darius Kit is pretty fine as far as his spells go but his passive bleed and his e passive gives him lots of power and negates yours.
