Can Mordekaiser retain the option to go Mid post rework, similar to Galio?

Malicious Metal··31 votes·2,497 views

I really loved the Galio rework, having spammed him to Mastery 7 the moment he came out. Yet, unlike most Galio's I've seen, I play him primarily MID, as Riot tried to retain as one of his primary roles.

Which brings up the question whether Mordekaiser will still be able to be played mid post VGU as a lot of older Morde mains, myself included, started playing him in Mid when they first picked him up. I personally prefer playing him Mid anyways as it allows me to be more proactive around the map and truly feel like the Conquering Warlord Morde's supposed to be.

Just on a lore level Mid lane Morde makes sense, as he's THE Tyrant. He likes being the center of attention and extend his reach over just ONE lane. It would be pretty cool for him to be able to roll mid as a situational counter to Assassins and burst mages similar to what Galio currently does.

And frankly, it's rather easy to keep him a viable choice mid lane as long as he retains strong wave clear, ranged farming tools (like Galio's winds of wars) and be able to fill the team's need of Magic damage. Not to mention it opening up some pretty cool team comps with top being able to play a squishier champion than usual.

Just something I've been thinking about recently, I'd just like to be able to still roll Mid post VGU, just so I can farm the entire map and go about chewing ass and kicking bubblegum. Because having the enemy fear the Mid lane Revenant roaming to kick their asses would be extremely satisfying after all!

I still feel he's more of a Battle mage/ Juggernaut hybrid. It's why he works in mid. The AD crap needs to go

(Sorry was a rushed post)

Edit: My problem with the AD on Morde is simply because the Hybrid Itemization has been shit in this game for years Mordes got enough issue's

Malicious Metal2 votes

Indeed, he's always been the most Mage-y Juggernaut and it really fits him thematically anyways!

I disagree on the AD bit though as it opens up some pretty great Hybrid itemization for him like Sterak's gage and Gunblade. It just doesn't have to be his main form of offensive scaling. Currently he's better off building more AP than AD anyways^^ Base AD in particular is a natural scaling for Juggernauts and helps them contribute even without a lot of items.

TotalJerk1 votes

The AD scaling gives him more build options, which he really needs if he isn't gonna be able to have any mobility or CC. Before he was nerfed he basically only cared about the passives/actives on items.

More tanky melee midlaners please. I don't want to only play Talon mid.

Sahn Uzal9 votes

Play Swan. All you need is his Tyrant skin and Bird. because Bird is the Word.

Ralanr2 votes

But Swain just needs to keep close to people to make birds bounce. Imo that's boring.

Sahn Uzal1 votes

Eh, since the mid season changes to him, proper Q and W placement is pretty important now, I think he's a lot of fun :P

Play Vlad. He's like Swain but you don't afk birdman.

Or play Morde. He's like Vlad but you don't have to sit back and farm like a pansy for 20+ minutes to be revenant.

Big Lincoln5 votes

to be revenant lel

i see that

Play Morde, he's like Vlad, but he's not total fucking garbage.

I still think Galio kind of SHOULD be played mid, tbh. I don't see the point in taking all his MR scaling to top lane, except as a situational counter. He's more consistent in mid, I would think. I just checked op.gg to check myself, and it seems people FINALLY stopped playing him in the jungle with that abysmal 44% win rate...

Anyway, on Morde, I just want that dumb dragon ghost gone. I don't remember where you landed on that ability, in particular, but I refuse to get over it. We don't need to keep shitposting about it forever, but that doesn't mean I'm okay with it, you know? There are better ways to make Morde feel like a badass.

The dragon ghost needs to go for the health of the champion. They are keeping it in check with bugs that's a sign of its unhealthy state

Played him mid top jungle support adc and fountain afker. The problem I have with morde is that I never know how the fuck I build him even though i played him for years! Full ap?Bruiser?tank?I think the only items that stayed no matter the build are : item 3116 item 3151 item 3065 For the others,it depends on what I have against me: item 3020 item 3047 item 3111 item 3078(rare) item 3146 item 3053 item 3135 item 3157 item 3742item 3285 item 3089 . Geez it's driving me crazy ,that's an identity crisis i'm going through I don't know if it's the same for you guys XD

Malicious Metal2 votes

I just adapt to the meta with my builds but my favorite one, and the one I always return to is basically hybrid nuke-bruiser

item 3116 item 3151 item 3146 item 3053

I just hope the tank meta comes again

I play him primarily top but it'd be cool if riot wouldn't kill the diversity.

Like, we already got top and jungle Juggernauts, why no Mid lane ones?

Sahn Uzal1 votes

as he's THE Tyrant

Jokes aside, I definetly agree this would be pretty cool :^)

Wait you play Mordekaiser somewhere else?

Malicious Metal3 votes

Funny thing. When I started playing him in late season two I played him primarily mid, and did so almost the entirety of season 3.

But the thing with Morde is that I adapt to the meta where I play him. The past two seasons I played him primarily top lane but just recently made the switch back to mid because of the stuff that haunts top lane not being something I want to deal with.

There's also a fair share of Jungle and Bot lane Morde in my match history as I like playing him with a premade buddy as it's really funny being bloodthirsty bastards over Voice coms.^^

i've never had an overly large issue playing morde top the only person I don't like fighting is fiora/Irelia. Favorite lanes I like to go up against is renekton/darius/riven.

Malicious Metal1 votes

Riven is so laughably easy, it's always a joy.

Thing is, in my elo the most common top laners are Jayce and Kennen, both of which shit on Morde.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

I'd be surprised if he wasn't reworked mid

kagepaladin1 votes

i played him mainly mid for the longest time then fizz started seeing alot more play then I moved upto top lane.

AgeOfTheMage1 votes

yeah, but in games like blind pick (where some lower elo's, or highers reside) I love going more because once you get fed theres no stopping him from 1v4ing.(same for yorick)

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

Well, I think we have to first remember why he was able to work Mid as a viable pick, and whether or not the reason why lies in some of the core problems Morde had before the...unfortunate rework. I for one, can not remember.

Malicious Metal1 votes

He can still mid.

The thing that makes him work there is being able to shrug off poke and push just as hard as other mid laners.

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

May just be me, but "Shrug off Poke" has always been a worrisome trait, considering some mages early games.

Malicious Metal2 votes

Galio does the same thing with his W passive. As does Fizz with his passive

And a lot of mid laners have a way to mitigate poke (Viktor shield, Vlad heal, etc.)

A lot of melee champions that work mid have a way not to get completely bullied because they have the range disadvantage.

Top lane's the same shtick with a lot of champions having sustain to recover from trading.

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

Well I don't particularly enjoy laning against Galio either, but that's still just me, and I don't personally think Fizz should have his passive.

I wouldn't whip Viktor in as his more protection mid-trade, than protection against Poke.

Other Melee champs I think of include Zed (has wave clear), Talon (makes up for lack of laning with extreme roam), Ekko (Wave Clear), Cho'Gath (passive that requires killing minions) and Yasou (Pre-emptive shield). The problem I see with Morde is him retaining both his regenerative shield and wave clear, wave clear from which he get's his shield.

Both Galio's and Yasou's shields are preemptive, which only regen after X seconds. Breaking their shield leaves them vulnerable for X seconds for you to take advantage. Cho'gath needs to kill the minions to be able to shrug off Poke, but that still leaves him vulnerable if he uses his abilities to wave clear for health.

The problem I see with Morde (with his past and current versions), is that his Shield is restored via damage (granted it's strength reduced by Minion damage), yet he only get's full effectiveness from Champions. That idea is so counter-intuitive because unless he has a way to deal with Ranged, how is he expected to fight them rightfully with his shield? No good ranged champion is going to let Morde get anywhere close to them.

So instead of having a bad-ass Knight imposing his will and domain upon others, you have a weak cowardly man trying to keep himself afloat by assaulting some minions. When Morde get's his rework, I personally do hope they get rid of Shielding via minions in return receiving an actual way to deal with Ranged people.

You know what the people prior listed have? Some sort of Mobility/means to close the distance. The assassins have mobility, while Cho'Gath has his knock-up and Silence to close distances. While they have their ways to deal with poke, via wave clear and sustain, they also have ways to actually deal with Ranged, so they aren't reliant on their whatever alone.

What I'm trying to say is, since Morde doesn't have a way to actually deal with Ranged (without items), his shield and sustain are resorted to being "Stall my death" instead of defensive elements like they are top Vs. Melee.

Mister Support1 votes

I've always wanted to ask, but what do you think about Morde still having the health costs attached to his abilities? I feel like it's just so awful to have to damage yourself in order to do anything in the game without having strong sustain. Don't get me wrong sustain on a hybrid juggernaut is fine but I feel like the health costs just make for an awkward balance lever where Morde needs his sustain to be potentially overtuned and therefore make the chance for snowball with it to be too strong, or for Morde to require high enough amounts of damage to burst through his sustain that only carries can actually face him.

I have a similar train of thought when it comes to some champions. Post reading Kog'Maw's lore, I thought he was meant to be a jungler with all of his roaming in the lore, his goal, and how he interacts with his environment makes him sound like a jungler. Fortunately it was after the marksman update when I played him jungle and even more when bloodraizor was added that I played Kog'Maw jungle. Rip the 5.0 attack speed God'Maw. I personally hope if/when they decide to rework Kog'Maw to being more of a Jungling Marksman.

That aside, I might have to take up Morde now, looks interesting.
