Blue Buff: Who Deserves It, and Why?

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/f/fa/Blue_Sentinel_OriginalSkin.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20151202202629 Now, I know we've all been in this position before, where you're a midlaner and you're a little behind in lane and you think "Man. If only I had blue buff, things would be so different." Or if you have Frost Queen's Claim and Morellonomicon in your inventory and think "Man, if I had blue buff right now, that'd be amazing." or if you're Riven mid and think "Man, I know I don't really need blue at all because I'm Riven, but if I got one right now, I would be unstoppable."

Here's the thing, though... Despite what your current wishes might be, it's not your decision to choose who gets blue buff, and getting the buff isn't your god-given right. It's a privilege granted to you by your Jungler. Your jungler respects your lane by not running into the middle of it to CS while you're healthy and doing fine, so you respect your jungler by not taking camps they're going for or feeling entitled to the buffs that rightfully belong to them. Yes, if you're doing well and carrying the game, your jungle may be more inclined to give you blue so that you can continue to steamroll your lane, but if your jungler is behind, that blue buff helps them a lot with ganks and clearing their camps. If your jungler is ahead, that blue buff is basically a godsend since they're already packing a lot of stats early-game and if they're ahead, they have to be ganking quite a bit. The extra CDR, mana regen, and AP allow them to gank faster, harder, and even more often.

If you're both behind, it's better on your jungler. If you're both ahead, it's better on your jungler. If you're behind and your jungler is ahead, it's far better on your jungler If you're ahead and your jungler is behind, it's usually better on you unless your jungler is very mana-heavy such as Amumu or Evelynn.

Of course, circumstances change very easily depending on who your jungler is and which midlaner you are, but we're assuming your jungler is someone who can utilize blue buff just the same as you can. So don't get mad if your jungler says "I want this blue right now." That's their choice as the jungler and you, as their team mate, have to respect that choice and continue to play without complaining, even if you're a bit annoyed because you think Blue buff helps you out a lot more than it helps them.

The only time I feel blue buff should always be going to the midlaner is if they're good at keeping themselves alive and it's near the late-game and the jungler isn't someone like Fiddlesticks.

Remember: League of Legends is a team game, and as a team, you need to have mutual respect for eachother. Without that respect, your team will quickly fall into disorder. Your jungle respects you by not running into your lane and taking minions while you're there unless you got a kill off their gank, and you respect your jungler by agreeing with their decision on who gets blue buff and not taking their camps when they're nearby.

Different players will always have different opinions on this topic, but it seems pretty black and white to me. What are your thoughts on the blue buff predicament?

I don't really agree with your view of which situations junglers are better off with blue than the mid laner are, honestly. If we're both ahead then I'm giving it to the mid laner 100% - they'll run out of mana far faster than I will in pressing their lead, and if they're an AP mid laner then it's especially important because the AP blue buff grants will make it even easier for them to further snowball the lead they've got.

The only time I'll maintain that blue is better on me as the jungler is when my mid laner isn't performing well and I can't trust them to stay alive, or if I'm playing a heavily mana-gated jungler. Otherwise I want my mid laner to have an easier time farming and pushing their lane.

Say you're a jungler who can utilize all three stats just as well as the midlaner, and your mid is doing just fine. You would still choose to give it to them instead of take it for yourself and "distribute" it over all lanes, using the buff to help everyone get further ahead? If your mid doesn't kill someone within the 2 minutes they have it, then it's essentially been wasted on them just farming.

To be honest with you I rarely feel like I need blue to run around the map. Not having the AP is something that could pose a problem but with the champions I play (Elise, Evelynn and Sejuani have been my main junglers) I've found that either that as long as I can get a fight, I'll be fine or that a small amount of additional AP wouldn't make a difference.

If my laner is super passive with the blue then it's not very useful but if they're using it to actually cast noticeably more than usual then I don't mind if they're using it to bully, kill, push or just farm better as long as they're doing any of those things. I never miss having blue.

Yeah I wish, not always the case though

I assume you don't play with any junglers that actually know what they're doing.

Oh they know they just seem to think because they showed up in lane and managed to hit the mid laner for 50 health it means they deserve at least 2-3 waves.

I can't say I've ever had this experience ever.

I was exaggerating. But man I hate those junglers who feel like a communist government with their insane tax on the lane.

Vesarixx1 votes

Not even that, I've had junglers just walk up and start taking creeps, a few games ago the shaco on my team got caught, I hit the person chasing him with a charm, saving the shaco, and shaco smites the cannon minion on his way back through mid.

You can say that about anyone below Platinum, honestly.

It depends on who the mid is. If it's Anivia and I'm playing Lee Sin jungle I'm most likely going to give it unless she's died like 5 times already.

Of course -- the circumstance of which jungler it is vs. which mid it is. I'm assuming it's two champions who can utilize it equally.

Most junglers don't utilize as evenly as a mid laner unless you're playing Diana/Kayle/Fiddle/Fizz or your mid laner is an ad assassin in which both cases no one would expect you to give it.

My experience with gank-heavy junglers has been very different from yours, it would seem.

Perhaps then again all the junglers I've played with had no problems managing their mana seeing as each camp gives them back some and never needed the cdr on a gank considering if you have time to recast your ability on someone you're ganking you're doing a pretty poor job of killing them and they kinda suck at escaping.

Nidalee also needs blue (at least for the early-mid game)

There is no "I" in team... but there is one in Darius.

Darius And I'm gonna get that buff.

If you need blue buff to win or maintain your lane then you should probably re-evaluate rather or not you should be playing mid in the first place

junglers usually have mana issues early and they cant just aa to take jg monsters, mid laners have a easier time last hitting with just aa.

Meh as a mid laner I don't need blue buff and rather have my jungler take it so he can clear faster and have more sustain/cds for ganking other lanes. Only way I take blue buff is if jungler has no mana and really wants me to have it.

I main Lux, Anivia, Malz, Talon, Galio, Illaoi, Zilian while mid. The only one out of that I would occasionally ask for blue is anivia but never during laning phase since I know how to manage my resource and still farm or get a kill.
