To All Supports Who Go Doran's Ring

why

[zombie-brand-mindblown]

you get extra gold from spellthiefs if you know how to use it, doran's ring IS NOT A SUPPORT ITEM I CRY EVERYTIME I'm aware this might only happen in low elo with some specific supports (I'm looking at you brand and lux)

And I'm not directing hate towards Lux, because hell I'm a lux main and I also play lux support and I enjoy it.

Don't come at me telling I build AP items, yes I'm a terrible person and I enjoy having that damage, but it's just that don't get doran's ring at the beginning of the game, it's not beneficial for you as a support as you tend to lack gold sometimes (Future market I love).

I swear I'm going to weep if I see somebody take a doran's ring as support again, but luckily they dont happen on most supports. [sg-janna] [sg-lux-2] [sg-soraka]

[zombie-brand-facepalm] debatable, I think it's more of the player than the Lux tho. Although sadly, Lux players going support taking doran's ring is more than common than anything, but they're not doing it right.

The thing is, there is NOTHING a lux support does superior compared to a Velkoz support. Aside from having a flimsy shield. They picked her just because she is a blonde girl. No competitive value. at all.

Then again, because you think this champion or that champion is bad, doesn't mean other people don't have fun playing them. Obviously it'd be less enjoyable for you, but that's not something in our control unfortunately, just like how we can't pick our teams. I'm not saying Lux is an AMAZING SUPPORT CHAMPION WOW, she's not and she's obviously lacking in utility parts. [slayer-jinx-catface]

And also Lux has a shield, and Vel'Koz if I'm not mistaken, has only a slow and airborne for his CC, and the rest is pure damage, and not even a shield, although Vel'Koz can be played support, it's not the best option. Kind of like Lux. [sg-lulu]

No comment on the "blonde girl" thing, personally I don't agree but other people have their own opinions and I don't wanna assume.

Lux is a safer champ than velkoz, not just for herself, but for her lane partner. The snare is definitely superior CC to Velkoz knockup as it's easier to land.

I doubt that. You can QSS out of a snare. Not a stun+knockback. It also passes through minions and can hit more than 2 people.

(double snare, 5s slow and vision, and an ult that actually stays up and can be used from longer range)

Now a flimsy shield? 240+60%AP at level 10(tier 3) is the expectation, at tier 5 it's 330+60%AP(+10%H&S power) at T5 184 AP(Transcendance, Storm, AC, and AHG) that's around 484 shielding, and that's before adding more AP or time to the clock

...Why are you putting 3 points into lux's shield without levelling her Q and E the hell?

theChibiTina2 votes

If you want to be more defensive and not push the wave to hard when you're trying to poke then you could possibly max shield first. However they did say at level 10 meaning they put points into something else first (most likely E since that's your primary poke).

I've been playing a lot of Lux support and something I noticed is that Riot's recommended starting item for her is Doran's Ring. What the heck, Riot? Why would you have this recommended for supp Lux? It probably makes some Lux players think that's the right way to go when really it hobbles the team (less gold, less vision). I always go in and search for Spellthief's but I bet the recommended start affects a lot of player's builds. Please update this, Riot!

After the latest nerfs, even Rito's own item suggestion doesn't think it's worth buying anymore. =S

Because she's still considered primarily Mage secondary support.

Kattzy1 votes

Which seems weird to me since she's played slightly more frequently as supp than mid: https://champion.gg/champion/Lux/Support?league=platplus (link is for plat+, but I checked and it's similar across all elos).

Regardless, though, for a lot of mages who can go either mid or supp, Riot usually provides two options for recommended items - the list title will say Recommended Supp or Recommended Mid. Lux needs this treatment, imo.

Plebs I say.

Whenever I play Support, I buy 6 Culls.

idk, i would say people belong in wood 5 if they do that thing.

........ Yea sound like your running in to people who are filled at the support position that do that. I main Support and do take lux but always start spelltheifs....or occasionally coin if I want to take the more reliable gold route. And no I don't do i t because of the "blond" girl in fact blonds are my least favorite. I take lux because I have the elemental skin and its fun to try and fill up the bar as I play XD.

theChibiTina1 votes

Same. I never played lux and then I got the elemental skin from one of the Halloween orbs, so I was like "welp. Guess I gotta play lux now." lol

I don't know man if they keep nerfing the support items I might just start doing it too.

I believe people play AI a lot. Vs ai you can build whatever almost and win. Lux was a mage and most people just follow the suggested items on the shop screen. Also I'm guessing these players don't build armor/mr items to defend also?

atorelle1 votes

well, ais are ais.

hrooza dota 1 votes

i think its mostly a problem of them picking what the guide tell them since the guide still tell them to go doran ring on lux

CeruleanHawk2 votes

Which becomes a problem, because they don't make a different "Support" version of the recommended items list for Lux

atorelle1 votes

oof

It's not just on Lux though, but ngl I see most Lux supports taking doran's ring. like no stop it [sg-lulu] But I saw a Soraka support or something take doran's before so i don't know man

hrooza dota 1 votes

i wont deny some do it on propose.

but for luxs i feel they just follow the build blindly

Deliberate Inter1 votes

yeah but maybe at your mmr / level you shouldn't expect the supprot to know this every game and you forget that dorans gives the HP to allow for better trading and that staves off lethal and can make all the difference in ALL INS and let's be honest, early game all ins are what solo queue league is all about and when the game is decided at every level of play

atorelle1 votes

I mean, in what MMR or elo should a player ever think that buying Doran's over Spellthief's as a support would beb good? Doran's are never better for supports, and supports who normally take doran's as a starting item are normally mage squishy supports, which excluding some, do not like all-ins. As a support you shouldn't be worried about HP and stuff. If you're playing your champion correctly you won't be staving off lethal, and if you're managing your mana correctly you can still make the difference without lacking gold with a doran's ring.

"early game all ins are what solo queue league is all about and when the game is decided at every level of play" And this I won't even comment.

Inkling Commando1 votes

a support is useless without mana and Dorin gives more mana regen than the mana coins from Spellthief or Ancient Coin.

atorelle1 votes

if a support just relies on her mana then that's not a good support. obviously some champs are more mana hungry than others, but they should be managing their mana at a good level. also backing is a thing, and supports aren't mana-reliant, more skill-reliant.

atorelle1 votes

also please don't take doran's ring as support, especially not in ranked.

Inkling Commando1 votes

well seeing as i dont support and i never do ranked i automatically take your advice.

atorelle1 votes

this is moreso directed to people who do play support and should understand the role better? not sure if ur comment is sarcastic lol but you shouldnt be thinking supports taking doran's ring is good for them and the team. [slayer-jinx-catface]

Flashes1 votes

The only time I've done it was with Neeko support on accident, because it was off meta and I clicked all recommended items out of habit. I meant to get spellthief and ended up accidentally buying Doran's before realizing my mistake when I saw I wasn't getting gold procs.

atorelle1 votes

oof owo

atorelle1 votes

quick question, isnt it kinda general knowledge that you don't go doran's ring on supports? i kind of get it if you're fairly new to the game, but haven't you seen what other supports build? and also, if you see supports going doran's ring in your game, i'm not saying to flame them and be mad, (unless they're obviously trolling) just like remind them to not do that, because it really doesn't benefit them nor the team.
