Why do we give squishy champions resistances?

Honestly the only reason I can think of is so that it makes true damage not redundant when fighting squishies.

Everyone starts out (more of less) with some level of damage reduction. Why? Why not make that mainly a tanky thing? Obviously you'd have to lower the damage for every fighter and tank of both AD and AP, but yeah.

Wow this is a dumb as fuck idea.

With the way resistances work, every squishy would pick up a single defensive item because it'd be stupidly effective.

They actually intend to increase resistances for tanks, maybe they should do it for lvl1 as well. In that case, they probably should give decently high AD and ultra low AS to tanks, and a shared passive that gives them like 300% AS against minions, so as to be able to farm more efficiently if many minions get low at the same time.

Because then they get screwed by ranged characters.

Take melee Assassins in mid lane, for example. Zed and Talon mainly, but once upon a time it also featured Kha'Zix or Pantheon or Yi.

All these champions are melee. They begin at an inherent disadvantage towards a ranged champion.

Enter item 3155. The playing field is evened out.
