Recurve Bow item 1043 + Seeker's Armguard item 3191 + 800g = 2900g total

35 Ability Power 25% Attack Speed 45 Armor

Passive: Basic attacks deal 5(+15% AP) magic damage on hit.

Unique: Basic attacks grant 8% attack speed, 2.5% AP, and 2% pre-mitigated damage reduction for 5 seconds, stacking up to 6 times, granting a maximum of 48% attack speed, 15% AP, and 12% pre-mitigated damage reduction. At 6 stacks, gain MERLIN'S MIGHT. While at half stacks, melee champions' next basic attack will fully stack Merlin's Might.

Unique: MERLIN'S MIGHT: Half of the damage reduced by this item is reflected back at the attacker.

As you can tell, this item is very inspired by Guinsoo's Rageblade, but it is definitely more of a tank item. I wanted this to be for champions who scale with Ability Power, and excel in prolonged combat.

Gold efficiency 35 Ability Power [761.25g] 25% Attack Speed [625g] 45 Armor [900g] Total 2286.25g

Like with Guinsoo's Rageblade, this item is 70-80% gold efficient, but with full stacks it is closer to 200% gold efficient, or more when combined with other items.

I was initially considering this item with a Ruby Crystal, but I decided to intentionally not give flat health for this reason. I felt that Armor and Damage Reduction would be too strong when combined with flat health in the same item The player will need to buy a different item to give them Health, Magic Resistance, and/or additional Ability Power in order to increase the effectiveness of this item.

This would definitely be a good item for AP tanks DrMundo Gragas Nautilus Shen Shyvana TahmKench Volibear who also work well with on-hit damage, and AP fighters/skirmishers that need more resistances to survive extended fights Diana Ekko Elise Fizz Jax Kennen Orianna

I'm also going to throw this in here because I get these comments every time I pitch an item idea on here. No, this item is not necessary. None of these champions "NEED" this item in order to be relevant. I think this item would be an interesting option for many champions that I mentioned, and still others. I also fully expect that I am overlooking some champions / combinations that would be overly powerful with this item. I don't expect that it will be perfectly balanced as it is, and I would fully expect that Riot would need to do plenty of play-testing in order to find that balance. That is their job, and I would be happy to leave them to it.

Again, I simply think this, or an item similar to this would be an interesting addition to the game, and I am hoping that people will be willing to discuss this with me in a civil and constructive way.

Thanks :)

Sounds good, but I'm afraid it's going to be abused by on-hit marksmen such as Varus KogMaw Kaisa You know, I don't want them to build item 3812 item 3046 and said item to get a ridiculous amount of damage reduction

I don't really see this helping marksmen too much. Damage mitigation stats still require effective-health in order to be efficient. The three items you mentioned (including my item) would only accumulate effective-health through lifesteal, and Death's Dance trades its lifesteal for it's passive which heals based on physical damage. The three champions you gave as examples deal a good amount of magic damage. They still deal some physical damage, but the point is this passive would not do as well to provide effective health.

The Merlin's Might passive would also not be great for marksmen because it still requires that they continue to take damage, and marksmen generally want to disengage when taking damage.

I haven't completely settled on the functionality of this passive though. I was also thinking that this might not reflect damage back at the attacker, but instead it should reflect damage to enemies within an aura. This encourages players to take this on champions who will want to be in the middle of the skirmish, so again, not marksmen.

However, if a person wants to take a marksmen and build / play them like a tank, .. I don't necessarily see that as a problem either. It's odd, and it wouldn't be the most efficient way of playing that champion. They are immediately at a disadvantage because they don't have the base stats for it.

I also intentionally kept the ability power low to require another AP item. So if you took [MERLIN'S WARD] item 3148 item 3046 and maybe item 3151 this would be a great combo, .. but again, I think it would be better on any of the other champions I mentioned in my post than these three specifically.

I like it but o dont want anything to help this DrMundo unbalanced unhealthy trash design of a champion.

Lol Mundo pretty much scales off of everything but mana, .. so you're kind of backing me into a corner here.

Have a bigger item 1027 ?

well just rework mundo

To be honest, I'm not set on the effect that Merlin's Might gives. I would prefer that be a defensive effect, because I want the item to overall be defensive in nature, but I am thinking that it would probably still make more sense that it works with auto attacks. I was thinking of changing it so that every other, or every third auto attack will cause the target to burst, dealing splash damage to surrounding enemies. It would basically be like Tiamat, but dealing magic damage and ranged champions could use it. I guess it would be very similar to Kayle's E.

Idk, this is still an evolving idea.

Most of AP Champions rely on their abilities to do damage and less about their basic attacks so I think you should definitely include stack per Ability Cast. What I would do is

-Spellcasts and basic attack to give 1 stack -max stacks: 8

Is the item focused on Tankiness?

  • 5 AP per stack? Since it's focused around ability to take damage why give it late game scaling?
  • max % damage reduction: 20% (or 16%)?
