Unfortunately, Garen is following the trail Gangplank did before he got his rework

Before Gangplank had gotten his rework, it took a very long time and a ridiculous amount of empty threads until a Rioter finally decided to take it upon himself to look at Gangplank and put him in a better place. However, the trail Gangplank had to tread to get there was harsh. And unfortunately Garen is following the same trail with no better place in sight. To better understand what I'm talking about, let me tell you what Gangplank was like before getting his rework.

At the time, playing Gangplank could be a huge setback to his team due to being a slave to the RNG Gods with his Crits & Cannon Barrage and a weak laning phase against competent players. In order to even play Gangplank decently, you had to max his (W) for the obscene heal to even properly play him since maxing Q could make you go OOM quickly and E wasn't good at all other then just being a one point wonder that you shouldn't ever use until much later in the game. You primarily had to focus on just punishing obvious mistakes of your enemy laner to win which only worked up until Platinum or so.

Teammates would always tell you that Gangplank was terrible and could potentially harass you for playing him if you didn't do extraordinarily well with him as he wasn't up to par with the rest of the roster. It was terrible, yet the general forums was even worse. If you went to the forums to talk about Gangplank and possible changes for him, you were immediately shot down by posters who would tell you how "good" he was and how they just beat a game or two with him and thus needed no changes. Gangplank mains who wanted to see change had to make so many threads just to get something going as they were constantly brought down by people who refused to see something more for Gangplank and the majority on the forums who remained quiet and ignored Gangplank topics.

After a long period time and constant empty threads, Rioter Gmang, started a thread on Gangplank and wanted to give him a shot, and later he gave us a Gangplank that is now without a doubt in a better place than his previous iteration.

Garen as of late has been mirroring the fate Gangplank had prior to his rework. Starting a thread to say that Garen needs changes is brought down by people who say he is fine and posters who willfully ignore Garen topics. I'm not sure why people had such a bias against Gangplank back then and why it is applying to Garen now...

The Juggernaut patch "rework", which had gutted Garen of his HP/LV growth, gave him a weaker (Q) & lower MS, and a removal of (W)'s Tenacity in return for a Quasi-RNG True damage he can't control is bleeding through more and more. The rework didn't address Garen as a champion and the Villian mechanic that was thrust onto him has failed to give anything meaningful besides a few random situations to where it works only somewhat well. After the nerfing of the overtuned Juggernaut items and the movement speed items, Garen has fallen while his dark twin, Darius, has remained in a balanced state... It's very unfortunate see Garen be put in such a low state and be rendered a champion stuck to being "an easy champion" and be mediocre and at times very weak while Sivir, Annie, Kayle, Ryze, Soraka, Poppy, and Nunu remain good or very strong picks.

And so, I write this in hopes that a Rioter and most importantly you, as your participation and willingness matters most will make the time to discuss Garen to bring him to a state of balance that can bring forth new opportunities for him while remaining recognizable as the Might of Demacia.

I really want this to happen.

Last night I played Garen and did really well early and mid game, however once the big teamfights rolled around, I was usually the last to die due to my tankiness but they largely ignore me due to my relative lack of damage.

Watching my carries die to a ghosted Olaf while I could do nothing frankly made me feel like https://i.ytimg.com/vi/tV2ZbaKKCec/hqdefault.jpg

But I hope one day that The Might of Demacia shall rise again and the rift will be lit with http://i.imgur.com/W0wVY4c.gif?Noredirect

Honestly...

Why doesn't Garen have his punch back? The theme of his rework was sort of this space marine armored guy, except space marines punch people too so wtf rito srsly.

His lategame was actually improved, so I wouldn't call it a 100% unsuccessful rework. A lot of his kit turned into something that can carry a game if you got enough kills and a 1k+ true damage ult is going to GAREN-TEE that if the enemy team relies on one person to carry they are quite mistaken in doing so.

Old gp was one of my favorite melee champions. I have only distaste for playing as or against current gp.

Garen certainty needs some touching up, but I don't think it needs to be anything severe. Some number tuning would be nice. Maybe some sort of a slow resist while his W is active to make it harder for him to be easily kited by items like item 3116 would prove to be helpful as well as slightly increasing the W duration at later levels which should help him a bit in the late-game.

I have never seen a Garen receive amount of hate from teammates anything near of what old GP did.

While I am only plat, and I guess high-ELO players might hate him more, old GP was wholeheartedly hated all the way down to silver.

According to probuilds.net, among pro players Garen has BY FAR the lowest play rate of any champion and is sitting at a 0% win rate. Folks who think Garen is in an ok place, or even "strong", simply don't have a clue....

I think garen has one of the most unfair and frustrating laning phases in the game, if youre a ranged champion he can do just about nothing aside from all inning you with flash, if youre a melee champion your at his mercy witg how his trading pattern and fallback pattern works

I want to ses all champions be fun and viable for the people who play them but i wanna see the things that make garen so terrible to play against fixed along with it

old GP was hilarious, he had overwhelming potential to kill everyone in the game 1v1 with a versatile number of builds providing he survived past the 20min mark. the 1k parley crits and he could stack 2 armour items. survive a jax + yasuo and still walk up to people and crit their faces off. If old Gp existed in this season with the keystone masteries, no doubt he would have adapted to almost all of them in some form and wreaked havoc on soloq. 1.5k targeted crits with storm raiders surge, deer god.

One thing i miss terribly from Old Gp was the ridiculously over-exaggerated pirate speak l0l. New GPs voiceover is just terrible in comparison, they killed the comedy.

However I do not feel the same about garen who I believe is on the stronger side of balanced as he can actually stand and bang against most top laners as well as having a decent execute ability. I dunno when's the last time riot reworked someone like garen who i consider the generic archetype sword guy. They'd probably have to rewrite his lore or something to get a rework going.

Like with every failed rework Repertoir is the main problem.

Moonmàn10/24/2016, 3:11:17 PM1 votes

The only problem with this is old Gangplank had a better playstyle than the current bitchplank.

I think Garens kit is fine as it is. GIve him a better HP scaling or something is OK, but just numerical buffs. He is a very simple champion that excels in SIlver and Bronze, but is - as you say - practically not an option at higher elos. He is basically the opposite of Lee Sin; Lee should simply not be played by low elo players, as they lack the mechanics to utilize his (very high) potential. To pick Lee in bronze is like picking Garen in Master - you are likely losing your team the game, or requiring another player to hardcarry. But this is not a problem IMO, with 131 champions left to choose from, both the Master and the Bronze will surely find something he likes.
