...good God the game is toxic.

My last game had the enemy team bitching at everyone else, calling them "Feeders", "Bad", etc. and -- when I mentioned that I do have ADHD/autism in defense of MF calling people autistic, she responded with "oh, so a retard", which made me shrug and say "Well, I'm smarter than you I guess." -- worse, that entire situation was way, way too creepily reminiscient of my past wins and losses.

I have kept track; So far, 17 of my past 20 games have had that kind of toxic, incredibly unenjoyable vibe to them thanks to the incessant flame. I even had to explain to numerous people how the game's state is a source of toxicity, which did give them pause. I'm not one to defend toxic behaviour, but... with the current state of the game, I implore Riot and everyone else to ease up on the bans, toxic responses and apathy. This goes for anyone on your team and theirs.

This game isn't fun for some people in it's current state. They can't quit playing because they either hold out hope or are addicted to it anyway. Please, please show a bit of empathy to them -- talk to them about how unfun and frustrating the game is, if you want to talk to them at all, and maybe try to find ways to make it a better place for you both. Don't start saying "Yeah MF you're dumbass", "Yeah Olaf you suk", "Yeah ur bad Morgana" in reply since that makes them -- and whoever else is in their next few games -- even more unpleasant... and it contributes to the issue the game has with toxicity to boot, moreso now than ever.

TL; DR for clarity;

I see. So you mean something along the lines of this?

Tanks exploding as fast as they do creates frustration in that the losing team can never have a frontline in the tanks fear of exploding in .5 so the tank gets flamed for not engaging? So after the tank gets flamed he starts inting? xD

Pretty much.

Toxicity might make the game less fun but you know what else makes the game less fun? Feeding laners.

Players that repeatedly feed are going to and in a way deserve to be flamed.

They have to learn to get good some way and them constantly ruining other peoples games with nobody telling them they are bad/need to get better is not the solution.

I get better by getting flamed when I play like shit and that's basically how it works for everyone.

Inari Fox Orrion1 votes

That's how it works for you, and you cannot speak for everyone. I'm not saying that people need to quit the toxicity, though; I'm saying people need to be more empathetic towards the toxic players. People are flaming and/or being toxic because the game isn't fun to play, it's frustrating to deal with.

Edit: Someone flaming me would end with me muting them and not caring whatsoever what they have to say, or doing whatever annoys them even more... regardless of how constructive their critique is. They need to be polite and respectful when addressing me, and in turn I'll do the same for and to them. It's who I am.

Pretty much, and it'd be resolved if instead of "God U suk Galio" people were like "Tanks die fast, that is how it is. We still need a front line, I'm sorry." The toxicity is diffused by recognizing that it's just making the game state even worse. That tank would probably go on to do a few more games later-on, with the reinforced behaviour and thought-process that "Everyone's an asshole, cooperation be fucked."

I don't think that's healthy. The toxicity is made worse by the game state to the point it's spreading because it now can't be avoided, even in gameplay.

Seriously though, i quit league back in S5, I came back and tanks are no longer tanks, there are only bruisers now lol. anyone else remember when tanks had super low damage but were nigh unkillable without a team? back when tanks actually relied on SUNFIRE cape as a viable damage source? yeah i remember those days, it was a good time to be a tank lol. I think the problem is with some of the items, there's more DAMAGE in the game, but less HEALTH, and since conq and pta became a thing a percentage of all the resistances you buy just arent actually there anymore.

I actually don't give a fuck getting flamed by 12 yr old insecure childs that will gladly ruin your gameplay. Ppl saying that toxicity makes the game less fun are too sensitive for this world. Why do ppl care what someone says about them when it doesn't mean shit?

"That have a bad mental" is an incomplete thought that actually legitimately means nothing. Please consider ACTUALLY finishing your thought next time.

As to the other half of your sentence... 'less fun' is subjective, so whether something makes the game more or less fun is up to each individual to decide. No, it doesn't 'factually make it less fun for everyone' because that is impossible as fun is not an objective measure and there is no one true way to fun.

For example, there are some people who are just jerks and want to bicker. For them, verbal toxicity is probably hilarious. I'd argue they're the minority and I'd really rather they NOT be a part of the game community personally... but that's not my decision to make. There are also people who just mute everyone. Verbal toxicity doesn't affect them at all because they never see it.

Personally, verbal toxicity ABSOLUTELY makes the game less fun for me. Not because I'm 'sensitive' but because it is simply a complete and total waste of my time to have to read such utterly worthless drivel in the chat. I'd rather focus on winning the game and have chat be clear of non-essential messages OR have chat contain a productive conversation.

This is a video game,as in the only thing that can affect your "fun" is gameplay. Only gameplay related things can possibly ruin your fun. If your fun is ruined by things outside gameplay, then that is a personal issue. I mean for now this is my opinion,i don't know if it is factual yet.

Wow. Just, no. People can have off games. EVERYONE does -- and they don't all appreciate the received assholery for it. Believe it on not, it isn't usually beneficial.

e.g. Ez saying, "hey, can you not auto the minions?" instead of, "do you not know how to support!?" The first is good advice for a support who may not know how to help an ADC control a wave -- but flatly insulting someone never accomplishes anything. Even if you say you improve from being flamed, how are you going to know where to improve? Open ended insults don't help anything. You may want to play better, but you're receiving 0 guidance from someone that may actually see a flaw in your playstyle, but isn't bothering telling you what it is.

Also, you're much more likely to respond positively to something phrased kindly, rather than aggressively. I find it very difficult to believe that someone saying "are you blind? how did you not see him walk past that ward?" is encouraging to many people (though, still infinitely better than just calling someone a dumbass, and being done with it).

Besides, it would be incredibly naive to believe everyone reacts the same way as you to a given stimulus. Personally, if i don't mute the person flaming me, I will tilt very fast.

What makes my blood boil is people not surrendering games when games are automatically lost. I'd rather play another game rather than be stuck in a game for 40 minutes for a 5% change of winning. This is more prevalent in NA because after all, it's a 4FUN region.

Inari Fox Orrion1 votes

It's more like the "NoFF" mentality is more common in N.A and people often justify it. The thing is, DotA2's community should teach people why that is a bad idea. I cannot recall one single match in the 1k hours in DotA2 where there hasn't been some kind of toxicity, and that's just fucking miserable. In place of FF/surrendering, in DotA2 we have: people who leave match followed by everyone else in the match, people who buy stealth items and press the button in trees near waves, and people who play Techies, place mines everywhere and sit in fountain when their team does either of the two previous things (hi! <3)

I'm not saying an unfun game that frustrates you or the feeling you're stuck and forced to waste time are sources of toxicity, but they correlate heavily. Heavily.

People surrendering when they reach a nearly-insurmountable-in-the-current-situation deficit (seriously, we could win if we all became Faker and Mid stopped inting... but uh, that isn't gonna' happen is it?) saves time and effort and frustration.

You think I'm justifying toxicity? There is no justification for it, but there are things that make it worse and less unlikely, and one of those things is an enviroment that promotes it via a feeling of helplessness, so people raise their voice until they're heard.

Read it again without "Oh toxicity is being justified!" in mind. Try to understand the toxic people, even if that doesn't excuse them because as I said, the game's current state makes it easier to get frustrated and be toxic as a whole.

I can't understand anyone who would voluntarily step into an experience that has an approximately 50% chance of being something they hate.

If I couldn't enjoy this game when losing, I'd never play it... because I KNOW I'm going to have a near-50% loss rate, since that's how a properly matched system SHOULD be. So I don't feel bad for people who get upset at being FORCED TO PLAY THE GAME THEY VOLUNTARILY STEPPED INTO. Sorry. It might be harsh of me, but that's the long and short of it. You stepped into the game knowing that there is a near-50% chance of losing. If you're unwilling to play those games that you lose, then you shouldn't be playing at all.

Learn to enjoy PLAYING LEAGUE OF LEGENDS and not just the 'Victory!' screen, and maybe you won't feel the need to surrender so often. If you actually just straight up enjoy the game and are focused on improving as a player and enjoying your time... even losses will still be valuable to you.

But if you'd prefer to hate life 50% of the time you play... then by all means, keep it up. But... if someone doesn't WANT to surrender because they have a healthy mindset and, as a result, simply enjoy playing the game so see no reason to surrender, don't come crying to me when you're miserable. Because it's your own fault. And I'll point it out to you again like I'm doing now.

Inari Fox Orrion1 votes

You think I'm talking about losing? No. Games like Dark Souls and the like can prove that losing is fun, and... hell, Dwarf Fortress has that as a tagline: "Losing is Fun™" I'm saying the way Riot has their game set up, as of now, the losing team rarely if ever feels like they could've actually done anything better beyond something basic, i.e hitting a skill-shot, and often it feels like -- and the boards are full of these complaints -- once they have a lead, there is nothing reasonable to be done about it.

Being stomped on for 15 minutes is not fun, and serves no purpose to the victors or the people defeated, and no-one in the world signs up for that. If you tried that on me in a spar, I would hold a knife to your neck. You show respect to your opponent, it's that simple... and you don't show respect to them through a one-sided, hopeless 15-minute stomp-fest.

By the way, 50/50 W/L does not persist when, say, their ADC is 14/0 and yours is 0/14. Statistically, those "equal" players are no longer equal because one has an advantage the other does not. That is when you surrender: when that chance of losing far, far outweighs the chance of winning and the fun of doing so.

You seem to come at me with a cynical view on everything I'm saying. I don't know if I should be insulted by that, or mildly annoyed with it because I have to explain it again and again, so here it goes; I am not saying toxicity is justified. I am not saying 50/50 W/L is bad. I am not saying the game is bad. I am saying, plain and simple, that the current incarnation of the game reinforces toxicity through unavoidable deaths that reflexes nor skill can save you from, through information obscuration, through a toxic community that replies to toxicity with toxicity and therby makes even more people miserable, and through an unfun/unfair system for handling trolls and griefers.

If Riot wants a better community, the best place to start is to make the game less frustrating to play, win or lose... and how they go about that is giving players agency in the game. If I feel like I had control of the situation where five people jumped on me under tower at Lv1 (i.e I felt like if I E'd right I'd get FB before them, for example) in place of being instantly-killed the moment Kha hit me, I would blame myself for that... and not the game for having damage so high that they can nuke me before I react.

I don't know if I'd call the view cynical. I'd say it's possibly overly optimistic honestly. Literally my last ranked game, you can look it up if you like, the enemy had a 6 kill Mundo super early. He was practically unkillable and single-handedly won the game by jush pushing all day and all night. Even when we brought our entire team against him, he'd kill 1-2 of us and a tower before we got him down. Yet I still enjoyed the game. We stood no chance, they had a raidboss, and it didn't matter how bad the rest of their team was, that raidboss won it. But I was laughing my ass off for most of the game at how absurd it was.

You should be able to enjoy even the games you have no chance. Even the games that the enemy wrecks you. If you enjoy League of Legends as a game, then other peoples' performance shouldn't really impact your ability to enjoy the game. Now... if everyone's being a total jerk about it, that's a different story... but a person with a healthy approach to the game should be able to focus solely on their own performance, and enjoy the game as long as they are happy with how they played, regardless of the outcome.

If I go 0/1/8 as a support and hit my CC and ward well, even if my team loses and the enemy adc is like 13/1/10... I can still feel happy about the game as a whole, because I did everything I could and I enjoy the act of playing the game.

I feel like if you DON'T enjoy the simple act of playing the game, even against extreme adversity, then it is the wrong game for you. This is what should be fun. The act of playing the game. It shouldn't be ONLY the enemy nexus blowing up that you enjoy.

Inari Fox Orrion1 votes

The thing is, that's what makes up a medium of the LoL community: those who enjoy victory. That's why ranked exists, isn't it? They've won a lot, and can be proud of that. There isn't any pride in "I climbed to <rank> as Ahri Support!"... for most people.

The very act of playing the game is fun, for some. Not all.

Personally, if I'm playing a champion I love (Ahri, Lux) then I really don't care if we win or lose, but that doesn't change anything about what I say, since I'm not really saying it for my benefit. My opinion isn't everyone elses', and the entire post is about everyone elses' opinion and how Riot's current design -- based around extremely-quick and helpess death where you can't even play the game for 5-75s -- helps people along the path of being toxic.

I guess we just differ in opinion, which is fine.

The thing is, that's what makes up a medium of the LoL community: those who enjoy victory. That's why ranked exist, which has one measure of power: win or lose... and it's why people enjoy climbing the ranks, isn't it? They've won a lot, and can be proud of that.

The very act of playing the game is fun, for some. Not all. You can't expect everyone to love the idea of being helpless when it comes to winning the game so they can climb, for example... especially when a lot of the community uses ranks as a badge of validity for what you say.

Personally, if I'm playing a champion I love (Ahri, Lux) then I really don't care if we win or lose, but I do care if people don't demonstrate a willingness to try or listen because they're being disrespectful -- towards me, towards the people trying to win, name it, but they don't care about that at all and that's what annoys me.

I do envy the people able to enjoy games like NiOh or LoL despite all of the flaws, but I personally cannot ignore them.

If you're playing a game that is designed to keep you close to a 50% win rate and ALL you like is victory, I feel like you're making a bad decision.

Logically speaking, it's a waste of your time. You're volunteering for an experience you're going to hate half the time.

That isn't to say that people who simply like playing the game don't like winning MORE. Of course they do. You should. Because success feels amazing - everyone loves success.

What I am saying is that if you DON'T enjoy the game on its own, then you should find a game you DO enjoy for itself. Because then you'll be having fun ALL the time, and simply having MORE fun when you win. As opposed to playing a game that you hate half the time, but enjoy when you win.

Inari Fox Orrion1 votes

Tell that to them, not me. I don't care much about winning or losing. I do, however, care a lot about how peoples' toxicity ruins my game and spreads into other matches on top of that! I blame the people for toxicity, but I blame Riot for making it even worse through how they have their players interact with each-other and the game itself, which is to say they often make it so you just can't... at least in this meta.

Honestly? I think that is the one deciding factor of how frustrating a loss (or game in general) is: how long it prevents you from interacting with it. Games where you can get right back in (most rogue-likes, most BR's, most ARPGs) are less irritating than games where it takes a long, long time to get back to trying again. There are fringe cases where people can end up frustrated for other reasons, but they are rarer than the people who get frustrated with a game for not letting them actually play it.

People are toxic because this season depends on teams playing safe more than any other season. If one team mate on your team is 2/13 (Which happens a lot), then its going to be a hard game to win. And almost every game there is what I like to call "The Three Musketeers", where on the losing team there is at least 3 players doing insanely bad. As in going 1/9, not cooperating in team fights, or just useless in general because they dont cs. Just look at your match history, look on the losing side, and see if you can spot these three players. Thats why I call it "The Three Musketeers".

I don't know if we play the same game or not.Asking or telling someone politle to stop doing something or to help DOESN'T WORK.Why?Because RIOT and there idiotic ban system created enviorment when people can get away with trolling aslong they keep there mouth shut. And when you go into the game you just fear how much trolls will you have, not flamers. It's start from picking phase.Someone take your role, ban you champ on purpose, troll pick or something else. You already get tilted, but you keep your cool and don't say anything, you think i will try my best and we can still win.Game start those people proceed to soft int, troll. You still keep your mouth shut and have some hope.Game ends you lose and the troll says he will report you.You report him.Who have bigger chance of getting puneshment - YOU.Why?Because the troll do everything in his power to provoke you, and if you say one thing,JUST ONE THING, you can lose your account.Someone says. "don't lose your coll. stay chill".Good advice but when this happens in 60% of your games it's hard to not tilt and get provoked.

Youre right, this game and community is incredibly toxic. One thing that I've found helps a LOT is going into settings and disabling "/ALL" chat.

During the game in all likelyhood /all chat would mostly be used for toxicity, and if you respected an opponent you can always tell them post game.

But i've noticed games, at least as far as chat , are a lot more pleasant since i Disabled all chat.
