Trying Sion out, he feels a bit like a weak Malphite

The damage in lane is very nice, but the reason we roll tanks is for engages and sions ult is way less reliable than malphites ult. Also Malphites Q is auto targetted where as sion has to hit skill shots on his E.

What do you guys think about Sion's power level in this meta and his character in general?

imo he could get the nerfs reverted that they gave him because of cinderhulk, now that cinderhulk has been nerfed.

honestly, i dont know why they bothered nerfing cinderhulk in top lane anyways. i thought it was interesting that smite could be taken into lane. i only see teleport these days, and the rare ignite. seing people chose between smite, ignite, and tp equally often made the lane much more interesting.

but eh, thats what they rolled with.

Sion has a stronger laning phase than Malphite. Malphite has very high mana costs, particularly on his Q, and Sion's passive at early levels is VERY scary. He can secure a kill after a death from a gank quite easily.

Sion has high mana costs as well. You basically have to land a stun/for higher damage and make sure his W damage procs or else it's a complete waste. You get fucked by agile top laners like Riven who will dodge everything. His E has really low mana cost though so that's alright. It's not too bad if you miss his E.

Walk up to an enemy, E him for the armor shred and then Q him for a good chunk of their health. If they're dumb they'll be positioned for you to get a minion wave in the stun too.

If you want to compare Sion to Malphite purely on grounds of reliability, then sure, Malphite is absolutely more reliable than Sion. However, Sion has far more crowd control and similar levels of damage and tankiness, and while his ult is more difficult to use, it can be used to initiate from practically the other end of the map, and has a much lower cooldown.

Overall, I think Sion might be a bit on the weak side right now, mainly because he was nerfed at a time when tank items were too strong, and was left in a slightly unsatisfying state thereafter. I'd personally revert the nerf to his shield detonation time and bring it back to 2 seconds, as it's what kicked him out of the jungle (alternatively, he could lose the damage reduction on his Q against monsters), but other than that he's not in bad shape.

sion can lock down a group of targets for far longer than malphite can. mal is a one trick pony, he ults and does nothing else lol...
