By hitting mana regen (especially mana font) to the point that it wasn't worth buying over an early Morello's rush.

The new meta that you've formed gives almost all midlaners Grievous Wounds right around the end of the laning phase.

Let's have a moment for the champions indirectly nerfed hard by this change...

Yup, morello's passive means it should be a niche buy against healing champs Or non-ap champs. I don't like it's reign of terror in the midlane at the moment, the item is comparatively way too strong for cost.

But that issue is basically a dead horse by now

Honestly, they need to give Chalice its old passive back. The reason, or so I thought, that RIot made it the best mana managment item was because Morello was ment to be a niche pickup against healers. Now its mandatory. This is awful.

I mean, Imagine if Executioners calling gave 80 AD, 20% Crit Chance, and then had the grievous wounds passive. It would be the same problem.

Ironically, this is part of the reason why the Executioner's Calling was preemptively removed.

It just so happens that these champions weren't played that often before the change in the first place. Makes me sad, although I still play Swain and Vlad quite a bit since they're so unique and fun. Actually, quite a bit of these champs are really unique and fun!

Riot please make item 3165 a niche buy! Executioner's Calling was completely niche due to its incredible grevious wounds passive but it's terrible stat spread and gold inefficiency (unless playing against a select few champs). Not saying should be nerfed to that status, but at least make other items more appealing.

I personally think having to worry about mana is stupid, mana pools should just be like energy pools that take 1 minute to fill or something like that.

As a swain main, I sort of enjoy when players rush morellos. Without getting the mr the grail adds they have to play nearly perfect in positioning and because of that it is much easier to play agressively and zone them out of cs. Swain doesn't really win most lanes because he has sustain against caster match-ups.it normally happens because people take 1 or 2 e+ autos and drop into the 1 shot threshold.

Really, laning phase got a buff or stayed the same for swain, and the matchups where morellonomicon is the largest threat is in the already unfavorable matchups, such as Lux, Oriana, Karma. (and he probably shouldn't be picked against these champs anyway).

So honestly, I'm not even sure i'd call it a nerf to swain.

It definitely is annoying later in the game, but most people late game would pick one up anyway if facing swain on a caster.

I can't speak on behalf of the other champs as I really don't know the matchups that well, but I don't think swain should belong on that list.

I'd say change Morello's to not have GW Make Mana Font not work off total mana.

Give a better source of Grievous Wounds. Something that's not so gimmicky. Something anyone can pick up. That way healing champs can be balanced around the fact it should be something they have to face.

Not sure exactly how they would add this. But think having it fight an item slot doesn't really work. I don't mind Morello's being the best mana regen item and being seen more. I have a problem that it is the only option. And it will honestly only be picked up by a few champions. The rest require Ignite.

You cannot balance heals on such a niche mechanic.

Ironically even though Morde relies on spellvamp and his ult healing(not like he drops to 40% hp anyway), he is actually thriving in this meta since mid laners don't have as much mana as they used too and such get out tempo'd and shield sustained by mordekaiser

i don't see all these problems with morello. If a mage want to go for full burst damage, they just go for the traditional way of DFG-Rabadon-Void Staff-Zhonya-boots. Morello doesn't kick in before the 6th item maybe(and even then, it's likely that at some point a mage should get some kind of Mr resistence through GA or Abyssal) If a mage wants a lot of mana sustain to spam skills, still Athene or Seraph represent the best picks for sustain, then they could also add Morello, but it is still secondary There are the champs that synergize with Rylai/Liandry too, there are the champions that pick RoA for Ap + some form of sustain. there are a lot of other niche picks available as Ap items

I don't see Morello as a must do for all of these AP champs, tbh. Of course, Athene being nerfed put Morello on the spotlight again, and people start to saw that it was a really powerful item. But mid laners have plenty of choices to go that doesn't include Morello in. On a side note, Morello has becomed almost essential for AP based supports, becasue as a jack-of-all item for guys which have a limited amount of item spots available (because of gold item/boots/sightstone taking up 3 spots till very late game) its is really really good, especially looking at that 20% CDR

I expect to see a stat change or a price change on that item in the very near future.

Also I would hope to see a new or different item option for mana in the mid lane, perhaps a change to Tear would be nice to make it a more viable item. Personally if it was more like Seeker's Armgaurd so building to Archangel's was not so thankless.

Nobody likes Vlad, Swain, or Fid anyway. The rest of the champs on that list already suck, not like Morellos is suddenly taking them off the 'top picks 2015' list.
