What if Crits weren't chance based but a resource bar?

There's been a lot of complaints about crit in the past. Some of it because of randomness. Some of it because too much burst damage.

That got me to thinking, what if riot converted critical hits from a chance based system to a resource based system. While attacking in combat, each hit fills up your crit bar. Once it is full, your next attack crits. If you leave combat, the bar starts to deplete. Items therefore would be rebalanced make the bar go up faster or slower. Another thing that could be done is make the speed of the crit bar fill based on how tanky the target the person hitting is. Tankier targets generate more crit bar and squishier ones generate less. This would let ADCs tank bust like they need to while giving squishy champs a chance to react.

The idea has been around for some time as "energized" attack which is mechanically the same as you describe it, but it didn't solve more problems than it caused which is why the idea didn't become to popular.

Well, the problem is that energized was item specific and didn't replace crit. If anything, made things worse as an energized attack can also crit and there goes a helluva lot of HP.

They should remove crit completely from the game. The RNG nature of it makes it too hard to balance. At low crit percentage levels, you can get lucky and crit twice in a row and completely delete your opponent. And conversely, if you rely on crit to be able to take down targets, it may fail you and you get demolished. Except for specific champions that have empowered attacks (like Yi's E or Vayne's W), auto attacks should dish out a predictable amount of damage which is much easier to balance.
