AFK Intermediate Bots

Obviously there are more pressing issues that affect a larger section of the community, but here's something you could do the stop new people from losing interest in your game.

So I created a smurf (not really cause I'm probably not high enough to have a smurf) to play with a friend who was leveling up their new account. I was playing my FWOTD bonus game where my team ran 3 smites and our Sivir called jungle. Ok, whatever team, I'll carry even if you don't know what you're doing.

Get into game and our Sivir kills one or two camps, buys a item 3751 and then sits in the bot river bush AFK letting the burn aggro scuttle and keep her in game. I ping her a few times since the enemy bots are taking top and bot outer towers because I'm roaming between the two trying to defend, our Yi and Sej jungle are busy jungling, and our Karma mid doesn't appear to know how to play the game yet (nothing wrong with that). The Sivir responds with "I have 500 ping, what do you want?" to which I replay, "Sit under a tower and hit WQ." Eventually I got fed up with her and killed scuttle, which lead to her flaming me for a bit before wandering up to top river and sitting in that bush, so I killed that scuttle as well. She then declares "if you want to troll me, I'll just feed down mid."

Yes, I am picking a fight with her by killing the scuttle crab and thus preventing her from AFKing, but seriously, I'm trolling her? No, I'm preventing you from being AFK in a gamemode meant to teach new people about a game about TEAMWORK.

I'm actually lucky enough to know the game well enough that I can 1v5 vs bots (which really isn't that hard even without damage item; buy ZZ'rot, place near enemy tower in clear view, easy tower taken cause bots won't clear it). Bots are predictable so they are easy to outplay. Some people don't know that yet and can't carry bot matches when some teammates refuse to do anything.

Honestly, I feel like something needs to be done about this. This happened a lot when I was new to this game, and I didn't know what was going on at the time but I do now and it needs to stop. Certain you could add something to the code for Bot games specifically that if a player isn't standing in fountain and they haven't auto attacked in a while and/or they aren't moving around, disconnect them. I've had so many games of the person who calls jungle, buys 3 controls wards, place one in krugs, and then sits AFK around the back side of krugs letting their auto attacks aggro the krugs before they reset. It's frustrating to see even when I know how to play the game that I'm sure someone just learning is even more frustrated that their team is trolling them.

This is clearly not someone who is new to the game and failing at killing something or dying to Red buff. This is a person who wants free EXP/IP while they AFK for 20-40 minutes.

Honestly, I would love this as a coder. Do something that if they AFK attack the jungle for that long, the jungle actually comes to get revenge. Have krugs patience meter extend and give them plus AD/armor so that they can make it around the wall and actually kill the person who's been bullying them all game. Or if someone is doing the Bami's Cinder approach, have Dragon/Rift Herald/Baron come and kill them for fun. I think it would be a funny way to prevent this from happening. You have so many little gags in the code like making scuttle dance with Tahm and such that I think adding something like this would be hilarious to those playing the game properly and actually punish those abusing the jungle for IP/EXP. You'd only have to have this if bots are in the game so add a "is this a bot game" flag so it does happen during normal games and volia, a way to help stop AFK IP/EXP farming.

This player is still continuing to do this too, so it's not like this is the only game they've done this in. On OP.GG I can see that 23 of their 26 bot games they did this strategy. In only 4 of those 23 games did they buy anything in addition to their Bami's Cinder. So, assuming they were playing in those 4 games, in 70-ish% of their bot games they are just trolling their team. Tell me why this account is still allowed to do this with such a high rate of trolling?

Or you can just report them for afk and explain how they afk'd. Sounds a lot simpler then the shenanigans you propose.

I did report them, but how does that stop them from doing it to other players, which they have done and continued to do after my game? If I am the only one who reports them cause I'm the only person who knows what they are doing (assuming the new players believe the "500 ping, can't play" bullshit), how is that going to get them punished for this behavior?

I've reported so many people for intentionally feeding or AFKing in my ranked matches and only seen 1 of them get punished for it, so why would I expect Riot to care about someone AFKing in bot game?

All I'm suggesting is add a little code to bot games to root out these people to help newer players enjoy the game more. When people AFK in your ranked matches, you get annoyed with them too, why is this any different? To a new player, bots can be challenging enough with 5 people trying to work together. When it becomes a 4v5 because someone doesn't want to play the game for 20 minutes, it makes it harder for new people to learn.

It doesn't stop them, at least depending on their track record. If they keep doing it and Riot keeps getting reports on them then eventually they will get punished for it.

Coming up with silly shenanigans isn't good for the game, thats just more bloated code they have to keep track of and more chances for things to go tits up at some point when bugs eventually will show up. As funny as it may be, its just not a solution.

EDIT: Only the person on who's report Riot acted will get a message that their report did something, just because you only ever saw a guy get punished once doesn't mean that all your other reports are in vain, they keep a record of this stuff for future reference. You just don't see the effects of it.

Obviously your reports still has an affect, but after reporting say 100 players, you'd think you'd get more than one insta feedback, especially when you can see consistent example in their history like this in players case. I had a Trundle in ranked admit in chat he was going to feed mid and then fed 20 some kills. Tell me their system doesn't see that and do something about it on it's own. How is there not something in their code that someone typing "I'm gonna feed" not result in the system flagging the game immediately, adding extra emphasis to look at this game if people afterwards report them for feeding.

I highly doubt someone is going to randomly admit to intentionally feeding the first time they decide to troll. It's only after they haven't been punished for it that they realize they can get away with trolling like that. Like with this player, they got away with their bami's cinder trick 20 some games before getting into my game where I wasn't going to put up with it. In most of their games they had a 0/0 score except mine where they were 0/10 cause they fed.

So either the people they had played with before didn't know what they were doing, in which case they probably didn't report them, or they did and didn't care, in which case they probably didn't report them as well. Considering most people won't report even when the person is feeding/AFK in ranked games, I doubt someone is going to care that much about a bot game.

Actually its not obvious at all, your own statement pretty much proves that (Report a 100 players, only get 1 feedback. If the system did have obvious effects people like you would not be making these kinds of posts. XD). Only people that read the information from Riots website know these things, or if they hear it on the forum from other people.

The system probably isn't as automated as you want it to be due to easy mistakes such a system can make. How is such a system to differentiate between a real troll and friends just goofing off and having a laugh? It pretty much can't without player reports. I'd rather err on the side of caution then get auto banned for shit I didn't do or only did because I was playing only with friends.

It's obvious to anyone who has a brain and believes in the company running the game. I got a feedback for my report, clearly someone was punished because I reported. I would still like to be notified though for the other 99 if they are punished to feel like my reports mean something for all the ranked/normal games that were thrown by allies or at least have some in game justice for having to put up with trolls in a teaching simulator match.

Even if all the system did was keep track of the last week of reports against every player and notify those who reported them in the last week before they were punished, it would be better than only 1 person being notified.

Date - Reporter - Reportee - Reason 1/16/2017 - James - Harry - Feeding 1/17/2017 - Anna - Harry - AFK, Feeding, Harrassment 1/20/2017 - Steve - Harry - AFK 1/20/2017 - Nona - Harry - Harrassment, Racial slur <- Punishment Issued

All those people who reported then get notified that a player they reported was punished. They may not know it's Harry specifically and they won't know what he was punished for, but they are least know a report they filed lead to something happening to someone the felt was toxic.

I never said auto banned. I'm suggesting an in game punishment that doesn't affect their account standing while questioning why this is allowed to even go on after 19+ games of the same thing. The player getting mad at me for clear scuttle clearly indicates that I was right in my assumption of what they were doing and that is my in game justice cause I ruined their AFK fest. I played one game with this person, saw their behavior and items, saw how they reacted to me ruining what I assumed was their goal, then looked up their match history afterwards and saw a pattern. How hard is it for a program to notice the same pattern I saw? The game already has a "do something or be kicked" flag so adding something to look for these patterns shouldn't be difficult. I don't actually know how long it takes before the AFK check kicks in, but for my examples I'm going to use 3 minutes.

They haven't moved for 3 minutes in a bot game, yet are doing damage without auto attacks or abilities in that time frame. Look at items. They have bami cinder/sunfire/cinderhulk or any other passive damaging items/ability I'm forgetting (Blitzcrank ult passive comes to mind). Threaten to kick player.

They haven't moved for 3 minutes in a bot game, yet have done damage to Krugs and reset it 20 times. Look at items. They have no items or they only have control wards. Threaten to kick player.

Or even simpler: They haven't moved for 3 minutes in a bot game but are doing damage and yet haven't leveled up in that time, move them to fountain. Now the default AFK detector will threaten to kick them.

Yes, a system can't tell the difference between you goofing off with friends and trolling intentionally. Someone saying "I'm gonna feed" should raise a flag in the system like calling someone a racial slur should raise a flag in the system. I have no clue if it does or not, but reading chat logs looking for specific words isn't that hard for a program to do (even looking for stuff like "s.h.i.t" isn't hard to do) so I imagine they have something like that to help they sift through all the chat logs. Someone sitting in the same spot for 90% of a 20 minutes game should raise a flag since very rarely do you stand still in this game, let alone for that long.

Being reported for that behavior after the game should put emphasis on the flag saying "someone agrees with our system" basically. If that happens a few times, someone should at least take a look and see what's going on in these games because not only is the system picking up on it, but other players are agreeing with the system, or they at least agree that a behavior was not wanted (like they flame and feed so a teammate reports them for harrassment cause they remembered all the flaming and not the feeding, or they muted so never saw the flaming but reported for feeding).

If there is no report, at least the system still has a "Well, they threatened to feed/seemed AFK this game, let's see if this behavior continues" mark that can be used if they continue this behavior. If they threaten to feed or AFK in a later games, use this to show a pattern of threatening teammates at the very least. If they don't do it again, have this mark disappear after some time so one bad game a year doesn't punish players.

After so many automatic flags without reports, someone should look into what is happening to either update the code to better find issues since there are too many false positives, or actually do something vs the player who is breaking the rules and no one is reporting them.

None of these suggestions are insta ban anyone who types "I'm AFK" in chat. All this flag would do is highlight games that people maybe forgot to report, or didn't know they could report, or didn't want to be bothered to report so that a human can look at them later and make a decision.

Meh, if it really was as easy as you claim it is then they would have done it already. Riot isn't completely retarded, they are a little bit, but not completely.

Whoo, people do this all the time, and I think your suggestion sounds like a lot of fun. I'd love to see that afk player get pummeled and come back to the game a minute later and be like "WTF WHY AM I DEAD?!?!?!?" because I think they really would do that, then proceed to blame the team, instead of themselves. xD

DemainaNyx1 votes

Exactly. Like I said, wouldn't really do anything except punish these abusers, and it would give people playing the game something to enjoy. I could picture Baron tail pulling someone out of top river bush and then killing them or having elder dragon descend on the champion and do something.

I had a game where someone was doing the krugs trick and me and another player kept taking turns clearing the one krug (me clearing bot, them clearing top) so they couldn't do it, which kept annoying them. It was funny since after that game we added each other because of our "teamwork."
