Not reliably.
In a match with an equally skilled immbile mana-using caster (most mages) Versus one of the top midlane assassins right now, the assassin will win by default. If the mana-using caster is more skilled, the assassins are safe enough to just chill and safely farm, then pick up kills on botlane. I.E. being more skilled is just enough to make them go even with you, maybe.
Your opponent has to be considerably below your skill level just for them to slip up enough to get killed by you, considering both their power and their ridiculous mobility (and thus safety).

Its not so much power but more risk vs reward.
For instance: In mid lane Syndra vs Zed .
The Syndra uses her Q to farm and then tries to land her slow and stun onto the zed. If she missed she has used a lot of mana for no gain and now has to wait for all her cool downs before she can try again or react to an aggressive move by Zed therefore forcing her to back off and wait for mana again.
If Zed misses a poke combo with his W E and Q he may have low energy but that refills much faster than mana ever could and his cool downs are more forgiving. Also he's not as vulnerable as a Syndra or any other mage when their spells are down.

I don't get it. Energy champions (and resourceless champions) do it. Why the knee-jerk when mages spend 3,000+ gold to almost do it?

Energy champions and resourcless champions are lacking tradeoffs atm. I hate zed as much as the next person but the fact that mages could buy one item and basicaly remove the need for a mana bar doesnt seem right to me. Im on mages side, i main lux and velkoz, but i wouldnt want to go back to the athenes era. I enjoy looking and my mana and thinking "Well I have enough for 1 combo" instead of "fire at will".

What do you expect people to do? Just shut up and switch to using assassins? Mages are weak... in comparison to assassins. Who are being ignored while mages receive MORE nerfs. They literally hit Morello in the last patch because it's the only mana regen item that doesn't suck. And now Syndra gets murdered while assassins go ignored?
rG Thundrag1 votesSyndra's power was actually in her ability to cast skills while moving with no cast animations to lag her behind and as such she never stop to cast a spell as the animation plays while on the move the early game damage nerfs to her spheres and stun hitbox is still fairly justified though.
