A meta-breaking guide to: TrisTOPna. Yes, Tristana Top

(It works because you can shoehorn "op" in her name and it becomes top (also she might be OP in top lane))

Welcome to my Top lane Tristana guide! In this guide, we'll go over:

  • What makes Tristana work in top (1)
  • Why we would pick Tristana in the first place (2)
  • Runes/Masteries (3)
  • How to lane (4)
  • General build path (5)
  • What to do after lane phase (6)

(1) Tristana works in top lane primarily because of her passive, Draw a Bead, which increases her attack range against enemy champions. Being ranged, Tristana already has a leg-up on her competition by being able to harass them from safety without fear of being attacked back. While some opponents are able to use CC on Tristana to make the attempt, she quickly out-ranges them due to her passive and can harass with auto-attacks and her E (Explosive Charge) as much as she desires. When ganked, Tristana has a get-out-of-death-free card in both her W (Rocket Jump) and her R (Buster Shot), so the fact that she pushes so hard with her E isn't too much of an issue either. Being able to put out this much pressure and kill towers almost when she feels the need to (her E) allows Tristana to direct the flow of top lane almost entirely to her whims

(2) Tristana is a second ADC and can be built and played sort of like a ranged assassin. If your team already has a tank with decent engage, you can freely pick Tristana top without fear. Tristana brings a lot to your teams table. A secondary source of serious damage, a great split-pusher with ways to escape being caught out, a great tanker (W behind enemy, let them into your team mate a-la Lee Sin), and she's able to farm really well in a solo lane where she's not being actively pressured which leads to a huge gold income which is fantastic for a scaling ADC like Tristana.

(3) https://puu.sh/uYNL1/2811f5b1f3.png

CDR blues allow Tristana to jump more, push harder, and deal more damage. While you can swap these out for MR/level blues (how often do you fight a magic damage top lane?), I prefer to use these.

The Lifesteal adds up to 9.5% (with Dorans Blade), which means that Tristana is able to sustain herself as if she had a Vampiric Scepter from level 1, which is fantastic because if you ever make a mistake and get engaged upon, you can rather quickly regenerate your health and stay in lane to continue farming, which is imperative for Tristana. The longer you stay in lane, the worse-off your opponent will be.

Fervor is a no-brainer. With your superior range, you're able to constantly harass your opponent. Since Fervor takes so long to fall off, usually you deal more and more damage as you continue to harass them while not CSing. While harassing forces minions to attack you, you can quickly drop the aggro by standing near a bush and ducking inside after every attack. If you don't like that, I'd use Warlord's Bloodlust for further sustain. If you opt to take Bloodlust, however, I would recommend taking Natural Talent instead of Vampirism.

Due to just how much harassing Tristana does to those poor melees, I like to take Bandit to speed up my item gain. This is completely optional, however, and all choices can be taken here.

(4) Take W at level 1 so you don't push too hard. This is because Jungle players usually take two buffs or two buffs and a camp before ganking top lane around the 4 minute mark. The less you have your lane pushed out, the safer you'll be. I actually sometimes hit level 3 without putting any other skill points into Tristana until it's a good time to use E to harass. Every time your opponent attempts to CS, you should hit them two or three times before ducking out to safety. They have to stand pretty far back and sometimes this causes them to lose experience simply because if they stand near their caster minions, they take damage from your E's passive effect. If they try to fight back, just use your W to jump away to safety and continue the bombardment. When you've pushed up to their tower, they can't stay on their tower because of your E. If you use your E and place it on the tower, it immediately zones your opponent. When it gets near to exploding, they either have to run away or run toward you. If they stuck around, they get a huge sum of damage tacked on to their health bar. Remember that you can always continue to harass them with your Fervor-boosted auto-attacks while they're on their tower, as they really can't fight you back. If the champion isn't a tank, you can all-in them when they're around half health and win the fight (or 1/4 health if they're on their turret) and if they're a tank, you can kill them at 1/4th health without any major issues. Using E, auto, W, auto, auto, (ignite if you took it), R, auto. to finish them off. If a tank is on their tower, just be careful they don't have CC to hit you with after you jump on top of them.

Range is your friend, and it will decimate the lane for you if you master how to use it.

(5) I like to build the following:

item 1055 (or item 1083 if I'm against a Shen or similar farm lane), item 1038 , item 1001 , item 3031 , item 3006 item 3086 , item 3087 , item 3072 (or item 3153) , item 3036 , item 3139

Other items which are also good purchases include:

item 3124 , item 3094 , item 3085

You really don't need a whole lot of attack speed because Q (Rapid Fire) lasts throughout pretty much every team fight and it gives a lot of bonus attack speed, which makes a Crit+AD build really good on her.

(6) After lane phase, you open yourself up to a lot of options. You can gank using your W+R combo or you can continue to push with wards, your E which busts turrets wide open will destroy lanes relatively quickly combined with your Q and you can W and R away from any threats that might present themselves to you. You are a great split-pusher, but also a strong duelist and team fighting champion. You deal great sustained damage in fights and great burst damage too. You can assassinate targets out of position and break open enemies who try to reach you in 5v5s. With all your cries and resetting W, it'll be very difficult for them to catch you off-guard.

Once you're comfortable with Tristana, I expect great things from you! Some of Tristana's power can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJSysAhF5sQ

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me either here or in the stream later! I hope this quick guide helped shed some light on why I choose to play Tristana in the Top lane in Diamond, despite how often people get upset or criticize it! Usually they're shut up by the time you're 4-0 =)

"Tristopna" sounds like some really weird Russian soup.

I'd like to eat some tristopna, comrade.

No don't do that.

ChickenWrap1 votes

That's a very poor argument as to why not to do that. If it works well in Diamond, surely it works well elsewhere too?

IronwallJackson1 votes

Devil's advocate: because certain things are much weaker/stronger when every player knows how to capitalize on the moment to moment action of the game. For example, hard engage abilities are really good in high elo because your team knows how to follow up on, say, malph ult, but in bronze, your team is just as likely to ignore your all-in because they're skittish.

ChickenWrap2 votes

At the same time, Malphite and Amumu are really good in Bronze because CC can dictate games to a crazy degree down there. Diamond players all think that their opinion on when to engage is the right one and if you engage when someone else doesn't think it's a good time to do so, you can bet you just ulted into a free kill for the enemy team because rather than work together, they like to toss insults at each other and flaunt their egos.

I've used it in other elo levels and I understand that the skill of a player can very much dictate how a lane could go. If two players are matched up and are around the same skill level, however, Tristana should usually come out as the victor of the fight, I feel. Immediately writing off the guide like that seems silly just because he hasn't even attempted it for himself yet.

Maybe that's a bad example, but the point still stands, right?

ChickenWrap1 votes

I mean, it does, but it makes no sense to write something with this much thought and practice off as bad or useless simply because he doesn't like the thought of it being on his team. He has no idea how Trist Top functions. I do, and it functions well.

Why not build tanky if you go trist top lane?

ChickenWrap1 votes

Because then you won't deal any damage or make use of your best strengths in lane. Tristana has nothing going for her if she uses a tanky build. She has no real CC and doesn't have the strongest base damage ratios to warrant using such a build.

Given that other lanes have frontline, I think top lane marksmen are generally a strong pick. Her weak early game (in bot lane) is also mitigated with the range advantage. I don't think she'll fare well against other ranged opponents, or possibly divers, though.

ChickenWrap1 votes

That's exactly right! Her superior range negates her entire poor early-game!

However, she also beats both Gnar and Urgot in-lane. The only ranged champions I see her having problems with are ones with lots of burst damage in the early-game, such as Quinn.

50000000000000001 votes

The most commonly picked ranged top laners are Teemo, Jayce, Gnar, Kennen, then Quinn, in descending order (according to lolalytics.com). Others exist, but Quinn has a pick rate of 2.7%, so anything lower than that seems pretty pointless for the discussion of top lane matchup.

Of these, I think only Jayce and Quinn would give her any trouble, if at all. Have you played Jayce matchup? What do you think about it?

Also, I think Irelia might be troublesome. Is she a hard matchup, in your experience? What about Yasuo?

ChickenWrap2 votes

Teemo has the potential to be troublesome for sure with his Blinding Dart, but you should out-range him pretty quick. You just can't use W to engage, unfortunately.

You are correct, Jayce and Quinn are issues for Tristana, but at the same time if Jayce jumps on you and you jump away before he manages to cancel your jump with his E, he's toast. The problem is that usually his E stops your jump and then you die. Same thing with Quinn. Anyone who has point and click abilities that stop movement (and in turn, Trist's only escape), she's screwed because it has a slight charge time and you can still stop it if you cast the spell even as she enters the air.

The Jayce match-up sucks.

Irelia is difficult, yes. You just can't really kill her and if she engages on you, you have a hard time dealing. It all depends on the skill of the Irelia.

Yasuo has been relatively easy for me. His wind wall is up a lot less often than you'd think. He's squishy at the start so you deal a lot of damage and he really can't reach you, just farm behind his wall, so when his wall is gone, he not only can't reach you, but can't protect his poor flimsy body from explosive death.

Even if Quinn's E didn't stop your W, it would still follow you and slightly CC you once you landed, keeping her in range.

Her W movespeed and attack speed makes her really hard to duel, especially with the new buff. If you hate melee tanks then I suggest giving W max Quinn a go - that reliable 2 seconds of 80% attack speed and movespeed makes her kiting godly, and Cleaver Bork will ruin any tank any day (I'm serious, I think I've gone even with a Rammus with this build). More lifesteal for more sustain, crit for more shred, Lethality if you need to assassinate.

Honestly I think her W movespeed buff was kind of unnecessary. She was already hard enough to stick onto with her E, and now she's got 80% movespeed as well? That's one of the biggest movespeed buffs in the game, better than Shyvana's Burnout and Teemo's maxed Move Quick. I played her against a Lee top and was able to kite him super well - yep, I kited a Lee and I wasn't Gnar. It just makes it sooooo easy to take good trades and not take bad ones.

It's still 20-40% MS. Only the AS got buffed. It's just that 20-40% MS is insane.

Trist mid does well because of her insane early bomb damage, I've played it a few times and a lvl 2 cheese kill with a fully charged E and Ignite is not that rare. The 200+ damage bomb is incredibly strong, and because it's so backloaded, they don't know that they should back off.

Then again, I'm in Bronze.

I would start Q over W, though, because the attack speed lets you poke better and duel better, if that happens.

Bad idea. W is your escape, so if the jungler decides to early gank you, you can get out for free.

You're not gonna be ganked before you get level two unless it's an Ivern, or a cheesing Lee, Shaco, or J4.

Man, I remember the days when J4 took red first (this was when golems/big wraith start was normal) and cheesed mid lane the moment he finished it.

Generally I like to play super aggressive, and Q+E+W lets me do that really, really effectively.

Usually I play super aggressive and hope the jungler doesn't gank me level 2. Q+E is a ton of damage.

If it's an early ganking jungler I'd probably play more passive and not go so ham.

Some of them, yes. Melee carry champions can pose a serious problem for Tristana. If you ever find yourself facing one, don't take the lifesteal runes. Go for attack speed or AD Quints instead because you won't be able to sustain through their all-in if you get caught.

Hexs Fortune1 votes

I'm sure the bot lane adc and mid will appreciate not having a tank. They really need a top laner to do their job

ChickenWrap3 votes

Plenty of top laners who are not tanks are played in this game.

Tryndamere, Shaco, Jayce, Gangplank, Yasuo, Quinn, Teemo, Kennen, Irelia, Flora, Jax, Rengar, Azir awhile back, Cass, Camille, Heimer, Jarvan...

You still have two spots open for tanks or CC champions in the Support and the Jungle roles. Yes, it's rude to pick Trist when you're last pick Top and have no tanks, but it's rude of them to do the same thing in Jungle or Support. You play like a ranged Tryndamere or Gangplank. There's no real difference.

In fairness b/c of how trist's range scales as well as her W she's probably the most ideal marksman for a solo lane even over lucian imo.

Edit: the only one that might be better is quinn b/c of the roams and safety on E and W
